An old Chinese saying “if you want to succeed, you have to make your own way, don’t follow anyone blindly”. True words! But it seems some Tablet manufacturers are in no mood to pay heed to this wisdom, or do not find it applicable in today’s world, when competing with rivals.  Apple when entered tablet market, changed the whole scenario and experienced success beyond measures. Other manufacturers, in quest to taste the same flavor tried to imitate Apple however, all their efforts turned futile. In this article let’s hunt those super flop tablets and the reasons for their collapse.

The Blackberry Playbook

BlackBerry Playbook

When one looks at the hardware configuration of the Blackberry Playbook he will definitely say WOW! The machine sports a 1GHz processor and a 1GB RAM, 5MP rear camera and 3Mp front, 16,32, and 64 GB storage capacity, 7inch WSVGA screen, and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and many more interesting features.

Once you get your hands-on this device, it takes no time to understand why it has been such a lackadaisical thing. The Blackberry Tablet OS that runs on the Playbook has very few apps and the main bottleneck is it has no support for email and calendaring. The device was such a big burden for the company that it was forced to slash the price number of times, but for no avail. The icing on the cake is the non-ergonomic shape of the Playbook.

Blackberry has promised that the problems will be resolved in some part of the year 2012, but the main question that circles still is will RIM be able to survive till then.

The HP TouchPad

HP TouchPad

The second splendor, oh sorry, disaster in the tablet world is Hewlett-Packard’s TouchPad. It too has a strong hardware and the OS is also home made. So, why it boomeranged the company, lets dig a little deeper to find out that big failure reason.

The software called the WebOS is the Operating System in the TouchPad. The OS promised to be more efficient and open than the iOS and more beautiful than the Android. Assuming this as all true HP bought it in 2010 for $1.2 Billion, so that,  it can after some modifications use it to its advantage. But the WebOS was not what it seemed from outward appearance. Several staff membersof the company admitted (off record) that the OS from the very beginning had little hopes to survive.  It neither had efficiency nor beauty, hence the debacle called the HP TouchPad.

Sony Tablet S

Sony Tablet S

This name here might surprise our readers or even shock them because the Sony Tablet S came to the market with lots of hope and anticipation. The hardware was such a wow but somehow it did not fulfill the expectation. First the configuration, the Tablet S has 1 GHZ Processor, 1GB RAM , 16/32GB storage, 5MP rear camera, front camera, 5000 mAh li-ion battery, and Android 3.1 Honeycomb.

Superb quality stuff one might think and it is, indeed! However, the resistive touch of the capacitive screen is enough to kill the mood of a person soon after it is held. After that, comes the cheap material of the body which adds fuel to the fire. The remaining reputation gets lost due to hanging problem of the machine. In all, a dumb piece of technology. Good Bye Sony and Good Bye Tablet S! Users are happy with their iPad 2.

Motorola Xoom Tablet

Motorola Xoom Tablet

When Xoom Tablet was launched it won several awards as it was seen as the potential iPad rival but after the fizz the cola was mere lemonade and nothing else. The Xoom Tablet lacks several things such as Adobe Flash, 4G, Expandable memory, and apps that are hard to count.

At this moment software crashes are not a novel thing to the Xoom and if gtalk is not behaving properly it is not your fault. One last thing the Xoom Tablet is very-very reflective as far as the screen is concerned in the outdoors. It behaves like a mirror, forget movies you cannot even read books outdoors.

Folks, Stay far from the Xoom, it will ruin your pocket and your tablet experience!

The Dell Streak 7

Dell Streak 7

Dell tried not to lag behind in the Tablet competition as it missed some share of the Smartphone market. It launched a tablet called the Dell Streak 7 with the hope to achieve the same level of success as it has in the computer and Laptop world. But alas! The tablet lacked class and a maturity and result is evident—a BIG flop.

The seven inch tablet, in spite of its smaller size has a poor resolution (480×800) that makes everything watching on it a  burdensome task.  What gets more frustrating is the viewing angle; you cannot move your head even a little bit. To put it simply it is the worst display on offer at this very moment. The most troubling aspect of  Streak 7 is that it cannot be charged via a USB.  You are required to connect it to a plug. The battery has no juice. No doubt it succumbed to the market competition.

HTC, the Taiwanese handset maker, might be bringing its first quad-core smartphone next month. The handset which had the code name Edge will be coming in front of the world as HTC Endeavor and this news has just been officially confirmed.

