The banner notification system in iOS 5 has made the usability much easier while working between the apps. Most of the native iOS features are further enhanced by jailbreak tweaks which make them lot more convenient to use.

The banner notification system was treated with many such jailbreak tweaks, among them few like ‘Reveal’ were simply awesome. Another such jailbreak tweak named, ‘CoverMeNot’ doubles the status bar height to improve the banner notifications.

CoverMeNot doubles the height of your status bar, so when a notification appears on the screen the currently used app is pushed down. This prevents the notification banner from hiding the content of live app. Once the notification is timed-out, the app is pushed up and status bar re-sizes to normal.

The name itself says everything, ‘CoverMeNot’ as it doesn’t allow banner notification to cover your app. This tweak  is developed by cjori a developer behind ‘Dashboard X’. If you have already used Dashboard X, you can judge CoverMeNot efficiency just by the developer and know about its quality.

CoverMeNot is available in Cydia store under ModMyi repo for FREE. Here’s how to get it,

Step One: Run Cydia Store (make sure it is up to date)

Step Two: Navigate to Search tab.

Step Three: Search for ‘CoverMeNot’.

Step Four: Select the one available from ModMyi repo.

Step Five: Install it.

That’s it, just respring your springboard and CoverMeNot will be working whenever you get a new notification. There is no settings or configuration to be done before using it, it’s as simple as that.

You will surely like the way how it works and soon you will be used to it. I wish Apple adds this feature to the upcoming iOS 6 as it is still in beta stage and there is enough time for the final release. Fingers crossed!

Windows 8 will be among the biggest release of this year, the most awaited operating system features the all new Metro User Interface. From Windows Phone 7, the live tiles system was emerged and ported to XBOX 360 Dashboard too.

Windows 8 has already attracted many eyes because of its simple and attractive interface. Windows 8 phones are about to be launched, but they won’t end up with the same user interface as Windows 8 has got for desktops.

This moment if you own an iPhone or an iPod Touch, you can easily get the same Windows 8 Metro UI which is featured on  desktops and tablets.

There is a jailbreak theme which replaces your native iOS user interface with the Metro user interface of Windows 8. The theme is located under ‘Dreamb0ard’ themes and named as ‘Metroon’. It is only functional if you have Dreamb0ard installed on your device.

Metroon is easy to use and complete Windows 8 theme and comes with horizontal tiles view with rich icons and smooth animations. It provides support for most of the apps and has icons readily designed for them.

The user interface is configurable where you can change the location of icons in the same way like Windows 8. Switching between iOS UI and Metro UI is pretty simple and can be done using a single tap. There is standard UI app list from where you can select your favourite apps on the go. You can watch video here.

Metroon is available in Cydia store under ModMyi repo for $1.50. It requires Dreamb0ard installed on your device, which is also available in Cydia store.

Once you have installed both theme and Dreamb0ard, a Dreamb0ard icon will appear on the home screen. Launch it and select ‘Metroon’ theme from there. That’s it, your device is ready with Metro UI.

There are other Metro UI themes available for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad which even port the Windows Phone 7 UI to your device.

In the past, we covered several good and useful Jailbreak tweaks that helped you get an in depth control over your iOS devices by adding several useful features to them and here’s the latest, AppCent!

AppCent – A Jailbreak Tweak:

While downloading an app from the App Store you might have noticed a progress bar being displayed at the bottom of the app icon. What the progress bar does is indicate the progress of the download. A blue color fluid progresses fluently until it fills the application completely, but it does not display the numerical value. This is where this new jailbreak tweak named AppCent jumps into action.

The tweak developed by Rudolf Lichtner adds percentage value to your iOS app downloads. It replaces the standard ‘loading’ and ‘installing’ app procedure. All the user has to do is download the tweak and check if the Tweak is enabled or not. By default, AppCent is enabled and if you would like to disable the tweak you can do so by accessing the toggle that you will notice along with the creator’s Twitter handle: Rudolf Lichtner (@rud0lf77).

One good feature of AppCent is that there are no settings or options available to configure it. The tweak simply replaces the progress indicator by a percentage indicator, displaying percentage value in numbers.

In my opinion, users will not find the tweak of much value, especially in case of smaller sized apps but might consider it when wanting to know the download status of an app i.e., percent of app downloaded or left for the download to be completed.

AppCent is simple, effective in its function and really helpful while downloading larger apps (Apps taking long time to download on a lame network). It is available in Cydia for free. Note: You may run into some issues after installing the tweak on our jailbroken iPhone 4S, as it probably clashes with one of the installed jailbreak tweaks .Be careful!

Activator has an important role to play when it comes to functioning of many of the Cydia items. Using this gesture control tweak one can easily customize device controls. The latest to benefit from Activator is Rapid Links.

Rapid Links is a Cydia tweak that takes advantage from the gesture control. It allows users to create a list of their favorite URLs and access them from anywhere in iOS by simply carrying out a selected Activator gesture. This shortens the task of opening your Safari browser, tapping the address bar and then entering the URL of your favorite websites to open them. All you need to do is apply a simple gesture and use it to access them from a single place.

How to use RapidLinks?

  • Get the RapidLinks tweak. It is available in the ModiMyi repo of the Cydia store
  • Once you get it and install it on your iPhone or iPad, the tweak will add a configurable menu in the stock Settings app.
  • Then, all you need to do is setup the tweak. The setup too is pretty simple and takes no time. Just enter the web addresses of the websites in the URL fields. RapidLinks allows adding up to 5 URLs to its menu.
  • Please check if you have entered addresses of the websites in http:// format otherwise, links won’t work. So, ensure that you have entered the address of a website with http:// in the beginning.
  • When done, choose the desired Activation method from the first menu located in the option list. The time-saving Cydia tweak offers variety of activation methods so it is entirely up to you which one you need for the tweak.
  • Lastly, tap the ‘Apply’ button and wait for your idevice to respring.

