Along with the iPhone 5, Apple also updated its iPod lineup at the ‘Media Event’ on 12th September. Well, this is an overstatement as September is generally the month of iPod refresh rather than iPhone.
Apple revamped its iPod Touch lineup with the next generation iPod Touch, Apple iPod Touch 5G. Here’s everything you need to know about it.
iPod Touch 5G: Everything you need to know
Most of the people are confused with the name, to clarify its Apple iPod Touch 5G (5th Generation), then ‘What was last year’s iPod Touch refresh called as?’. Last year Apple refreshed the iPod Touch 4G with a new color and oleophobic coating, so that didn’t make it a next generation device. That’s why last year’s iPod Touch (2011) is called as ‘Apple iPod Touch 4G (4th Generation) itself.
Along with iPhone 5, iPod Touch also gets a whooping upgrade in the screen size where the 3.5-inch screen is replaced with 4.0-inch screen. The stock resolution is 1136 x 640 pixels with aspect ratio of 16:9 and pixel density 326 ppi, making the screen specs exactly same as iPhone 5.
iPod Touch 5G is built for cosmetics! The traditional iPod Touch schematics which were followed from the first generation are ditched by Apple, Instead Apple came up with new, totally revamped schematics for this generation iPod Touch.
iPod Touch 5G is lot more slim than its predecessor. As iPod Touch 4G was 7.2mm THICK, this iPod Touch 5G is 6.1mm THIN. That’s almost 1mm cut, making iPod Touch the thinnest and lightest iPod Touch ever.
The back is made up of aluminium metal that is bonded with different colors. That’s why iPod Touch 5G comes in a variety of colors to choose from. The colors are not just painted on the metal surface, rather they are bonded with the metal bringing luster and metal shine.
It is available in 6 different colors which includes, Black & Slate, White & Silver, Pink, Blue, Yellow and (PRODUCT) RED.
A carry thread is introduced with iPod Touch 5G, Apple named it as loop. Loop is the best way to keep your device ready to use. The loop fits at the bottom of the device and is easy to fit and use. Apple says,
The iPod touch loop is a colorful new way to keep your iPod touch at the ready. That’s perfect for when you want to shoot from a hard-to-reach camera angle. Flip iPod touch up to type a quick iMessage. Or just sport it when you’re pocketless. The loop also keeps your iPod touch safe, so you don’t have to worry about a slip, fumble, drop, or overzealous robot dance.
A good camera was a needs of the iPod Touch. iPod Touch 4G had a pathetic camera (0.7MP) ever in the history. Myself being a user, I know how worse the camera actually is. In this fifth generation iPod Touch, Apple upgraded the camera with robust camera sensor from iPhone 4S or iPhone 5, but not exactly the same.
iPod Touch 5G features an iSight camera with 5MP camera sensor which snaps photos at 2592 x 1936 pixels. The camera sensor is made out of five-element lens with Backside illumination, Hybrid IR filter and ƒ/2.4 aperture. The front camera comes with 1.2MP sensor, that’s a considerably increase from 0.3MP.
The rear camera offers video recording at 1080p with video stabilization, where as the front camera shoots at 720p up to 30 frames per second.
It is reported that iPod Touch 5G is powered by Apple A5 CPU that is clocked at 1GHz and having dual-core architecture. Yes, the same CPU from iPhone 4S and a whooping upgrade from Apple A4. Apple A5 comes with a dual-core architecture and alongside has a quad-core GPU architecture. It’s one of the finest CPU from Apple and still among the powerful ones.
Memory and Storage
There is no word about the RAM capacity in iPod Touch 5G. The predecessor was built with 256 MB of RAM which was too less however. Since it is powered by Apple A5 CPU then it will be featuring 512 MB of RAM for sure.
iPod Touch 5G is available in only two storage options, 32GB and 64GB. If you want a low capacity model, you will have to go with the fourth-generation iPod Touch that is available in 16GB and 32GB models.
Apple discontinued its 30-pin dock connector and instead came up with a new 8-pin connector for this generation devices. Along with iPhone 5, iPod Touch 5G will also feature the new ‘Lightning’ connector.
Yes, iPod Touch 5G will be factory installed with iOS 6. Well, there’s also some good news too, this iPod Touch will have access to Siri as well. But since the only connectivity option is WiFi, you will have to sacrifice Siri use outdoors. Siri is available in following languages,
English (U.S., UK, Canada, Australia), Spanish (U.S., Mexico, Spain), French (France, Canada, Switzerland), German (Germany, Switzerland), Italian (Italy, Switzerland), Japanese, Korean, Mandarin (Mainland China, Taiwan), Cantonese (Hong Kong)
