Google recently released the preview builds for their upcoming Android version, Android P. As like every year, the owners of Android decided to roll out the developer preview builds for the users of selected Smartphone models including the company’s own Google Pixel series. This time with Android P, they have reinvented many previous features and added many other options. If you want to try out the latest Android on your smartphone, here is the quick guide on how to install Android P beta on Google Pixel.

As the operating System currently relies on the developer beta mode, there are several restrictions follows the installation. First of all, the smartphone must be Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, or Pixel 2 XL or any other eligible smartphones.

You can not install Android P beta on Google Pixel if your smartphone,  by software side, is modified by any means. So, if your Google Pixel series smartphone is rooted or running on a Custom ROM/Recovery, you cannot have access to Android P Beta registration. Also, you have to revert even if you ever unlocked the bootloader of your Pixel smartphone. It is basically due to security issue and restrictions set over the OS. Please note that the operating system has a lot of bugs and rough performance in some measure. However, you will get periodic updates and finally can have the final stable release once it starts rolling out.

How to install Android P Beta on Google Pixel

Well, if you are ready to take risks and still want to use the latest Operating System, here are the necessary installation steps. You can get the update to the Android P as an Over-the-Air (OTA) update. Since the software is in the development stage, you cannot have access to the direct installation. The page will show your smartphone if your Google Account is associated with any of the eligible smartphones. From there you can directly apply and confirm by entering the Google Account Password. After joining, you will receive the update notification for the forthcoming update.

The update is likely to hit the registered device within 24 hours of registration. If you want to manually check for the update on your Pixel/Pixel 2/XL smartphone, you can navigate to

  • Settings > About Phone > System Update > Tap on “Check for update”.

How to roll back to Oreo from Android P

As the Android P is in the development stage, you would find many bugs that affect your daily routine or basic features. If you want to rollback to the older Android Oreo, go to google.com/android/beta and “Opt-out” > “Leave Beta”. You will soon get an OTA update for older Android Oreo, which also may cause current data loss from your device.