Now, you are in a position to easily access the URL shortcut list from anywhere. RapidLinks is a time-saving and useful Cydia tweak, available as a free download. Have you used RapidLinks? Do leave us with your thoughts on it. If you would like to get Activator, refer to our post – How to Customize your iPhone with Gestures and Shortcuts. The application is very simple to get as you do not have to add any repos separately. It can be found in the ‘BigBoss Repo’, already present under Repo List by default.

Before the untethered jailbreak was released, all the A4 devices were able to run tethered jailbreak on iOS 5.1.1. The main drawback of the tethered jailbreak was you were unable to reboot your device.

iPhone 3GS users having old bootrom do not continue with this tutorial as your device will be running untethered jailbreak itself.

An iPhone concept floated recently which showed all new unlocking concept for iPhone. It was ‘Fold to unlock’ . The concept looked much better and cool than the existing ‘Slide to unlock’. But concepts rarely turn into reality and so there were doubts raised against it.

Anton Kudin made the Fold to unlock concept. This amazing concept immediately caught the attention of the jailbreak community. Just after few days the concept was shown, a German jailbreak developer Jonas Gessner worked on the idea and developed a new tweak which brought this concept into reality.

Unfold for iPhone

Named as ‘Unfold’ it replicates the Fold to unlock concept as it is. It’s very simple and super effective which give your iPhone locks screen much better feel.

Unfold for iPhone replaces the ‘Slide to unlock’ bar and knob with ‘Fold to unlock’ text. Just like we did for ‘Slide to unlock’ swipe your finger across the ‘Fold to unlock’ text and your lock screen is folded like an accordion. The fold animation is super smooth and doesn’t add any lags while performing.

All the elements on the lock screen including, clock, wallpaper, date, carrier name, etc. gets folded without getting distorted. Unfold is also compatible with most of the lock screen tweaks like IntelliscreenX, LockInfo, Camera Grabber and also iPhone native unlock pass code system.

Unfold is available in Cydia store under BigBoss repo. The best part of it is, it is FREE!. Unfold works perfectly with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. It also supports iPod Touch running iOS 5, but it doesn’t support iPad at the moment.

Getting Unfold for iPhone is easy, just go to Cydia and search for ‘Unfold’, install it and respring your device. You will find the ‘Slide to Unlock’ portion replaced with ‘Fold to unlock’. That’s it. Enjoy your new lock screen animation.

The new pop out notification system in iOS 5 is truly one of the must have feature. This new notification system makes things easy as it doesn’t disturb your work. Though it is good, it still has one drawback, it shows shortened notifications.

So in notification bar you get to see only part of your incoming message or notification. To view it full you have to go to the particular app leaving all that you were doing at that moment.

Apple didn’t provide any such update, so to fix this developers named Joshua Tucker and Conrad Kramer have developed a jailbreak tweak named ‘Reveal’.

Reveal allows you to view the full body notifications on iPhone from the Lock screen or from the banner notifications. This makes reading easy and saves much of the time as there is no need to open the particular app.

Whenever you get a banner notification, Reveal makes it possible to scroll horizontally over the banner like a marquee to read the whole body of notification.

It works the similar with bubble notifications too, allowing you to scroll vertically through the bubble notifications on the lock screen. If not, you can also double tap the lock screen icon bubble to expand the message.

Take a look at the video preview of Reveal.

Looks cool isn’t it?

Reveal is available in Cydia store under BigBoss repo for $1.99. Though it is a paid tweak, it is a must buy. To get it, just head over to Cydia, search for Reveal, make your purchase and install it.

To install Reveal your device should be jailbreaked and running on iOS 5. It doesn’t work with previous versions of iOS as the new notification system is only introduced in iOS 5. It is supported by all the iDevices including iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

No matter how good Apple’s iOS is it will always have some part that will not satisfy its users completely.  Thankfully, we have Cydia. You may all know Cydia is a software application for iOS that enables a user find and install many software packages such as apps, interface customizations and more but you need to have a Jailbroken device for this. So, what you don’t get in the App Store at times, you may find it in Cydia.  That said, A few days back, new and free jailbreak tweak landed in the Cydia store, dubbed LaunchSpeak.

What is LaunchSpeak?

LaunchSpeak as the name implies is a Cydia tweak by iOS developer fr0st.  The tweak allows users to specify a text string which is then read out by the device whenever an app is launched from the home screen. In short, you get a sort of ‘audio feedback’ after pressing the finger on the icon of any application.

The application requires you to reboot your device every time you change the text from the text input box. This is one shortfall of the application.

Apart from changing the text you can toggle the tweak ‘ON’ and ‘OFF’ as per your convenience. So, if you are in a location where silence is expected and don’t want your phone to be speaking continuously while you use it you can turn off the tweak.

How to use LaunchSpeak?

Download LaunchSpeak, free of charge from the ModMyi repository and install it.

Once the installation is complete, you will find the tweak in the Settings menu with 2 configurable options,

  1. A switch to toggle LaunchSpeak ‘ON’ or ‘OFF’
  2. A Text field that allows the string of text to be entered

In the text input box/text field include “”and enter the name of application. Once done, LaunchSpeak will announce the name of the invoked app.

Two things that LaunchSpeak is missing currently is the ability to respring directly from the Settings application and a preferences pane icon. However, the developer promises to include both these features.

Although the tweak may not appear useful to normal users, it could help visually impaired users who may just want to confirm that they have launched the required application. Launchspeak is compatible with all iOS version.
