Apple iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, which is worth buying?

Each generation of iPhone brought some big improvements and has grabbed the attention of the users worldwide. Currently, the iPhone 4 is ruling the Smartphone market which overtook its predecessor, iPhone 3GS. What things were improved in the iPhone 4, that it gained this huge amount of success worldwide?

Apple iPhone 3GS came as an update to the Apple iPhone 3G. The iPhone 3GS has got great looks. The traditional curve edges and the gloss effect of the phone make the phone attractive. The materials used for making the shell of the phone are really high quality as you expect from an iPhone. The Phone weighs just 135 grams.

Apple iPhone 3GS has got a capacitive 3.5 inch display of resolution 320 x 480. It’s covered with scratch resistant oleo phobic surface and has got features like Multi-touch input and Accelerometer. We got what we expected from the touch.

The Sound Quality of the iPhone 3GS is clear and precise. It doesn’t goes up to high level volumes but the mark it touches is good for people close to the phone. It has got a 3.5mm audio jack, so you can plug in your favorite headphones to enjoy the music. The bundled headphone has got awesome sound quality as you expect from the Apple products.

The phone has got a 3.15 Megapixel camera which was able to click some decent pictures. The video recording feature is also available. You can record VGA videos at 30 frames per second. The thing which disappointed us was the absence of a secondary camera. You can’t enjoy the video calling feature on 3G networks because of lack of secondary camera.

Now, let’s talk about the performance of the phone. The Apple iPhone 3GS has got an ARM Cortex A8 processor of 600 MHz and has got 256 MB of RAM which is good but not up to the mark when we talk about running all the latest apps on the Phone.

When the phone was launched in June 2009 then it used to have iOS 3. Currently it’s running on the latest iOS 4.3.3. Apple has promised that users will be able to enjoy their upcoming iOS 5 on this phone.

Storage has been a problem with the iPhone which doesn’t seems to be moving. You can only choose from 3 storage variants of Phone. The 3 storage variants are 8/16/32 GB.

The battery of the phone works pretty well. You can talk for about 12 hours in 2G mode and when you switch it too 3G it falls down to 5 hours. The standby time of the Phone is around 300 hours. With usual work going around on a 3G network, the battery lasted for 3 and half days.

The phone was priced really high for Rs 30,000 or so. But now the story’s different. For gaining some popularity among the mediocre Smartphone, Apple has reduced the price of the phone to Rs.19, 990 (for 8GB) in the Indian markets.

2) Apple iPhone 4

When compared to its predecessor, Apple iPhone 4 came with a bulk of improvements. With new innovations coming to the Smart phones, iPhone 4 was expected to have some great improvements and it really showed off. Lots of iPhone 4’s were sold after the launch and it still hasn’t stopped. Let’s take a look what iPhone 4 has got.

The build quality of the iPhone 4 is really good. The phone attracts the users with its stylish looks. All the needed buttons are present and are placed properly on the phone. When compared to iPhone 3GS the iPhone 4 is slimmer. The weight is almost the same. The shell quality remains the same, still the awesome.

Display of the Phone is a step ahead of iPhone 3GS. Apple iPhone 4 has got IPS capacitive display of 3.5 inches (Resolutions:  560×960). A new thing has came into play in the iPhone 4 i.e. Retina Display. Retina Display improves the quality of pictures drastically. The picture you get is really awesome as it increases the readability of documents as well as videos and other stuff’s look very clear.

The Sound Quality of the Phone is as good as iPhone 3GS but it has improved itself on the higher volumes. Now you can have more clear audio output on the in-built speakers. The bundled headphones are still ear-rocking and playing awesome.

Apple iPhone 4 has got a Camera of 5 Megapixels. The picture quality of the photos was really very good. The thing which impressed us was the HD video recording feature of the phone. This one can record 720p videos at 30 frames per second. Another thing which has come into play is the secondary camera, but it has got some limits. This works under the Wi-Fi. So you need to have a Wi-Fi Connection for making Video calls.

When it comes to performance iPhone 4 is standing in the line with some big Androids like LG G2x and Samsung Galaxy S II. It has got an ARM Cortex-A8 processor of 1 GHz and has got 512 MB of RAM which is really good and lets you to browse and play easily. Currently the Phone is running on iOS 4.3.3 but it is ready for the iOS 5 update as soon as it hits the market.

The battery life has improved a bit when compared to its predecessor. You can talk for about 14 hours in 2G mode and when you switch it too 3G it goes down to 7 hours. The standby time of the Phone is around 300 hours. With usual work going around on a 3G network, the battery lasted for 4 days.  You can play non-stop music for 40 hours.

The unlocked version of the Phone is available in US and UK for around 590 Euros. In the Indian Markets, you will get this phone under Aircel and Airtel around Rs. 35,000.

Conclusion:

There a lot of things improved in the iPhone 4 when it is compared to its predecessor but still a few things are similar. Both Phones will be getting the iOS 5 update. So if you just want to taste the upcoming iOS, the iPhone 3GS will be a cheaper option for you. The other thing which was similar on both the phones was the product used for building the shell.
