Journey Of Android OS From Donut to Ice Cream Sandwich

Android is an open-source stack of software for mobile and portable devices. It provides essential Operating System features and services, inter-process communication and message passing on the device. It has a wide number of updates ever since its original release. The new updates usually add new features and fix the inconvenience caused by previous versions.

Here are the series of Android Operating System as they got updates as it improved. This will be helpful for users and new comer who wish to learn about Android Operating System and its previous versions.

Android Version 1.6 donut:

This version is based on Linux Kernel 2.6.29. It includes communication options like Quick-search and Multilingual text-to-speech. This updates also improves camera/video experience and gallery view. Other features includes Battery usage indicator, turn by turn navigation support for Google maps.

Android Version 2.0 Éclair:

Android 2.0 Éclair is based on Android on Linux Kernel 2.6.29. It includes improved contact option, virtual keyboard, allows for multiple Google accounts on one phone, ability to search text message and also supports email exchange environments. Other key features are new user interface, new web browser, supports HTML5 videos, live wallpapers, W3C Geolocation. It is also included with an enhanced camera app with features like flash, color effects, digital zoom and scene mode.

Android Version 2.2 Froyo:

It is based on Linux Kernel 2.6.32. It includes improved keyboard language, Adobe flash support, Wi-Fi hotspot and new Bluetooth connectivity. It has an enhanced camera app with features- easy picture and video customization, LED flash support, gallery improvement. Also speeds up processor, web browser improvements, home screen shortcuts and memory managements.

Android Version 2.3 Gingerbread:

This version includes advanced User Interface, improved the soft keyboard, copy/paste functionality and communication support for built in VOIP and NFC. Web M video playback is a major update expected from this version. Other features include improved download and power management.

Android Version 3.0 Honeycomb:

This update is available only for tablets. It supports larger screen devices and introduces many new user interface features. Also improves multi tasking by providing supports to hardware acceleration and multi-core processors for graphics. Other features include Tabbed web browsing, gallery improvements, redesigned keyboard, improved contacts, emails and new video chat options.

Android Version 4 Ice cream Sandwich:

Technically Android Ice cream Sandwich will be named as Version 2.4. This new Operating System on the way to bring Honeycomb User Interface to the Smartphone platforms. This means, a brand new app launcher, holographic UI, tabbed browsing, multitasking panel, improved widget functionality will be available on Android Ice cream based devices.

The main highlight of this version of Android is the Face Tracking. This new feature recognize faces to assist the user in a video conference is to recognize the user’s face and followed when moving a user’s face. I am desperately waiting for the Ice cream installed devices rushing in the market. Android 4.0 is said to be working in old Android devices also.

Google had a strong presence in the Smartphone and Tablet OS market. It started to build the Android OS with the Linux kernel and successfully marketed it. Now, Android is competing with Apple’s iOS in tablet as well as Smartphone. Nokia’s Symbian OS went to darkness after the success of Android.