HTC Endeavor

Some of our concrete sources have  revealed that this handset will be rebranded as HTC Endeavor but it might also be true that the newer name could eventually turn out to be just a mere code name too. For such folks who are not familiar with the style of this Taiwanese conglomerate we would like to clarify that HTC  normally code names a product long after it is released in the market and at times after the release the code name persists internally. One more thing is notable that the HTC handsets hit different markets with different names but the code name for a particular handset never changes.

Again, coming back to the handset Edge or Endeavor, whatever it is but two things are pretty sure that this is going to0 be the first HTC handset to be launched with a quad core processor and it will be launched no later than the end of the next month.

Nvidia Tegra 3 Processor

The HTC Endeavor might be announced for the world at the Mobile World Congress later next month in Barcelona, Spain. But, this is not the official word from the company.

If we talk about the specs of the handset it will come packed with NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad core application processor the same kind of processors that the world has seen on some the tablet PCs which are powered by Android OS. And the processor will be well complimented by a 1GB RAM.

One more spec that the phone will supposedly sport is the next gen optically laminated 720p resolution screen which will be 4.7 inch and an HD one. It is an obvious fact that the handset will be running the Android Operating System, but will it be running the ICS 4.0, only time will tell.

The phone will be just 8mm thin so can be termed as slim phone too. One more rumored spec that has come out to light is that the handset will be sporting an 8 MP rear camera.

By all means this HTC Endeavor seems to be a mouthwatering prospect, so just wait for the right time folks and grab it when the time is ripe.

Paul Ottelini, the company’s CEO, said the relationship with Lenovo was “just the beginning”, as he also announced “Intel reference designs” for phones and tablets.One Intel spokesman described the Android products as “fully buzzword compliant”. The company demonstrated the power of its technology by taking 10 photos in a second! It also assured that existing software needn’t be rewritten for new devices by Intel. It hopes manufacturers will use them to build new devices of their own. The technology supposedly will be called Medfield.

On the other hand, Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha was quoted as saying that the multi-year deal would see “the best of Intel products’ in Motorola handsets and tablets. Lenovo’s first device has been christened K800.tgc-ces intel smartphone

PHP has the ability to upload files on to the server using $_FILES superglobal.  $_FILES works a little differently from $_POST and $_GET in that each file creates an array of related elements that provide information about the uploaded file.

The provided information includes:

  • name: The file name
  • type: The file type (e.g. image/jpeg)
  • tmp_name: The temporary location of the uploaded file
  • error: An error code corresponding to error type (0 if no errors found)
  • size: The file size in bytes (e.g. 15454)

$_FILES , basically is a multidimensional  array, by using the global PHP $_FILES array you can upload files from a client computer to the remote server. The first parameter is the form’s input name and the second index can be either “name”, “type”, “size”, “tmp_name” or “error”.

Here are the array field values to handle uploads. Remember the first value [“file”] is user desired it can be anything user wants to refer.

$_FILES["file"]["name"] – the name of the uploaded file

$_FILES["file"]["type"] – the type of the uploaded file

$_FILES["file"]["size"] – the size in bytes of the uploaded file

$_FILES["file"]["tmp_name"] – the name of the temporary copy of the file stored on the server

$_FILES["file"]["error"] – the error code resulting from the file upload

I am going to use all these above in the example where you could understand their use. Also note that, for security purpose, it is better to restrict user uploads. Allowing all type of uploads might turn out a security pitfall.

In the example iam going to use two scripts basically the first one as a HTML file that will be a form interface to select the desired photo to upload and the second as a PHP script that will do all the processing for a file upload. All the files uploaded will be saved permanently on to “upload‘  folder, so you need to create this folder before you execute the script.

HTML page to select the files to upload.

    echo "Type: " . $_FILES["file"]["type"] . "<br />";
    echo "Size: " . ($_FILES["file"]["size"] / 1024) . " Kb<br />";
    echo "Temp file: " . $_FILES["file"]["tmp_name"] . "<br />";

// Display the image

$file=$_FILES["file"]["name"];
echo '<img src="upload/'.$file.' " height = 150 width = 150/>';
echo"<br/>";

// check for already existing files

if (file_exists("upload/" . $_FILES["file"]["name"]))
      {
      echo $_FILES["file"]["name"] . " already exists. ";
      }
    else
      {
// saving the uploaded file permanently to the "upload" folder
      move_uploaded_file($_FILES["file"]["tmp_name"],
      "upload/" . $_FILES["file"]["name"]);
      echo "Stored in: " . "upload/" . $_FILES["file"]["name"];
      }
    }
  }
else

  {
  echo "file is incompatible, Plz try another image ";
  }
}

else
{
echo "Choose image first";
}
?>

</body>
</html>

Example:  Here I choose a JPEG image from my PC and then click the “upload” button.

