Overview

ABCD is a collection-management application for libraries, archives and museums that need to catalogue holdings and support related services. It is best suited to institutions that value configurable records and can manage an on-premise system. Its breadth and free software model are compelling, but the server requirement for the Backup Manager is a practical deployment consideration.

Key features

Cataloguing and database configuration

Cataloguing supports MARC, ISAD-G, Dublin Core and custom database models, giving institutions a choice between established standards and a structure tailored to their holdings. The Central module extends that flexibility to database structures, input screens, validation, pick-lists, and display, export and print formats. That is useful when a collection does not fit a single standard layout; it also makes ABCD a better fit for teams prepared to shape their database around local needs than for those seeking a fixed, ready-made catalogue.

Central can copy records from Z39.50-supporting catalogues and map MARC fields into custom fields. ABCD also includes management of Z39.50 searches and retrieval from remote databases, plus OAI metadata harvesting. These capabilities help institutions bring external records and metadata into their workflows.

Public access and lending

The OPAC can provide a searchable public site for an institution's catalogue, while circulation supports lending items to users and is described as highly customisable. Borrower portal and circulation tools are included, alongside custom reporting and MARC records. Together, these functions cover public discovery and lending as well as collection description, rather than limiting the system to a catalogue alone.

Acquisitions, security and backup

The procurement module manages purchase suggestions, quotations and purchasing decisions, covering several steps between identifying a need and deciding what to buy. The ABCD 3.3.0 release says image and document display checks login permissions and uses path checks to prevent access beyond allowed directories. Its Backup Manager has a specific server-side requirement: PHP's zip extension must be installed. Institutions should account for that dependency when planning an on-premise deployment.

Pricing

ABCD is free software. Its ABCD plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is described as free software for libraries and documentation centres. The free plan includes the catalogue and database capabilities, circulation tools, borrower portal, custom reporting and MARC records; there is no paid tier or seat or usage cap stated. There is no cheaper plan to compare, though institutions remain responsible for operating an on-premise deployment, including the PHP zip extension needed by the Backup Manager.

Platforms

ABCD is on-premise software and is listed for Linux, Windows and web use. The repository states support for Windows and Linux, so those are the stated operating-system targets; the web listing indicates browser access as a platform. This combination suits institutions that want to run the system within their own environment, rather than a service presented solely as hosted software.

Who it's for

ABCD is a strong candidate for libraries, archives and museums that need flexible cataloguing alongside lending, acquisitions and public catalogue access. Custom database models and configurable screens can serve collections with local requirements, while record imports and metadata harvesting support catalogue work across systems. It is less suitable for an organisation seeking a turnkey hosted product or one that does not want to handle server configuration and backup dependencies.

The project describes an ISIS email list for general and ABCD questions, with possible replies in Spanish, English or French. It also invites contributions through testing, documentation, translation, financial support, and GitHub feature or bug requests. That offers a route to ask questions or contribute, rather than a stated commercial support arrangement.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free software with cataloguing, circulation, acquisitions and OPAC functions, making it possible to cover several collection workflows in one system.
Pros: Support for multiple cataloguing standards and custom database models lets institutions adapt records to different types of holdings.
Pros: Z39.50 imports and retrieval, MARC field mapping and OAI harvesting support work with records and metadata from external sources.
Cons: On-premise deployment means the institution must operate its own environment rather than rely on a hosted service.
Cons: The Backup Manager depends on PHP's zip extension on the server, adding a requirement to deployment and backup planning.

Alternatives

For a school-library shortlist, see School Library Management Software.

Koha is another free option with a free plan. Choose it if GNU GPL v3-or-later software is the preference; self-installation requires a Linux server, root access and command-line work.
Lyra is a paid web option with a free trial and patron-capped plans: P150 is 795.00 USD per year for up to 150 patrons, and P400 is 1495.00 USD per year for up to 400 patrons; both include all features. It is a better fit when a school wants a priced, patron-count-based subscription.
Surpass is a paid web and Windows product with a free trial. Its K-12 cloud plans are capped by holdings and students: Small Library costs 960.00 USD per year for up to 5,000 volumes and 1,000 students; Large Library costs 1440.00 USD per year. Consider it when those stated school-library limits suit the institution.
Artemis offers a free trial and annual custom pricing. Its base price excludes Acquisitions, Syndetics Unbound, Auto-Calling and Gabbie®, so compare carefully if those functions matter.
Oliver is a paid web product with API support and quote-based pricing.
Sonet Examination Management System is a paid web product.
Accessit Library is a paid Android, iOS and web option with organisation-specific estimates; third-party integration fees may apply.
Atriuum offers paid Android, iOS and web options, including managed hosting and SaaS.

Verdict

Choose ABCD if your library, archive or museum needs a free, configurable system spanning cataloguing, lending, acquisitions and public access, and can support an on-premise installation. Its adaptable database tools and record-exchange capabilities are the clearest reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if you need a hosted service or want to avoid server administration and the Backup Manager's PHP extension requirement.
