We have new information on an upcoming Android tablet by HP called the HP Slate 8 Pro. There are no details available related to the actual launch date, but we expect more information in the weeks ahead. The tablet is expected to succeed the cheap and unsuccessful HP Slate 7.

According to the listing in GFXBench benchmark, the tablet is codenamed Bodhi and will feature a 8” screen, which is obvious from its name. The display will have a resolution of 1600x1200p in 4:3 aspect ratio which will put its pixel density at 250 PPI. The tablet will run on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS and will be powered by a 1.8 GHz Nvidia Tegra 4 System-on-Chip (SoC).

The tablet also managed to clock 5489 frames (48.6 fps) on the Egypt 2.5 HD onscreen component which is a little shy of what Xperia Z Ultra with Snapdragon 800 could clock. This ensures that the tablet will be a top performing one. HP is also likely to add 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB internal storage, Micro SD card slot, 5000 mAh battery, 5 MP rear camera and 2 MP front camera. Looking at the whole specification sheet, we expect HP to price it competitively.

The HP Slate 8 Pro is likely to compete with upcoming LG’s 8.3 inch Android tablet, Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, new Nexus 7 2013 version and upcoming Apple iPad Mini. If HP prices it aggressively when compared to the $230 price of new Nexus 7, it might well give it a run for its money and could become a serious contender in the mid-range tablet market.

To remind you, the current HP Slate 7 tablet come with 7 inch 1024×600 pixel LCD display and runs on Android 4.1. It is powered by a 1.6 GHz dual core processor with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB internal storage. It features a 3 MP rear camera and a VGA front facing camera. It also has Micro SD card support, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB, 3.5 mm audio jack, stereo speakers and a battery with 5 hour video playback stamina. It is currently retailing for $170.
