How Teachers Can Use Social Media to interact with Students Effectively

These days not only students but also professors are attracted more and more to social media activities. This media provides us to engage in communications, express ourselves in the way we are. Then why don’t these communication channels be utilized as a discussion room or more broadly the classroom, making it a 24/7 running, instead of few hours in a week.

Professors with their subject page will be open to student’s queries, clarifying assignments all with the click of the button. Students in their own place can join the classroom more easily with no hesitation to post questions are some of advantages from these social media.

But there’s ongoing debates or can say discussions about the relation of students and teachers connecting online as friends. Below are some tips for teachers to project the best knowledge through the social media and also maintain the professional boundaries.

Get to know the students interests of social media

Survey among the students about which type of social media they prefer good for educational activities and start a discussion page accordingly, because some may find Facebook is not suitable for such discussion whereas others may find it a great idea. You may provide them with many alternatives from which you can engage classes, like creating a closed Facebook page or adding twitter backchannel or similar channels in Google+. And select the media from which both you and your students feel comfortable with. Else the purpose of this discussion will not be served.

Take advantage of groups and communications

Many social media provides grouping of users for better interaction among the users. The admin professor can use these groups as a classroom where group users – his students – post questions, and express their view point about the subject and also interact with other students.  But there should not be any interference student’s personal digital life with these discussions. Let your communications among the students highlight the purpose of your group but not the personal interest.

Establish clearly communicated boundaries

Once you are set with your education channel make some set of rules that doesn’t violate the actual goal of discussion. Let the students know about the rules they should adhere with, while in the discussion channel. Like the exchange of words is only restricted to group members, all communications are visible to the admin etc.

Also you should be very clear about what you are expressing in your social media page. Your posts should create more enthusiasm or more interest in the subject, your messages to the students should reflect the purpose of the discussion rather than being only the channel for gossiping.
