Sony Ericsson came up with the very liked Xperia Arc back this year. Well, it seemed wrong time of release as the monster Samsung Galaxy SII was already floating over it. Sony Ericsson fan boys still went with it inspite of knowing about its old specifications. Correcting the mistake Sony Ericsson’s 2011 lineup comes with all new Xperia Arc S.
Both phones look identical, aren’t they? Exactly, Sony Ericsson has preserved Xperia Arc’s looks, dimensions as well as weight in the new Xperia Arc S. Looking at the phone it is difficult to differentiate between Xperia Arc and Xperia Arc S. Almost all the things in the phone are kept same except two major modifications which come in the form of for CPU and the operating system upgrade.
1GHz CPU of the predecessor is updated to 1.4GHz making Arc S the fastest Xperia Smartphone till date. Recently announced Xperia Neo V took the place of Xperia Arc’s 1GHz clock. Well, its a dual core era here launching a dual core phone was must rather than single core with better clocks. We still don’t know, may be a dual core is coming ahead of launch. But being single core it will surely get less preference over dual core phones; here in India as of now very few dual core phones are available but the number will gradually increase till the launch of Arc S.
Update: 08/01/2012. Primary camera has been kept the same 8 Megapixel but there is NO addition of secondary camera for video calling. Additionally it includes 3D sweep panorama feature like the Xperia Neo V.
It’s powered with Android 2.3.4 (Gingerbread) and is the second Xperia to get this update out of the box after Xperia Neo V. Other Xperia’s have to manually update to this firmware to get hands on the new features which even includes video calling over Gtalk and some bug fixes.
Rest all the phone remains the same, there is no difference whatsoever between Xperia Arc and Xperia Arc S. Even the battery is same Li-Po 1500 mAh but compare study says Xperia Arc S provides better battery backup than its predecessor.
Price and Availability [Updated]
Both the phones are now available in the market and you can buy them from local resellers or from Amazon.com. The Sony Xperia Arc has priced at $400.00 and Sony Xperia Arc S has been priced at $449.00 on Amazon.com.
Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S does get a new identity in the market but its actually the same Arc as before. This phone is modified only on CPU and Operating system level. Considering this, people who want performance boost should go with it. The only good in this is its factory upgraded to Android 2.3.4 and as I said before, rest the phone remains the same. Now it all depends on the price of the phone. If its priced very high people should consider other models from different manufacturers or else going with the old Xperia Arc and manually updating to Android 2.3.4 can also do the job.
