Overview

Ahrefs brings keyword and competitor research, rank tracking, backlink analysis, and site auditing together with content tools and API access. It suits SEO practitioners and teams that need to move between research and ongoing monitoring; its breadth is compelling, but project, keyword, crawl, and user allowances make plan choice consequential.

Its stated index and crawler scale—170 trillion pages in the web index, 41.9 billion tracked keywords, and 8 billion pages crawled daily by AhrefsBot—supports a broad research proposition. Those figures do not remove the practical limits on how much work each subscription can cover.

Key features

Research, monitoring, and audits

Keyword research and competitor research help users examine search demand and rival sites, while rank tracking follows selected terms and backlink analysis covers links. Site Audit adds a way to identify site issues and fixes. This combination is useful for recurring SEO work rather than a single narrow task, though lower paid tiers constrain projects, tracked keywords, and crawl credits.

Content and AI tools

Content Explorer finds web mentions and potential link prospects, extending Ahrefs beyond keyword and site analysis. AI Content Helper is intended to improve content. Ask Ahrefs is free during beta on Lite and higher plans, and Brand Radar starts at $199.00 USD per month for AI research and prompt tracking. Separate prompt packages cost $50.00 USD, $100.00 USD, or $250.00 USD per month, with 2,500, 7,000, or 25,000 checks respectively; overages are $0.020, $0.015, or $0.010 per check. These quotas and add-on prices matter for teams expecting frequent prompt checks.

Integrations, support, and administration

Ahrefs offers native integration, Looker Studio integration, connections to AI chatbots, API access, and MCP access. Multilingual support is available five days a week, with a median first response time of 5:58 minutes. Enterprise adds SSO, two-factor authentication, ISO27001 certification, access management, audit logs, and unlimited additional users, making it the clearest fit for organizations with formal access and security requirements.

Pricing

The free plan costs $0.00 USD and provides site data and fixes, with limited access to Site Explorer and Site Audit. It is a useful starting point for work on one's own site, but limited access makes it a poor substitute for full research and monitoring.

Starter costs $29.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes keyword and competitor research. It lowers the cost of entry for search research, but the stated plan does not give the project, tracking, and crawl allowances shown for higher subscriptions.

Lite costs $129.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords, 100,000 crawl credits per month, and one user. It is a practical tier for an individual or small workload; extra users cost $40 per month each, up to two more. Its 25,000-page project maximum is relevant for larger audits.

Standard is $249.00 USD per month, billed monthly, for 20 projects, 2,000 tracked keywords, 500,000 crawl credits per month, and one included user. It suits users whose monitoring or audit workload has outgrown Lite; up to five extra users cost $60 per month each.

Advanced costs $449.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and raises allowances to 50 projects, 5,000 tracked keywords, and 1,500,000 crawl credits per month, still with one included user. It is aimed at heavier multi-project work, although teams should account for the $80 monthly cost for each of up to ten additional users.

Enterprise starts at $1,499.00 USD per month and requires an annual commitment. It includes from three users, from 10,000 tracked keywords, from 5,000,000 crawl credits per month, and unlimited historical data. Its scale and administration controls fit larger teams, but the annual commitment is a significant step up from monthly plans. Annual payment saves up to 17%. No trial or refund policy is stated.

Platforms

Ahrefs is available on the web and through API access, with AI assistants and MCP access also part of the platform. That supports both browser-based workflows and programmatic use, rather than a desktop-only setup.

Who it's for

Ahrefs is best suited to SEO professionals and teams that need research, auditing, link analysis, and rank monitoring in one platform, and can match a subscription to their project and usage volume. The free plan can serve site owners focused on their own data and fixes. It is less suitable for buyers who need generous team seats or large audit and tracking allowances at the lowest monthly cost.

Pros and cons

Broad SEO coverage: keyword and competitor research, rank tracking, backlink analysis, and Site Audit cover complementary tasks in one platform.
Content discovery beyond rankings: Content Explorer finds mentions and link prospects, while AI Content Helper adds a content-improvement function.
Useful entry points: a free site-focused plan and a $29.00 USD monthly Starter tier let users begin without committing to a larger subscription.
Paid-plan limits are material: Lite starts at $129.00 USD per month, includes one user, and caps projects, keywords, and crawl credits; additional seats cost extra.
Enterprise is a substantial commitment: its $1,499.00 USD monthly starting price requires an annual commitment, despite adding scale, controls, and historical data.

Alternatives

For a crawl-focused alternative, Netpeak Spider has a free tier for 500 URLs, five threads, and two devices per user, plus a free trial; it may suit users prioritizing a limited desktop crawl on Windows or macOS.

Screaming Frog SEO Spider offers a free crawl of 500 URLs and a paid licence with unlimited URLs, making it worth considering when crawl volume is the main concern.

Semrush has a free plan with one demo project and 10 reports per day, an option for buyers who want to begin with a capped report-based allowance.

Moz Pro starts at $49.00 USD per month for its Starter plan, aimed at individuals managing one website; it is an alternative for that narrower setup.

SiteGuru offers a $49.00 USD monthly Small plan for five websites and 5,000 pages per site, with 2,500 keywords per site, responsive support, MCP access, and white-label reporting. It may fit a buyer whose priority is a defined multi-site allowance at a lower entry price.

Click Insights starts at $12.00 USD per month and includes 100 daily tracked keywords, five projects, five competitors per project, and 1,000 backlink rows; it may suit a buyer looking for a lower-cost, explicitly capped starting plan.

SEO PowerSuite has a free plan with one project, 500 URLs, 1,100 backlinks, and one competitor per project, making it an option for a small capped workload.

Dragon Metrics is another paid SEO platform to consider.

Verdict

Choose Ahrefs if SEO research, monitoring, audits, and link and content discovery belong in the same workflow, and its quotas match your workload. Its main advantage is that breadth; its main drawback is the cost and seat limits as needs grow. Look elsewhere if you need a cheaper, tightly scoped crawler or more seats without paying for a higher tier.
