Windows 8.1 screenshots leaked: bringing new design, apps and features

Windows 8.1

A collection of screenshots was leaked online showcasing redesigns within key Windows 8.1 apps. The screenshots brings to light the changes in the Windows Store and Xbox Music. A lot of brand new apps such as calendar, alarm clock and voice recorders were also revealed.

The new apps Store interface gives recommendations to similar apps based on what you are currently browsing. For instance, if you are looking at the Amazon Kindle app, you will also get recommendations for the Kobo Reading app and Barnes and Noble Nook app. The revamped redesign brings new “Shelf” app that offers more upfront descriptions and other alternate recommendations.

The arrangement of the content isn’t optimized for keyboard and mouse users and this major redesign of Xbox Music app addresses that allowing for faster browsing. Users can navigate within their content in ‘Collection’ tab while ‘Radio’ tab is expectedly powered by Microsoft’s Smart DJ service, which has a good track record. ‘Explore’ tab allows users to discover artists and albums.

Alarm clock app

Many new visually aesthetic applications have been revealed including a new voice recorder, a new metro styled calculator with both standard and scientific versions and a redesigned alarm app. Microsoft is adding more control panel options to its metro settings interface as well. This is in line with keeping users on its metro styled interface and apps and prevent them from booting to desktops every now and then.

The screenshots were originally shared by Beta user Bavo Luysterborg on Twitter. The screenshots further support the expectations from Windows 8.1 Preview which will come with enhanced support for smaller tablets. It is expected to come with optimized and tweaked inbuilt features for better compatibility and screen size of 7 and 8 inch tablet.
