Overview

Google Lens turns a camera view, image, or screenshot into a search, making it a strong fit for people who want to identify or investigate something they can see. Its breadth is the appeal; the main caveat is that Chrome page searches send page data to Google and require Google as the default search engine.

Key features

Search, identify, and shop from images

Lens can search from a live camera view, an image, or a screenshot, which is useful when you do not know the right words to describe what you see. It can identify plants and animals and provide information about artwork, murals, and landmarks. For shoppers, it can find a pictured item’s maker, price, and purchase locations, with refinements for pattern, color, or size. That makes Lens useful for moving from recognition to comparison, though shopping results are available only in specified countries across Europe, Asia-Pacific, Africa, and the Americas.

Translate and copy text

Lens translates visible text in more than 100 languages and can copy it to a phone or computer. These tools suit travelers and anyone moving text from a physical or digital image into another device; they also make Lens more than a product-finding tool.

Ask questions and create

In the Google app, Lens can answer questions about what you see and surface homework explainers, videos, and web results across math, history, chemistry, biology, and physics. This gives students a visual starting point for exploring a subject, rather than only a way to identify an object. Create mode can also change a photo’s style using a prompt.

Search web pages in Chrome

On Chrome desktop, Lens lets users select web content, search it, and ask questions without leaving the current tab. The convenience comes with a meaningful trade-off: the feature requires Google as the default search engine, and Google says it sends a screenshot of the page and page data to Google. Google also says users can manage, export, and delete information and adjust privacy settings across its services; saved media from Search services can include images used in Lens and can be reviewed in Search Services History.

Pricing

Google Lens is free: the Google Lens plan is free. No price or usage limits are stated for the plan. That makes it an easy option for occasional lookups as well as regular use, without a paid tier to unlock the core capabilities.

Platforms

Lens is available on Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows. Google lists access through the Google app, Chrome, Google Photos, and the Camera app on select Android devices, so the experience can fit into several existing Google workflows.

Who it's for

Lens suits people who want one free tool for visual identification, translation, text copying, shopping discovery, and question-led searches. It is particularly useful when the starting point is an image rather than a phrase. Students may value its subject-spanning homework results, while shoppers benefit from product matching and refinements where shopping results are available. Readers who do not want Chrome page content sent to Google, or do not want Google as their default search engine, should avoid relying on its Chrome page-search feature.

Pros and cons

Pro: One free service handles image search, identification, translation, copying, shopping, and questions, reducing the need to switch tools for these visual tasks.
Pro: Product results can include maker, price, and purchase locations, with pattern, color, and size refinements for a closer match.
Pro: Text translation covers over 100 languages, and copied text can go to a phone or computer.
Con: Chrome page searches require Google as the default search engine and send a screenshot and page data to Google.
Con: Shopping results are limited to specified countries, so product discovery may be less useful outside those markets.

Verdict

Choose Google Lens if you want a free, broad visual-search tool for identifying things, handling text, discovering products, or exploring questions from an image. Its range across Google products is the clearest reason to pick it. Look elsewhere if Chrome page-search privacy or the Google-default-search requirement is a deal-breaker, or if you need shopping results in a country where they are unavailable.