As you can see image has been uploaded with all the details and a small preview as well.

The image has been successfully uploaded on to the folder “upload” which I have set in my PHP script.

Here is the complete review of all the work this PHP code can do:

  1. Keeping in mind all the needs, the PHP file upload script displays all the file(photo) details along with the picture that is being uploaded.
  2.  Allows you to upload images of gif, jpeg and jpg format. You can allow more number of files to be uploaded just by adding further file types in the $_FILES superglobal.
  3. If you try to upload nothing (just click the upload button without selecting any of the file) , you get a warning message.
  4. If you try to upload a text, pdf, .PNG file you get a error message saying “ File not compatible”;
  5. The PHP upload script also displays a small picture of the photo you just uploaded.
  6. Finally you are not allowed to upload same image twice

PHP session is a variable to be more specific that stores the information about user or settings he makes on a particular page. This information is carried forward to other pages he visits using. In HTML you cannot keep track of this. An example could be a shopping cart on a online shopping portal. You only keep things into it as long as user is logged on, later the information is deleted. Same thing happens in sessions in PHP as well. This PHP session tutorial will guide you through. A PHP session is started using method

session_start( );

Starting a session in PHP

<?php
session_start();
?>

Using the above syntax you can start sessions in PHP. Make sure that session variables store the information temporary; they are stored in PHP cookies.If you want the information to be stored permanently you can very well do that by storing them in MySQL tables. Always make sure you start the session before the HTML text or body.

Session ID

Session starts by assigning a unique session ID (UID) to every new user who visits or logs in to your website. You can display the session UID(Unique Identification) using the PHP session function

 session_id( )

Here is an example where you can see session ID being displayed and number of views of user as well. Note that the session ID doesn’t change unless you close the page and open it again. This is because a session is created for every user who logs in to the page. You can end the session any time using the PHP session function.

session_destroy( )

Storing information / Retrieving information in a session

Information about the session can be stored in the predefined PHP variable $_SESSION .

For example

                   <?php
session_start();
$_SESSION[“color”]=”black”;
echo $_SESSION[“color”];
?>

Destroying/deleting session information

Sessions in PHP are automatically destroyed once the user leaves the website or closes the browser. You can manually erase the session variable by using the command.

unset($_SESSION[“var”]);

To completely destroy the session use

session_destroy()

Example:

Here is an example code I have written to explain you the session’s in PHP. Here you can see session ID being displayed and number of views of user as well. Note that the session ID doesn’t change unless you close the page and open it again. This is because a session is created for every user who logs in to the page. Perhaps if u refresh the page using F5 key the number of views increases but session ID remains same. On other side if you close the browser and run the script again you will have different session ID.

<?php
session_start();
?>
<html>
<body>
<?php
if(isset($_SESSION['views']))
$_SESSION['views']=$_SESSION['views']+1;
else
$_SESSION['views']=1;
echo "Views=". $_SESSION['views'];
echo "<br>";
$id=session_id ();
echo "Session ID =".$id;
?>
</body>
</html>

The output is given as:

Sessions are one of the important concepts in PHP where it helps you to design login interfaces to the users. Perhaps it is very easy to handle session in PHP than any other programming language I went through.

There are some functions in PHP sessions that can help you to handle them better. Here they are :

session_cache_expire — Return current cache expire
session_cache_limiter — Get and/or set the current cache limiter
session_commit — Alias of session_write_close
session_decode — Decodes session data from a string
session_destroy — Destroys all data registered to a session
session_encode — Encodes the current session data as a string
session_get_cookie_params — Get the session cookie parameters
session_id — Get and/or set the current session id
session_is_registered — Find out whether a global variable is registered in a session
session_module_name — Get and/or set the current session module
session_name — Get and/or set the current session name
session_regenerate_id — Update the current session id with a newly generated one
session_register — Register one or more global variables with the current session
session_save_path — Get and/or set the current session save path
session_set_cookie_params — Set the session cookie parameters
session_set_save_handler — Sets user-level session storage functions
session_start — Initialize session data
session_unregister — Unregister a global variable from the current session
session_unset — Free all session variables
session_write_close — Write session data and end session
