Overview

Adagio is studio-management software for music teachers who want to connect lessons, student practice, and billing. Its broad free tier makes it a strong starting point for independent teachers, while schools and larger studios have an organization option.

Its main trade-off is that students must be at least 13 and choose to share practice data before teachers can see it. That makes Adagio less suitable where younger students or automatic practice reporting are essential.

Key features

Teachers get lesson scheduling, homework, goals, class or lesson notes, a calendar, and attendance tracking. Students can record practice sessions, notes, and to-do lists in the Practice app, and teachers can track practice time. Comments, a social feed, and levels and points tied to practice give students ways to stay involved between lessons, though the opt-in sharing requirement means practice records are not automatically visible to teachers.

Billing supports manually created invoices or invoices generated after a completed lesson, with digital payment options such as PayPal and email reminders for overdue bills. Automated billing and invoices are reserved for Premium, so teachers who want to reduce routine invoicing work will need the paid plan. Adagio also describes API connections for bringing current tools and data into the service.

The Organization Plan supports multiple teachers and classrooms, administrative oversight, and shared class access, making it the more relevant setup for schools and larger studios. Students can find the Practice app in the Apple or Google app stores by searching for Musopen.

Adagio says it does not share personally identifiable information with other organizations for their marketing or promotional use. It also says it uses commercially reasonable measures to protect personal information, while noting that internet transmissions cannot be guaranteed completely secure.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
Free Plan	0.00 USD per month (billed $0 USD/mo)	Unlimited students, calendar, lesson scheduler, homework, goals, class feed, billing, and a free website.
Premium plan	5.00 USD per month (billed $5 USD/mo)	All Free Plan features, automated billing and invoices, custom domain support, newsletters, practice audio, and free Musopen Pro membership.
Organization Plan	Custom pricing	Multiple teachers and classrooms, administrative oversight, and shared class access.

The Free Plan is unusually capable for teachers who can manage billing manually: unlimited students and core scheduling and teaching tools are included. Premium costs 5.00 USD per month and is the better fit for teachers who want automated invoices, newsletters, custom-domain support, or practice audio. Organization is aimed at larger operations rather than a solo studio.

Platforms

Adagio is available on web, Android, and iOS. The student Practice app is distributed through the Apple and Google app stores under the search name Musopen.

Who it's for

Independent music teachers can use the free tier to organize lessons, assignments, attendance, and billing without a student cap. Teachers seeking automated invoicing or additional communication tools have a clear upgrade path to Premium. Schools and large studios should consider the Organization Plan; teachers who need practice data shared without student opt-in, or who teach users under 13, should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: The free plan supports unlimited students and includes scheduling, homework, goals, billing, and a website, reducing the need to pay just to manage a growing studio.
Pros: Practice logging and student engagement tools extend the service beyond lesson administration.
Pros: Manual and post-lesson invoicing, digital payments, and overdue reminders cover common billing workflows.
Cons: Automated billing and invoices require Premium, so hands-off billing is not part of the free tier.
Cons: Teachers see shared practice records only when students opt in, and the minimum age is 13.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see Music Lesson Scheduling Software.

OPS is worth considering for musicians focused on score libraries and setlists; its free organization plan allows up to 20 pieces, three setlists, and two accounts.
CogNote may suit a studio that prefers self-hosted software; its free plan includes unlimited students, lessons, and sheet music.
Harness offers a free hobby plan capped at five students, with scheduling, attendance, family portal, and income and expense tracking.
Clefwise is an option for a small studio needing scheduling, invoicing, online payments, and a parent portal; its free plan is limited to three students.
Nova Music has a free plan for up to 10 students, including group lessons, basic attendance, direct messaging, and 100 MB of storage.
DuetStudio is another web-based option.
Trio may suit a solo teacher with up to 10 students who wants SMS reminders and AI credits in a free plan; online payments are excluded from that tier.
AMES is another freemium option for music teachers.

Verdict

Adagio is a strong choice for independent music teachers who want unlimited students, practical lesson tools, and billing without a monthly fee. Choose Premium at 5.00 USD per month when automated invoices or its added communication and practice tools justify the upgrade. Look elsewhere if students are under 13 or your teaching workflow depends on practice data being shared automatically.
