Overview

Edgegap combines game-server hosting and orchestration with matchmaking and a server browser, using public edge infrastructure. Its regionless service caches and deploys servers on demand across more than 615 locations without requiring an SDK. The orchestrator places deployments on an available server, which Edgegap says can reduce player latency by up to 58%; that makes broad geographic reach a useful option for multiplayer games, though the stated reduction is a potential, not a guarantee.

Hybrid orchestration can send workloads to a Private Fleet alongside Edge Cloud. That gives studios a way to pair elastic public capacity with persistent private servers. Founded in October 2018, Edgegap is based in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada.

Key features

Automated matchmaking and a server browser run on fully managed clusters. Plugins for Unity, Unreal Engine and Godot support containerizing and deploying game servers, while listed service integrations include Unity Gaming Services matchmaking, Heroic Labs Nakama, PlayFab and Epic Online Services Lobbies. Netcode integrations include Mirror, Unity Netcode for GameObjects, Fish Networking, Photon Fusion 2, PurrNet and Netfox. This breadth gives teams using those tools more ways to connect existing game systems to Edgegap.

Edgegap lists instant DDoS protection, and says DDoS protection is among the capabilities unlocked when a credit card is added. Its team supports live games 24/7, with community support and a documentation-trained AI chatbot also offered. Enterprise services add a dedicated 24/7 team, guaranteed response times and an uptime SLA, which is a more defined support commitment for larger operations.

The key hosting constraint is runtime: Edge Cloud containers are limited to 24 consecutive hours. Teams needing longer-running containers must use Private Fleets. Distributed Relays are for peer-to-peer networking; they provide neither compute nor authoritative game servers, so they cannot substitute for a hosting deployment.

Pricing

Edgegap's pricing is usage-based across several distinct services, so the right cost depends on whether a team needs hosting, matchmaking, relays or persistent capacity. Edge Cloud is shown at 0.00 USD per month, billed per vCPU per minute, with 0 active servers = $0 and $0.10/GB monthly egress. Deployments range from 0.25–4 vCPU, reach 615+ locations and have no commitment. This is a practical entry point for workloads that can scale down to zero, but egress charges and the 24-hour runtime limit matter.

The free trials are time-limited and have narrow operating caps. Matchmaking & Server Browser — Free Trial is 0.00 USD per free, billed Free trial on shared environment; time-limited to 3 hours; access to all features with limited resources. Game Server Hosting — Free Trial is 0.00 USD per free, billed No credit card; free trial; 1 app, 2 versions, 1.5 vCPU, usage caps, 1 concurrent deployment and a 60-minute uptime cap per deployment. Distributed Relays — Free Trial is 0.00 USD per free, billed Free trial; up to 50 CCU, 160 GB egress included and no compute. These are evaluation routes rather than durable free plans.

For dedicated matchmaking capacity, Matchmaking & Server Browser — Hobbyist is 0.03 USD per month, billed $0.0312/hour and estimated at $22/month at 24h/30d usage, with a dedicated environment, 1 vCPU and 2 GB RAM. Studio is 0.15 USD per month, billed $0.146/hour and estimated at $105/month at 24h/30d usage, with 6 vCPU and 12 GB RAM. Enterprise is 0.55 USD per month, billed $0.548/hour and estimated at $395/month at 24h/30d usage, with 18 vCPU and 48 GB RAM for high traffic. The larger tiers buy substantially more dedicated resources; readers should compare the hourly rates with their expected operating hours.

Private Fleet (Bare Metal) is 0.03 USD per month, billed per vCPU per hour, monthly and always on. It costs $280 per host/month at the 12-month rate or $350 monthly, and includes 58 locations, egress up to 6 TB per host/month, 16 vCPU per host (15 usable) and persistent 24/7 capacity. This suits workloads that must stay online or exceed Edge Cloud's runtime cap, but its always-on billing and term-based host price are less flexible than on-demand Edge Cloud.

Distributed Relays — 100 CCU is 8.00 USD per month, billed monthly, with 100 CCU and 325 GB egress included; Distributed Relays — 500 CCU is 115.00 USD per month, billed monthly, with 500 CCU and 1,625 GB egress included. Both remain networking relays, not game-server compute. The pricing model is paid and there is no free plan, so continuing use beyond trials requires a paid service.

Platforms

Edgegap supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, web and API platforms. Container support, persistent storage and custom domains are available. That combination suits teams shipping across mobile, desktop and browser targets, while the hosting model remains centered on containerized game servers.

Who it's for

Edgegap is a strong fit for game studios and developers building multiplayer titles that need matchmaking and geographically distributed server placement, including mobile, VR, extended reality and WebGL/HTML games. Teams that want persistent 24/7 capacity can consider Private Fleet. It is a weaker fit for projects that need Edge Cloud containers to run continuously beyond 24 hours, or teams seeking free ongoing hosting; relays alone will not host authoritative game logic.

Pros and cons

Pros: On-demand placement across more than 615 locations without an SDK can serve geographically dispersed players without committing every server to an always-on footprint.
Pros: Hybrid orchestration, managed matchmaking and a server browser bring public edge and private capacity into one offering.
Pros: Engine, service and netcode integrations cover Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot and several named multiplayer stacks.
Cons: Edge Cloud's 24-consecutive-hour runtime cap rules it out for containers that must remain running longer.
Cons: Relay plans include connection capacity and egress but no compute, so teams still need another service for authoritative servers.
Cons: There is no free plan, and trial offers carry short duration, resource or concurrency caps.
Cons: Private Fleet's persistent capacity is always on and costs $280 per host/month at the 12-month rate or $350 monthly.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison of matchmaking options, see Game Matchmaking Software; for backend platforms, see Game Backend Services.

Metaplay offers a free plan for local development with its full SDK and local server, so it may suit teams prioritizing local development without hard limits there. brainCloud has free development and support plans, making it an option for teams whose immediate need is free development or best-effort support. Unity Version Control is a freemium version-control option rather than a direct hosting match. Namazu Elements offers an open-source, self-hosted Community Edition, which may suit teams that prefer self-hosting. Photon Realtime has a free development-only tier with 20 concurrent users and 60.0 GB traffic/month, a narrower starting point for small development projects. GS2-Matchmaking offers a free Individual plan subject to an eligibility threshold, so it may suit eligible individuals or smaller businesses. AccelByte Gaming Services offers Public Cloud Foundations free while building, with usage fees as players arrive, which may appeal to teams seeking that build-stage pricing model. Colyseus has a free open-source option for self-hosting on a team's own servers, which suits teams prepared to operate their own infrastructure.

Verdict

Choose Edgegap if your multiplayer game needs managed matchmaking and on-demand server placement across a wide geographic footprint, especially when you want the option to add persistent Private Fleet capacity. Look elsewhere if you need a free ongoing plan or uninterrupted Edge Cloud containers beyond 24 hours; those limits are central to deciding whether its flexible deployment model fits your game.
