Overview

Algolia is a cloud search platform for teams adding search to websites, apps, and digital products through an API. It is best suited to developers and product teams that need to tune relevance as well as retrieve results. Its combination of search and merchandising tools is compelling, but the free tier’s small index and application limits call for an early capacity check.

Search combines keyword and semantic methods, with REST queries and vector and faceted search. Algolia says its average response time is under 20 milliseconds and that it processes more than 1 billion queries every 5 seconds. Those company-stated figures indicate the service’s intended scale, not a promise for every deployment. Founded in 2012, Algolia is headquartered in San Francisco.

Key features

Beyond retrieval, Algolia offers autocomplete, AI Synonyms, AI Ranking, personalization, merchandising, query categorization, analytics, A/B testing, and a crawler. That range is useful for commerce and content teams that want to refine result ordering and presentation, then assess how search performs. NeuralSearch, AI Collections, and Smart Groups are reserved for Elevate, so teams needing those tools should expect an enterprise contract.

InstantSearch libraries cover JavaScript, React, Vue, Angular, iOS, and Android, with API clients for multiple programming languages. Integrations include Shopify, BigCommerce, Adobe, commercetools, Supabase, Salesforce, Segment, and Google Tag Manager. This gives developers several routes into common storefront and analytics setups without changing the product’s API-first approach.

Grow and Grow Plus offer US, UK, and EU hosting; Elevate offers global hosting. Algolia’s Trust Center lists SOC 2, ISO 27001:2022, ISO 27017, GDPR, CCPA, and BSI Cloud Computing Compliance Criteria Catalogue, as well as encrypted data transmission and data encryption. Support ranges from community access to 24/7 enterprise-grade response times, and professional services are optional. That breadth makes the platform relevant to larger and regulated teams, though the support level depends on the plan.

Pricing

Algolia uses a freemium model. Free costs 0.00 USD per free and requires no credit card. It includes 10K search requests/month, 50K records, 5K recommendation requests/month, and 5K crawls/month. The plan is aimed at getting started, new projects, startups, small online stores, and exploration. Its 1 GB index size and 20 maximum indices per application make it a practical trial or small-project option, not an assumption-free choice for a growing catalog.

Grow costs 0.50 USD per month, billed monthly with no contract required. It includes 10K search requests/month and 100K records; additional records cost $0.40 per 1K. It provides 10 rules/index and 30 days of analytics retention, with a 100 GB index size and 50 indices per application. This is the lower-cost paid step for projects that have outgrown Free, but the request allowance remains 10K/month.

Grow Plus costs 1.75 USD per month, billed monthly with no contract required. It has the same included search requests and records, and the same additional-record charge, as Grow. Its 10,000 rules/index, AI Synonyms, AI Ranking, Advanced Personalization, and 90 days of analytics retention make it a better fit for teams actively tuning relevance. It does not raise the stated monthly search-request allowance.

Elevate has custom pricing on an annual contract, with volume-based discounts and custom search-request and record allowances. It adds NeuralSearch, AI Collections, Smart Groups, 99.99% availability, SSO, enhanced SLA access, and enterprise support plans. It fits organizations that need those capabilities and contract-level service commitments; an annual agreement is a substantial step up from the monthly, no-contract Grow plans.

Platforms

Algolia is a cloud deployment available on web, Android, and iOS, with API access. The REST query interface and platform-specific InstantSearch libraries give teams a direct way to build search into those environments.

Who it's for

Algolia is a strong fit for developers and product teams building site or ecommerce search who need hybrid retrieval and tools to manage relevance, merchandising, and analytics. Its free plan gives small projects a way to start without a credit card, while Grow Plus and Elevate serve teams that need more advanced ranking, personalization, capacity, or service commitments. It is less suited to projects that cannot work within the Free plan’s 1 GB index and 20-index cap, or that need more than 10K monthly search requests without moving to a plan with a higher allowance.

Pros and cons

Pros: Hybrid, vector, and faceted search are complemented by tools for autocomplete, merchandising, analytics, and result tuning, covering more of the search lifecycle than retrieval alone.
Pros: Free has no credit-card requirement, and the monthly Grow plans require no contract, giving smaller projects a low-commitment path to adoption.
Pros: Libraries for web frameworks and mobile platforms, plus integrations with commerce and analytics services, support varied implementation choices.
Cons: Free is capped at a 1 GB index and 20 indices per application, which may constrain expanding projects.
Cons: Grow and Grow Plus include only 10K search requests/month; Grow Plus improves rules, ranking, personalization, and analytics retention but does not raise that allowance.
Cons: NeuralSearch and enterprise service commitments require Elevate’s custom-priced annual contract.

Alternatives

For API management rather than search, compare API Management Software, Search Analytics Software, and Search Databases to explore adjacent categories.

Kong Gateway is an API gateway alternative with a 30-day free trial and API, Linux, self-hosted, and web platforms; choose it when gateway management, rather than search, is the need. DreamFactory offers a free open-source plan with a PostgreSQL connector and a paid Linux Lite plan; consider it for API generation centered on database connectors. Gravitee API Gateway has a free Apache 2.0 Community Edition and paid Planet plan; it is an alternative when an API gateway is the requirement. Google Cloud Endpoints has a free usage tier with 1,999,999 API calls; consider it for API management with usage-based pricing. Hasura has a free plan capped at two databases per project, 100MB data passthrough/month, and 3M API requests/month; choose it when those API and database limits suit the project. Apigee API hub is available at no additional cost to eligible Apigee organizations in supported regions, making it relevant to those organizations. Tyk API Management offers a flat-rate Professional plan with unlimited API gateways, APIs, and API requests/month; consider it when those API-management needs take priority. Amazon API Gateway is another API gateway option.

Verdict

Choose Algolia if you are building site or ecommerce search and want developers to have both hybrid search and a broad toolkit for improving results over time. The free entry point and broad integration support make it accessible to smaller teams, but check request and index limits against expected growth before committing. Look elsewhere if your project needs API gateway management rather than search, or if the required scale and enterprise features make an annual custom-priced plan a poor fit.
