Twitter Music unveiled for iPhone and the web, coming for Android: Stresses on engagement than selling music

iPhone and web users can like and tweet songs from iTunes, Spotify and Rdio now as Twitter has officially released its iPhone Music app which can be downloaded from the Apple’s online app store. Web users can also discover and like new music on the web by going to The service is currently available in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. It will come eventually to Android and other countries as well but no availability details are announced by Twitter.

San Francisco based Twitter allows people to wrap their thoughts in under 140 characters and publish it as a single tweet. People can post links, share pictures and videos. They can further refer other users using “@” symbol before their tweet handle or make their tweet reachable using “#” before the search name and packaging it into their tweets. Twitter is currently the hot cake for advertisers and it is predicted that its revenue will touch $543 million this year.

Twitter Music

The Twitter Music app is divided neatly into 4 areas: Popular, Emerging, Suggested and Now Playing. A user can listen to a song within the app, retweet songs or albums to your followers, purchase music and know more about the artists. Twitter allows the users to get 30-second samples of songs from iTunes, Spotify or Rdio music services. The default provider remains Apple’s iTunes shop.

According to the Blog post from Twitter, ” The songs on Twitter #music currently come from three sources: iTunes, Spotify or Rdio. By default, you will hear previews from iTunes when exploring music in the app. Subscribers of Rdio and Spotify can log in to their accounts to enjoy full tracks that are available in those respective catalogs.”

The music artists have been offered it in advance and the collective review is that Twitter Music stresses more on engagement and discovery of Music and artists than the selling of music. As per the industry-tracker eMarketer, nearly half the people of US listen to music streaming or Internet Radio online by services. Forrester analyst James McQuivey added, ” Twitter has not built the future of music; but that wasn’t the point. Instead, Twitter is building the future of Twitter’s customer relationship.”
