Overview

Lecturers can upload rubrics in DOCX, PDF, or plain text and add submissions individually or as a class. The platform drafts grades against the rubric and supplies quoted evidence for review. A lecturer must review, edit, and approve each grade before it is released, making UniRubric a poor fit for workflows that require unattended grading and release.

Support for analytic and holistic rubrics, AI assistance, and bulk scoring covers more than one marking style. Faculty leads also get a dashboard for calibration across markers, with tools to draft a meeting agenda and schedule a calibration meeting. Those capabilities make the product relevant to departments as well as individual lecturers, but institutional plans add teacher-account costs to per-student charges.

Key features

Evidence-linked draft grades: Quoted evidence gives lecturers something concrete to check against rubric criteria. Human approval remains mandatory, so the system assists marking without taking final grading authority.
Flexible marking workflow: Upload a rubric as DOCX, PDF, or plain text, then add work individually or as a class. Bulk scoring is useful for larger cohorts, although every grade still needs lecturer review.
LMS connections: Institutional plans support Canvas, Moodle, and Blackboard through LTI 1.3, with Brightspace also included in the contracting-page integration list. Assignment & Grade Services are in active rollout, so institutions should not assume that rollout is complete.
Institutional data controls: Customer data, student work, rubrics, and grading runs are region-pinned to Sydney, Australia, with no cross-region replication under standard operating conditions. The maker states that data is encrypted in transit with TLS 1.3 and at rest with AES-256, with per-tenant column encryption for sensitive student identifiers. Submissions, grades, edits, and feedback are not used to train or fine-tune models.
Retention and support access: Deleted assignments are hard-deleted from production within 24 hours and removed from backups within 35 days, while grading-run audit logs are retained for seven years. Staff access customer data only through institution-opened support tickets, and access is logged and limited to data the institution directs them to.

The security page describes the product as aligned with the AU Privacy Act, GDPR, FERPA, and TEQSA. SOC 2 Type I is a Q4 2026 roadmap target, not a completed certification.

Pricing

UniRubric is freemium, with a one-job free tier and paid options for individual lecturers and institutions. The free plan is a useful way to evaluate one complete marking job, but it is not a continuing free allowance.

Lecturer Free: 0.00 USD per free, billed One lifetime marking job. It includes one marking job, full rubric-anchored output, approval before release, PDF export, and no credit card requirement. Choose it to assess a single job; it will not support recurring marking without a paid option.
Top-up packs: 1.00 USD per once, billed Per extra run via top-up packs, sold in small packs. Runs beyond the free lecturer job or Premium allowance require sign-off, so this suits occasional extra use when a subscription is not warranted.
Lecturer Premium · monthly: 15.00 USD per month, billed Monthly. It includes 15 runs per calendar month, $1 per extra run via top-up packs, six-month rollover, priority queue, and cancellation any time. This is the flexible option for lecturers with regular marking needs.
Lecturer Premium · annual: 180.00 USD per year, billed Paid up front. It includes 15 runs per month, $1 per extra run via top-up packs, six-month rollover, and the ability to cancel renewal any time. It provides the same stated monthly run allowance as the monthly plan, but requires payment up front.
Institutional Light: 9.00 USD per year, billed Per student per term. It allows 10 runs per student per term; the annual marking line item scales by students and terms per year. Teacher account services are $18/month/account, and local tax is added to the formal quote. This is the lowest institutional run allowance.
Institutional Standard: 15.00 USD per year, billed Per student per term. It allows 25 runs per student per term, with the annual marking line item scaling by students and terms per year. Teacher account services are $18/month/account, and local tax is added to the formal quote. It is the middle allowance for institutions that need more runs than Light provides.
Institutional Heavy: 25.00 USD per year, billed Per student per term. It allows 60 runs per student per term; the annual marking line item scales by students and terms per year. Teacher account services are $18/month/account, and local tax is added to the formal quote. It is the highest stated institutional run allowance.

A free trial is also offered. Institutional costs depend on student numbers and terms per year, and teacher accounts are charged separately, so the per-student figure alone is not the full cost. The published paid-from figure is $15/mo.

Platforms

UniRubric is available on web and through an API. Its institutional LMS support connects to Canvas, Moodle, and Blackboard using LTI 1.3; Brightspace is also included in the institutional integration list. Assignment & Grade Services remain in active rollout.

Who it's for

Lecturers who want rubric-anchored draft grades and retain control over approval are the clearest fit. Faculty leads can use the calibration dashboard to coordinate marking discussions, while universities can consider the per-student plans and LMS integrations. Students are part of the grading workflow, but UniRubric is not a student-facing autonomous grader: lecturers approve grades before release. The maker also describes researchers studying marking as an audience.

Pros and cons

Pro: Quoted evidence accompanies rubric-based drafts, giving lecturers a review basis rather than an unexplained grade.
Pro: Mandatory review and approval preserve lecturer control over every released grade.
Pro: Institutional plans combine LMS connections with faculty calibration tools, supporting department-level marking workflows.
Con: The free tier covers just one lifetime marking job, so ongoing individual use requires top-ups or Premium.
Con: Institutional pricing scales by students and terms, with teacher accounts at $18/month/account and local tax added to the quote.
Con: Every grade requires lecturer review and approval, which rules out fully unattended grading workflows.

Alternatives

Rubric Software is the broader category directory for comparing rubric tools. Choose Gradescope instead if you want its free Basic assignment types, dynamic rubrics, question-by-question grading, assignment statistics, regrade requests, and data export; it also supports Android, iOS, and web.

Rubric Scorer is an alternative for Android and iOS users; its free app covers up to three rubrics for one class. GradeBoard is a web option whose free plan includes 10 learner submissions a month, limited rubric uploads, DOCX annotated download, basic analytics, 30-day data retention, and email support.

OpenRubric is another option. RubriqFlow is another option. Pawtograder is another option. Quick Rubric is another option. Rubric IQ is another option.

Verdict

Choose UniRubric if you teach in higher education and want AI to draft rubric-based grades with quoted evidence while keeping approval in lecturers' hands. Its strongest case is the combination of review-first grading and institutional LMS and calibration tools. Look elsewhere if you need grades released without human review, or if the one-job free tier and the applicable run and account charges do not suit your marking volume.
