Google launched an update to its search ranking algorithm some time back in Feb 2011. This is what is called the Panda Update. Starting with United States, it was gradually rolled out to other English speaking markets in April.
Google has just announced that they have now rolled out this update globally to all international markets and languages except Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
Today we’re continuing that effort by rolling out our algorithmic search improvements in different languages. Our scientific evaluation data show that this change improves our search quality across the board and the response to Panda from users has been very positive.
The Panda update are basically changes to the search algorithm which promise to detect and remove scrapper sites from the SERPs. But many webmasters deel that there have been some errors in it causing great loss of traffic to even genuine sites.
Since then Google has been rolling out small updates to Panda, the latest one being v2.3 rolled out some 2-3 weeks back.
And who or what is the Google Panda Update named after?
While some have been calling it Farmer update because its apparent target is content farms, Amit Singhal of Google says:
Well, we named it internally after an engineer, and his name is Navneet Panda. So internally we called a big Panda. He was one of the key guys. He basically came up with the breakthrough a few months back that made it possible.
