Overview

ABBYY Lingvo is a digital dictionary suite for people who need to move between languages while studying or working. It is particularly well suited to language learners and readers of specialist material who want offline lookup alongside vocabulary practice. Choose it for its extensive paid Windows dictionaries; if you only need occasional definitions, the free mobile selection may be enough.

Key features

Lingvo’s Windows multilingual editions cover 10 languages, and the Professional edition contains more than 80 general, explanatory and specialist dictionaries. The specialist subjects span law, economics, finance, engineering, oil and gas, chemistry, medicine and biology. This is a meaningful advantage for technical or professional reading, where a broad general dictionary may not provide the vocabulary needed; the larger collection is harder to justify for simple everyday lookups.

Windows can translate words beneath the cursor in pictures, web pages and subtitles, reducing the effort of looking up unfamiliar text in context. Lingvo Tutor adds exercises on word meanings and spelling, making the suite useful for building vocabulary as well as reference. The Windows x6 trial provides full program access for 15 days from first launch.

On macOS, translation is available through Services or keyboard shortcuts, with cursor lookup in Safari. The iOS app can translate photographed text and sync user-created vocabulary cards across devices. Android adds photo and video translation and grammatical word forms. Both mobile apps say all functions work offline, a practical benefit for study or travel without a reliable connection. Their free dictionaries are a much smaller offering than the Windows collections.

Pricing

Lingvo uses a freemium model. The iOS and Android apps are each free and include five basic dictionaries covering six languages; additional dictionaries can be purchased. These are sensible low-commitment options for mobile lookup, but they do not include the full Windows multilingual collections.

Windows licenses are listed as one-time prices and cover three years. Lingvo x6 Английская Профессиональная Per Seat costs 4018.00 RUB per once, for 3–20 licenses, and covers English and Russian. It is the focused option for organizations or teams that need those two languages, but the seat range makes it unsuitable as a single-user purchase.

Lingvo x6 Многоязычная Домашняя costs 8349.00 RUB per once for a three-year home license and covers 10 languages. It suits individual home use that needs broader language coverage without the Professional dictionary set. Lingvo x6 Многоязычная Профессиональная costs 13965.00 RUB per once for a three-year license, covers 10 languages and includes more than 80 dictionaries. It is the strongest fit for users who will benefit from specialist reference material; the higher price is difficult to warrant for basic lookup. Prices are in RUB, and the listed term for these licenses is three years.

Platforms

Lingvo is available on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. Windows requirements include Windows 11, 10, 8.1 and 8, as well as Windows Server 2019, 2016 and 2012 R2. That range supports older Windows environments, while macOS and mobile users get platform-specific lookup features rather than the full Windows dictionary lineup. Technical support is available to registered users of licensed versions during Moscow business hours, Monday through Friday, 09:00–18:00.

Who it's for

Lingvo is a strong candidate for learners who want offline dictionaries and exercises, and for professionals whose reading calls for technical vocabulary. Windows users have the clearest reason to pay, particularly if they need the Professional collection or cursor translation across varied content. Mobile users can start with the free dictionaries and add more if needed. Those who mainly want occasional general definitions may find the free mobile offering sufficient.

Pros and cons

Pros: The Windows Professional edition combines more than 80 dictionaries across general and specialist subjects, useful for technical and professional reading.
Pros: Cursor translation on Windows and Safari, plus photo and video translation on mobile, supports lookup in context.
Pros: Mobile apps support offline use, and iOS can sync user-created vocabulary cards across devices.
Cons: The free mobile offer is limited to five basic dictionaries, with additional dictionaries requiring purchases.
Cons: Windows licenses are for three years rather than perpetual use, and the English Professional per-seat option requires 3–20 licenses.
Cons: The largest dictionary collection is tied to the higher-priced Professional Windows edition, which may be excessive for occasional lookup.

Alternatives

Online Dictionaries are worth considering if you want to compare other web-based dictionary options.

Choose Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries if free online access to the full A–Z Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary and Oxford Advanced American Dictionary, plus a Text Checker and word lists, better suits your needs.

dict.cc is an alternative for free dictionary use in a web browser, including private and business use.

WordWeb may suit Windows users who want a free edition with definitions, synonyms, examples, basic AI suggestions and translations, subject to its licensing terms.

Consider Merriam-Webster Dictionary for a free app with ads, an offline dictionary and thesaurus, and a premium version that removes ads.

PONS Dictionary offers a free, ad-supported online dictionary, while its Translate app is free to download with in-app purchases for dictionaries and an ad-.

Cambridge Dictionary is a free online option with +Plus word lists and quizzes.

GoldenDict may appeal if you prefer free, GPLv3+ dictionary software and are comfortable downloading dictionary content separately.

The Free Dictionary is another free online reference option, with multiple dictionaries, a thesaurus, encyclopedias and translations.

Verdict

Choose ABBYY Lingvo if you need offline multilingual reference, specialist dictionaries or lookup tools that work inside other content, especially on Windows. The main reason to look elsewhere is the cost and three-year term of its paid editions when your needs are limited to basic definitions; in that case, the free mobile dictionaries or a free online alternative are more proportionate.
