Google released its first Android version, The Cupcake in 2008. Since then, name and update of every version has been based on a dessert item and released in alphabetical order (Donut, Éclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, and Honeycomb). Google recently unveiled its new Nexus phone- Galaxy Nexus along with a preview of newly updated Android version 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, with some improvements and tweaks.
Basic improvements in Android OS – IceCream Sandwich:
- Resizable home screen widgets
- iOS-style to create a folder
- Customizable dock to accommodate more folders and quickly access apps and contacts
- Improved notifications system. Displays small contact pictures next to notifications pertaining to email, SMS messages, etc
- Improved Copy and paste with animated dragging and dropping
Major improvements in Android OS – IceCream Sandwich :
Android browser provides bookmark syncing with Chrome. This means it will automatically use your Google account to sync all Chrome bookmarks to your phone. Tab management is similar to the old browser however; the retouched browser allows you to open 16 tabs at a time. Besides, it has the option to save pages for offline reading.
Camera, photo editing tools and redesigned gallery app
The new camera app is designed to be fast and easy to use. It opens the camera quickly and takes pictures instantaneously, without any loading time between shots. A simple photo-editor allows you to remove red eye, crop and add Instagram like filters to your photos.
Like Windows Phone 7 Google’s very Android version gets a panorama mode. The Gallery app shows, shares photos and videos. It allows you to browse library by album, location, or by the people you tag in your photos.
Android Beam is a new feature that has been accommodated into Android OS. It uses NFC technology to enable you to quickly share web pages, apps, and YouTube videos with your friends by simply tapping phones together.
The new action bar along with its old comprising tabs (Compose, Search, Labels, and Refresh) incorporates a new tab- ‘Offline search’ by default to search for the emails that are 30 days old in an offline mode.
Improved spell-checking facility
To perform writing tasks more skillfully new set of default dictionaries have been integrated. This helps to improve word suggestion and error correction and handle instances such as double-typed characters, skipped letters, and omitted spaces effectively. The in-built spell-checker locates and underlines errors and suggests replacement words.
Revamped Apps button
The Recent Apps button allows its users to chute from one task to another instantly using the list in the System Bar. Also, the virtual buttons present across all the apps lets it user to navigate back, to Home or to Recent Apps.
The facial recognition system will allow the user to unlock their phone just by looking at their Smartphone.
Users can directly connect to nearby peer devices by accessing this newly included support with no Internet connection or tethering required.
All the above mentioned Google’s updated Android OS- IceCream Sandwich features were exhibited by Google to its interested audience. These features have been rethought and redesigned to make Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich simple, beautiful, more scrollable and stack able.
