NVIDIA for a long time has been the undisputed king of graphic cards. However there is a new graphic card soon to hit the block which might just knock off NVDIA off its throne. AMD, a company who has always been on the number 2 spot for desktop processors and graphics cards are leaving no stone unturned to claim the top spot in graphic cards segment. AMD Radeon HD 7970 promises to be the fastest graphics card available today in the markets. It was launched on 22nd December 2011.
The Radeon HD 7970 will be the new flagship graphics card for AMD. The Radeon HD 7970 sports a brand new architecture and is based on the Tahiti 28nm manufacturing process. The Tahiti manufacturing process is a brand new graphics card manufacturing process.
According to initial reports the Radeon HD 7970 will be almost 30% faster than the ongoing Radeon HD 6970 graphics card. The Radeon HD 7970 will also closely compete with its sister GPU the Radeon HD 6990 which sports a dual GPU in terms of performance.
The top end Radeon HD 7970 will sport a 3GB GDDR5 memory with 2048 stream processors making full use of its 384 bit bus width. The core clock speed will be around 925MHz. however AMD claims that it might tweak the clock speed to some number more than 1GHz. The graphics card will have 2xmDP, HDMI and DVI display outputs. The Radeon HD 7970 will be able to support 6 displays at a time. Sixth generation vapor chamber heat sink cooling along with an improved fan design will provide the necessary cooling for the graphics card. Aftermarket liquid cooling options will also be available to keep the graphics card cool when the going gets tough.
The Radeon HD 7970 will be available at a price tag of approximately US$ 549 (INR 29,000/-).
