Overview

3CX is a business phone system for organizations that need call handling across desktop and mobile devices. It suits teams comparing a capped free tier with a paid plan that supports more extensions and concurrent calls. Its strongest case is the combination of an auto attendant, advanced routing and voicemail transcription; the right tier depends on how many people need access and how many calls must run at once.

It is listed in Business Phone Systems and Unified Communications Software.

Key features

Auto attendant: Automated call handling can help organizations direct incoming callers without relying on someone to answer every call.
Advanced call routing: Routing is a notable strength for teams with more involved call flows. The Pro tier also includes advanced routing and contact-center capabilities, making it the clearer fit when those functions are a priority.
Voicemail transcription: Transcribed messages can be more practical to review than listening to each voicemail, particularly for people moving between calls or devices.
Desktop and mobile apps: Apps for both device types give users more than one way to access the phone system.

Capacity is a key distinction between the free and Basic plans: the free tier supports 10 users and four simultaneous calls, while Basic lists 40 extensions and eight simultaneous calls. The product also lists 40 included users; that broad figure should not be mistaken for the free plan's smaller user cap.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
4SC Basic Free	Free	10 users and four simultaneous calls. The license must be manually renewed each year.
Basic	300.00 USD per year	Billed annually; 40 extensions and eight simultaneous calls.
Pro	Custom pricing	Advanced call routing and contact-center capabilities.
AI	Custom pricing	AI features, call-center capabilities and transcription capabilities.

The free plan is the sensible starting point for a small group that can work within 10 users and four concurrent calls, but its yearly manual renewal is an extra task to manage. Basic costs 300.00 USD per year and doubles the simultaneous-call allowance while raising capacity to 40 extensions, so it is the more suitable choice for a larger team or one likely to run more calls in parallel. Pro and AI are options for organizations seeking their additional capabilities, but custom pricing means their costs cannot be compared directly with Basic from the listed prices.

Platforms

3CX is available on web, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android and macOS. That breadth makes it a plausible fit for teams using a mix of desktop operating systems and mobile devices.

Who it's for

3CX is a good match for organizations that need a business phone system with call automation, routing and voicemail transcription, and want a free tier before moving to a paid capacity level. Smaller teams with modest call concurrency can start on the free plan; teams needing up to 40 extensions and eight simultaneous calls have a clearly priced step up in Basic. Organizations requiring contact-center functions or the AI tier's capabilities should weigh those needs against custom pricing.

Pros and cons

Pro: The free tier includes 10 users and four simultaneous calls, providing meaningful capacity for a smaller team without a subscription price.
Pro: Basic's 40 extensions and eight simultaneous calls offer a defined expansion path at 300.00 USD per year.
Pro: Auto attendant, advanced routing, transcription and apps across six desktop and mobile platforms cover important parts of business calling.
Con: The free license must be manually renewed every year, so it requires an annual administrative reminder.
Con: Basic's 40-extension limit is lower than the free plan's broad product-level figure of 40 included users only in the sense that extensions and users are different measures; buyers should confirm which capacity matches their needs.
Con: Pro and AI use custom pricing, making it harder to budget for their contact-center and AI-related capabilities in advance.

Alternatives

Microsoft Teams is worth considering when collaboration meetings and cloud storage matter alongside communications: its free plan supports 100 participants in group meetings of up to 60 minutes and includes 5 GB of cloud storage.

VitalPBX may suit teams seeking a free PBX option with a 12-extension community plan and support for two VitXi WebRTC clients.

Talkroute is another business phone alternative.

Vodia PBX is another PBX alternative.

Freshcaller may be a better fit for a team comparing per-agent call-center pricing: its free plan has unlimited agents with pay-per-minute charges, while Growth is 15.00 USD per month billed annually and includes 2,000 incoming minutes.

CallHippo is another business calling option.

PortSIP PBX may appeal to a small deployment that can stay within its free edition's two simultaneous calls and three extensions.

Zoho Voice is another freemium voice platform to compare.

Verdict

Choose 3CX if your organization wants business calling with an auto attendant, advanced routing and voicemail transcription, and its free capacity or Basic's 40 extensions and eight simultaneous calls fits your workload. Its broad platform support and clear Basic price make it a practical choice for teams moving beyond a small free setup. Look elsewhere if you need a price you can assess upfront for contact-center or AI capabilities, or if the free tier's call and user caps are too restrictive.
