Sony Ericsson announced W8 – The first Android Walkman Phone

Sony-Ericsson-W8

Few years ago when Sony Ericsson introduced the Walkman series phones, the phones with separate music players in it, specially designed for music lovers, took off the market and became an instant hit among users. Later on Nokia also introduced its Xpress Music phones and Apple also integrated the iPod in its iPhone which gave a strong competition to Walkman series phones.

There is no doubt that the Walkman was one of the biggest successor from Sony Ericsson. However during last few years Smartphone wars evolved and the demand for the Walkman series was decreased but now Sony Ericsson came up with a brand new Smart Walkman phone named as the Sony Ericsson W8 featuring Android on it.

Last day Sony Ericsson announced Sony Ericsson W8, which features Android 2.1 (Eclair) on it. Its the first phone from the Walkman family to run on Android. Looking at the phone its the remake of XPERIA X8 with some minor changes as of colors and the Walkman logo.

The phone will rather act less as smartphone after considering its hardware specifications,  the phone has really poor hardware specifications and we are not at all impressed with it. Though we think Sony wants to target the economic sector of the market.

W8 is built with 600MHz ARM Cortex Processor and bundled with 168MB of RAM, it comes with 3inch display supporting resolution of 320×480 pixels. Camera specs are not at all satisfactory, as it comes with 3.2MP camera capturing at 2048×1536 resolution and video camera supports SD video recording at 30fps.

Considering the operating system, it is powered by Android 2.1 (Eclair) really a lower version but considering the hardware it is the most suitable as this hardware is not able to handle Android’s 2.2 (Froyo) or 2.3 (Gingerbread).

The phone is just announced and will be available in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam first. According to us, looking at the hardware the phone will be costing no more than 200$ to 350$.
