Overview

3Beans aims to reproduce the 3DS system environment rather than offer a polished, dependable game library. It can reach the Home Menu and launch some games, but the maker describes the project as young and still affected by many issues. That makes it more suitable for experimentation than for anyone counting on a particular game to work.

Setup requires boot9.bin, boot11.bin, and nand.bin dumped from a physical 3DS with homebrew access. Playing a cartridge game also requires an encrypted cartridge dump. A cartridge is not needed to boot, and users can select one from the File menu. An optional sd.img can be any FAT-formatted image file and serves as the emulated SD card.

Key features

Rendering and CPU emulation

Both software and hardware GPU rendering are supported, offering two approaches to graphics. The CPUs remain fully interpreted, and the emulator is still early in development. Those rendering options do not make it a mature or broadly dependable choice.

Controls and project feedback

Users can view and change controls in Settings, a useful option when adjusting input to suit their setup. The maker welcomes testing, issue reports, and feedback, with a Discord server for discussion. The project is personal, though, and pull requests will not be reviewed or accepted; users interested in contributing code should account for that limit.

Pricing

3Beans is free and open source under the GPL-3.0 license. The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free. There are no paid tiers to weigh against it, but the price does not remove the practical cost of entry: users need homebrew access to a physical 3DS and must provide the required system dumps themselves. Cartridge play additionally depends on encrypted game dumps.

Platforms

3Beans supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, and supports system software. The maker provides builds for all three desktop platforms; the latest builds are automatically supplied through GitHub Actions on the releases page. Although the platform list also names Android and iOS, no corresponding downloads are described.

Who it's for

Choose 3Beans if you want to explore low-level 3DS system emulation, are comfortable preparing console dumps, and can accept incomplete game support and ongoing issues. Look elsewhere if you need a mature emulator for regular play, do not have access to a homebrew-enabled 3DS, or want an option that does not depend on your own system files.

Pros and cons

Pros

Free and open source: There is no purchase price, and the project uses the GPL-3.0 license.
System-level progress: It can boot the Home Menu and launch some games, giving curious users a basis for exploring 3DS emulation.
Rendering choice: Software and hardware GPU rendering provide two graphics paths.
Configurable controls: Input can be viewed and changed in Settings.

Cons

Early and issue-prone: The maker characterizes the project as young, and it is not a safe pick for reliable game compatibility.
Console dumps are required: Booting depends on three files from a physical 3DS with homebrew access, while cartridge play needs encrypted dumps.
Interpreted CPUs: The CPUs are not yet dynamically translated, limiting what the available rendering options alone can deliver.
Code contributions are closed to pull requests: The maker does not review or accept them, despite inviting testing and feedback.

Alternatives

For another 3DS-focused option, browse the Nintendo 3DS Emulators list. For other Nintendo handheld choices, see Nintendo DS Emulators.

Pick DeSmuME if Nintendo DS and DS Lite emulation is what you need: it is free and open source on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X, but does not support DSi. SkyEmu is a free, open-source option across desktop, mobile, and web platforms; its DS emulation is beta quality. melonDS is another free, open-source Nintendo DS emulator for Linux, macOS, and Windows, with some emulation requiring console BIOS and firmware dumps.

Pilas-melonDS is a free web option. Delta is a free iOS and macOS app with in-app purchases. GB Enhanced+ is a free, open-source emulator for Linux, macOS, and Windows. iDroidDS is a free, ad-free, open-source Android option. nds4droid is a free, ad-free Nintendo DS emulator for Android.

Verdict

3Beans is worth choosing for technically confident users who want to follow an emerging 3DS emulator and can provide their own console files. Its ability to boot the Home Menu and some games makes it an interesting project to explore, but the early state, interpreted CPUs, and mandatory dumps make it a poor fit for dependable play. If compatibility and convenience matter more than low-level experimentation, choose another emulator.
