Apple has recently pushed a software update for all the iOS 5 compatible devices. This new iOS update version 5.1.1 is just a minor modification over iOS 5.1. Apple almost fixed all the security holes found in iOS 5.0.1 with the release of major update iOS 5.1, making its jailbreak impossible, but it looks like that iOS 5.1.1 has been jailbroken already.
@pod2g, a well-known hacker who jailbreaked iOS 5.0.1 is also working on iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak. He is already succeeded in jailbreaking devices which include,
- iPhone 4
- iPhone 4S
- iPad 1
- iPad 2 Wifi
- iPad 3 Wifi
While some old generation devices running non-A4 chip cannot be jailbroken on iOS 5.1.1. These include,
- iPhone 3GS
- iPod Touch 3G
- Apple TV 3
Rest of the devices are not yet tested, but they will be tested in next few weeks.
@pod2g is working with Dream Team to release a jailbreak tool like Absinthe or Corona which will jailbreak devices running on iOS 5.1.1.
Meanwhile there is a “Hack in the Box” conference on May 24th and 25th in Amsterdam and pod2g will be up there to talk about iPhone 4S jailbreak process.
Hack in the box website says,
Our main focus is on new and groundbreaking attack and defense methods that have not been seen or discussed in public before.
HITB can be the best ground to release iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak publicly, but still there is no official announcement. That’s why we cannot surely expect a jailbreak release at HITB conference.
Earlier we suggested not to update to iOS 5.1.1 due to no untethered jailbreak. But it is safe to update to iOS 5.1.1 as long as you can wait for the jailbreak. If you rely on SIM unlock, this is not the right time to update as you will lose your unlock.
iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G and Apple TV 3 users should never update to iOS 5.1.1 as there is no chance to get your devices jailbroken.
