One of the most anticipated gadget of the year 2012, the third generation iPad was finally announced by Apple last Wednesday. Worth a wait, the new iPad looked amazing. Highly expected to be named as iPad 3, Apple put down the expectations and named the third generation iPad as ‘The Next iPad’.
‘The Next iPad’ comes with five new upgraded features over the iPad 2. These features include,
New iPad Retina Display
After iPhone and iPod, iPad is the next device to get Retina display. Apple’ s display technology of bringing millions of pixel on a small screen and increasing the pixel density to make the display look realistic than ever.
‘The Next iPad’ features a stock resolution of 2048×1536 on the same 9.7 inch display. Holding the iPad at 15 inch distance makes it difficult to distinguish the pixels. This native resolution is even more than what we get in a HDTV.
Featuring about 3.1 million pixels ‘The Next iPad’ has a pixel density of 264 ppi which is enough to be called as a retina display. It also comes with 40% more color saturation than the earlier iPad.
Apple A5X Quadcore CPU
‘The Next iPad’ features a revamped and customized CPU named as ‘Apple A5X’ which is a successor to Apple’s A5 CPU of iPad 2 or iPhone 4S but made with complete new architecture.
The architects of this CPU has designed it with quad core graphics which in comparison to all new Nvidia Tegra 3 is four times more powerful.
iSight 5 MP Camera
Earlier in iPad 2, Apple introduced the same 0.7 MP camera of the iPod 4G which was extremely displeasing quality wise. The main reason for this was the pictures that former iPad snapped had resolution much less than the native resolution, so the camera was stretched upto 1024×768 forming grains on the screen.
This time Apple brought in Retina display for ‘The Next iPad’, having native resolution two times greater than the previous one. ‘The Next iPad’ features an iSight camera with 5MP sensor.
This iSight camera has backside illuminated sensor on the back, 5-element lens, IR filter, and ISP built into the A5X chip. Along with this, it includes auto focusing, auto exposure and face detection. Basically, this camera setup is the same which is found in iPhone 4S and like the iPhone 4S even it supports 1080p video recording.
We saw Siri, Apple’s personal voice assistant in the iPhone 4S. We all expected the same Siri to show up in ‘The Next iPad’ but this didn’t happen as the personal voice assistant was not included in this device.
Instead, Apple included a Voice dictation feature which recognizes our voice and types words, thereby replacing the keyboard work. The feature supports US English, British English, Australian, French, German and Japanese. It isn’t Siri but just a dictation feature added by Apple.
‘The Next iPad’ was surely getting 4G LTE capabilities and this was earlier confirmed by the WSJ too. Both AT&T and Verizon will be providing blazing fast 4G network for ‘The Next iPad’.
Recorded at 21Mbps HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA at 42Mbps, with LTE at whole new level of 73Mbps, this 4G LTE support is a cherry on the cake.
Along with AT&T and Verizon, Rogers, Bell and Telus will also be the LTE partners. From the keynote we could make out that there will be separate devices for AT&T and Verizon network.
This iPad does support the feature of personal hotspot and that too if the carrier supports it. Recent update states both Verizon and AT&T will not support the personal hotspot feature.
So these are the five new features which ‘The Next iPad’ will sport. Will these affect the battery life?
Obviously not, Apple has taken utmost care to maintain the battery life. Battery is designed to keep the iPad lighted up for 10 hours and 9 hours for4 G. And this is same like the iPad 2. Introduction of all these new features and balanced battery made the ‘The Next iPad’ little thick and heavy. That makes it 9.4mm thin and weighing 1.4lbs.
Yes, ‘The Next iPad’ still has a Home Button along with the same dock connector which was rumored to undergo change.
New iPad Price
‘The Next iPad’ costs $499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB and $699 for 64GB and WiFi only version.
The 4G LTE version costs, $629, $729 and $829 for 16GB, 32GB and 64GB respectively.
It will be available in both White as well as Black color. These prices are same as the iPad 2 and this is an another reason to buy it.
