Overview

H&R Block Online is a tax-preparation service for filing through a browser or mobile device. It suits people with straightforward returns who qualify for its free tier, as well as filers who need support for deductions, investments, rental income, or self-employment.

Its strongest case is the range of filing paths and expert help in paid plans; its main drawback is that state filing costs extra and free eligibility excludes many common, more involved situations.

Key features

Filing scope and imports

Free Online covers Form 1040 and a limited set of schedules, with interest and dividend income capped at $1,500. It excludes itemized deductions, self-employment, rental income, capital gains, business income, and foreign income. Approximately 52% of filers qualify, so this is a useful no-cost route only when the return stays within those boundaries.

Deluxe adds itemized deductions, homeowner-related filing, childcare expenses, and Health Savings Accounts. Premium is the relevant tier for rental income, stock and bond investments, and cryptocurrency sales. It can import investment information from participating institutions and transaction data through third-party crypto tax software. Self-Employed covers business income, Schedule C, deductions, and small-business expenses. Previous-year returns can be imported from TurboTax or another tax-preparation service.

Help and safeguards

Unlimited expert help is included with Deluxe, Premium, and Self-Employed. Paid DIY products also include 24/7 generative AI chat and live tax-pro help, and Tax Pro Review can be added to any DIY option during filing. That gives paid filers a route to assistance without requiring them to choose a separate plan upfront.

H&R Block says it reimburses penalties and interest resulting from qualifying errors. A qualifying larger refund or smaller tax liability can trigger a preparation-fee refund and amended return. These protections are useful, but apply only under their qualifying conditions.

Online and mobile filing

The online service stores a return online, while downloadable software stores it on the computer for offline work. The Tax Prep app supports filing on any device and document uploads. That is convenient for mobile filing, while downloadable software is the better fit for someone who wants offline work.

Pricing

The freemium lineup ranges from a no-cost simple-return option to plans for deductions, investments, and business income. State filing is an additional charge per state on every plan, so the Free Online price does not mean a free state return.

Plan	Price	Best fit	What it covers
Free Online	0.00 USD per free; billed per state filed	Simple tax situations	Form 1040 and limited listed schedules
Deluxe	Custom pricing; billed per state filed	Parents, homeowners, caretakers, and contract workers	Itemized deductions, homeowners, childcare expenses, and Health Savings Accounts
Premium	Custom pricing; billed per state filed	Investors and filers with rental income or stock-market activity	Rental income and deductions, stock and bond investments, cryptocurrency sales, and investment reporting
Self-Employed	Custom pricing; billed per state filed	Business income and small-business expenses	Business income reporting and deductions, Schedule C support, and income and expense reporting

The cheaper plan gives up coverage for the situations that often make a return more involved: itemized deductions, investments, rental property, and business income. The company says it provides the price upfront and updates customers if it changes, but state charges remain separate.

Platforms

H&R Block Online works on the web, iOS, and Android. The Tax Prep app adds document uploads and filing across devices; choose downloadable software instead if offline work matters more than online storage.

Who it's for

Free Online is worth considering when the return is a simple Form 1040, interest and dividends stay within the $1,500 limit, and none of the excluded income or deduction types apply. Deluxe fits filers who need deductions or household-related tax support; Premium is aimed at investors and landlords; Self-Employed is the appropriate path for Schedule C and small-business expenses. Filers who need state returns should account for the per-state charge before choosing.

Pros and cons

Pros: Four plans map to simple, deduction-heavy, investment and rental, and self-employment returns, making it easier to choose around the kind of income involved.
Pros: Paid plans include expert help, while paid DIY products add AI chat and live tax-pro help; Tax Pro Review can also be added during filing.
Pros: Prior-year return imports and Premium investment and crypto imports can reduce manual data entry for returning filers and investors.
Cons: Free Online excludes several common complex situations, including itemized deductions, capital gains, rental income, and self-employment.
Cons: State filing is charged per state, including alongside the free plan.
Cons: Deluxe, Premium, and Self-Employed have custom pricing, so their cost cannot be compared from the plan price alone.

Alternatives

Choose TaxAct if an eligible standard return can use its free federal filing and a separate state charge is acceptable; its listed Deluxe plan is 59.99 USD. TurboTax is another option for a simple Form 1040: its Free Edition is 0.00 USD for federal and state filing for eligible simple returns. If a mobile-only filing service is preferable, CloudTax offers a free plan for up to 2 returns with basic tax-return support on Android and iOS. WISO Steuer offers a free test version with all functions available to try and payment requested only when submitting the return.

TaxDown, ClearTax, Keeper, and 1040.com are other tax-preparation options. Browse Personal Tax Software, Small Business Tax Software, Tax Preparation Software, or AI Tax Software to compare category options.

Verdict

H&R Block Online is a strong fit for filers who want a clear route from a simple return to investment, rental, or business-income support, especially if paid-plan expert help matters. Choose it only after checking free-tier exclusions and adding the per-state filing charge; filers seeking predictable all-in pricing should look elsewhere.
