Overview

ABCmouse is a subscription-based early-learning program for children ages 2–8, bringing core school subjects together with creative activities. It is best suited to families who want one broad curriculum for young learners, rather than an app focused on a single skill.

Its breadth is the draw; the trade-offs are a 10-activity daily cap on the free family plan and the requirement to use an app on phones and tablets.

Key features

A broad early-learning curriculum

More than 13,000 activities span reading, math, science, social studies, art, and music. Personalized Learning Paths give children a structured route through the material; Premium includes the full Reading and Math paths. That makes ABCmouse a stronger fit for families seeking an ongoing mix of subjects than for those who only need a narrow reading or math supplement.

The plan comparison also includes a Parent Dashboard, customizable avatars, tickets and rewards, STEM activities, coding fundamentals, and Pet Town. These give the program several ways to engage children beyond lesson content, although the free Basic plan limits how much a child can do each day.

Progress and classroom use

Learning Path progress, avatar customizations, and My World updates sync between the mobile app and a desktop or laptop browser. The continuity is useful for households that switch devices, but mobile web browsers are not supported: phone and tablet users need the app.

ABCmouse for Teachers is a separate free, web-based option for PreK–2nd grade educators to manage classes, assign digital homework, and share printable resources. Individual free educator accounts are for classroom use in the U.S. and Canada. Teachers can access it through Clever; district-level Clever connections are available to schools that buy Enterprise.

ABCmouse says its first real-world organization content partnership is with Major League Baseball. ABCmouse Classic says it complies with COPPA and applicable laws and does not use personally identifiable data for advertising or marketing. Live customer help is available Monday through Saturday, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time.

Pricing

ABCmouse is freemium, with a free family tier, paid Premium subscriptions, and optional Assessment Center add-ons. The free Basic plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes ad-free access, up to 10 activities per day, and one child profile. It is a practical way to try a limited daily routine, but it is restrictive for children who want longer sessions or for households with more than one child.

ABCmouse Premium monthly costs 14.99 USD per month, billed at $14.99/month. It includes 13,000+ activities, up to three child profiles, and full Reading and Math Learning Paths. Web signups include a 30-day free trial. This is the straightforward paid choice for families who prefer monthly billing, though the recurring monthly price is higher over a year than the introductory annual rate.

ABCmouse Premium annual costs 45.00 USD per year: $45 for the first year, then renews at $59.99/year (plus tax). It includes the same 13,000+ activities, up to three profiles, and full Reading and Math Learning Paths. Billing begins as soon as signup is completed. The first-year price is substantially lower than paying monthly for a year, but families should account for the higher renewal rate.

The Assessment Center is an optional add-on for Premium members: 3.99 USD per month, added to the ABCmouse Monthly Premium Plan, or 39.99 USD per year, added to the ABCmouse Annual Premium Plan. A 30-day free trial is available for the monthly add-on on web, Google Play, Amazon, and Samsung signups. These charges sit on top of Premium rather than replacing it.

Platforms

ABCmouse supports Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows. The browser version is for desktop or laptop use; phones and tablets must use the app. Progress and selected child updates sync between app and desktop or laptop browser. Offline play is supported.

Who it's for

ABCmouse is a good match for families with children ages 2–8 who want a broad, structured curriculum and up to three profiles under Premium. The free teacher tool is suited to U.S. and Canadian PreK–2nd grade educators who need class management, homework assignments, and printable resources. It is less suitable for families who require mobile-browser access or need the free plan to support multiple profiles or unrestricted daily use.

Pros and cons

Pros: More than 13,000 activities cover six subject areas, giving young learners more variety than a single-subject program.
Pros: Premium supports up to three child profiles and full Reading and Math Learning Paths, which fits families sharing one subscription.
Pros: Progress and selected customizations sync between the app and desktop or laptop browser, and offline play is supported.
Pros: A free, ad-free Basic tier and a separate free educator tool provide ways to use the program without a family Premium subscription.
Cons: Basic allows only 10 activities per day and one child profile, limiting its usefulness as a full-time option.
Cons: Phone and tablet users cannot use the mobile website and must install the app.
Cons: The annual Premium price rises from $45 in year one to $59.99/year plus tax at renewal.

Alternatives

For a wider set of options, browse our Preschool Learning Apps and Educational Games lists.

Duolingo is a freemium choice with a free plan and a one-week free trial, available on Android, iOS, macOS, and web; choose it when those platforms and its free entry point suit better than ABCmouse’s early-learning curriculum.

LetterSchool has a free app covering the first five uppercase and lowercase letters, five shapes, and three CVC flashcards with nine words. It is a narrower free starting point if that limited content is enough.

Lingokids offers a Basic tier with one child profile and 10 games per day, plus a Plus tier with up to four profiles and 4,000+ activities. Its larger stated profile allowance may suit a bigger household, while ABCmouse has a broader stated activity library.

Khan Academy has a free plan and supports Android, iOS, and web. Its Enterprise Starter plan is $10/student/year for 1,000 or fewer student licenses at U.S. schools and districts, making it an alternative to consider in a school setting.

ABC Kids is a free-to-download option for iOS, Android, and Windows.

Teach Your Monster to Read offers all games free through its website on computers and laptops, a fit for families prioritizing free computer-based play.

Reading Eggs is a paid alternative with a 13.99 USD per month Reading & Math plan for up to four children. Consider it if a four-child allowance matters more than ABCmouse’s mix of subjects.

GCompris is free educational software with more than 100 activities, for readers seeking a free option on Android, Linux, macOS, or Windows.

Verdict

Choose ABCmouse if you want a broad, structured early-learning curriculum for children ages 2–8, especially when multiple child profiles and full Reading and Math Learning Paths justify Premium. The free Basic tier is useful for a short daily routine, not an unrestricted substitute; families who need mobile-browser access or a more generous free allowance should look elsewhere.
