Overview

Amazon DynamoDB is AWS’s fully managed, distributed NoSQL database for applications that need fast access without running database servers. It is best suited to teams building internet-scale, mission-critical, agentic, modernization, or IoT workloads on AWS. Its managed scaling and multi-Region options are compelling, but the capacity model deserves careful choice: provisioned capacity can be billed beyond actual use.

Key features

Scaling and data access

DynamoDB removes server provisioning and patching, and automatically scales tables. On-demand mode can scale to zero and avoids capacity planning, making it a sensible fit when request volumes are variable. Provisioned capacity instead lets teams specify read and write capacity, with optional auto scaling; that control comes with billing for the capacity specified even when the application uses less.

Primary keys anchor access, while global and local secondary indexes support queries through alternate keys. Native vector search adds similarity search and agent-memory use cases. The maximum value size is 0.4 MB, so workloads requiring larger individual values should look elsewhere. Data persists on disk; TTL support and HTTP(S), JSON, and PartiQL protocols offer additional ways to work with the service.

Multi-Region, security, and recovery

Global tables support multi-Region, multi-active operation, and AWS says they are designed for up to 99.999% availability. That is useful for applications that need activity across Regions, though it is an AWS design target, not a guarantee for every application.

Data is encrypted in transit and at rest by default. IAM policies can restrict access down to specific items and attributes, while AWS KMS, IAM, and VPC endpoints with AWS PrivateLink are among the AWS integrations. AWS says its security controls and compliance standards address requirements of governments, global banks, and other high-sensitivity organizations.

Point-in-time recovery provides continuous backups with per-second granularity and can restore data within a configured window of 1 to 35 days. That is a useful recovery option for teams that need to restore to a recent point rather than rely only on periodic backups.

Pricing

DynamoDB is freemium, with a free tier and two capacity approaches. The free tier uses provisioned capacity and the Standard table class; its request volume is described as about 200 million requests per month, depending on item size.

Plan	Price	What it includes
Free tier	0.00 USD per free	Billed per Region, per-payer account basis; 25 WCUs, 25 RCUs, 25 GB storage, and 25 replicated WCUs.
DynamoDB Free Tier	0.00 USD per free	Billed each month, per Region, per payer account; 25 WCUs, 25 RCUs, 25 rWCUs for global tables across two AWS Regions, 25 GB storage, 2.5 million stream read requests, and 1 GB data transfer out.
On-demand capacity	Custom pricing	Pay per read and write request, with automatic scaling and no capacity planning.
Provisioned capacity	Custom pricing	Specify read and write capacity; charged for provisioned capacity, with optional auto scaling.

The two free-tier descriptions both include 25 WCUs, 25 RCUs, and 25 GB of storage, while the monthly description also spells out stream reads, data transfer, and replicated capacity across two Regions. On-demand is the more direct fit when usage varies and avoiding unused-capacity charges matters. Provisioned capacity suits teams that want to set capacity, but its charge applies to specified capacity even if actual consumption is lower.

Platforms

DynamoDB is a cloud deployment available across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, and web environments, as well as through its API.

Who it's for

DynamoDB is a strong fit for teams building scalable applications that benefit from managed operations, indexed access, multi-Region tables, and AWS security integrations. Its vector search also makes it relevant to similarity-search and agent-memory workloads. It is less suitable when individual values exceed 0.4 MB or when teams do not want capacity-based billing decisions.

Pros and cons

Managed scaling: no servers to provision or patch, and tables can scale automatically, including to zero in on-demand mode.
Flexible access: primary keys and global and local secondary indexes support alternate query paths; native vector search extends the service to similarity-search use cases.
Multi-Region and recovery: global tables support multi-active operation, and point-in-time recovery offers per-second granularity over a configured 1-to-35-day window.
Capacity billing can penalize low usage: provisioned capacity is billed as specified, even when the application consumes less.
Value-size ceiling: the 0.4 MB maximum value size rules out workloads built around larger individual values.

Alternatives

For a broad comparison, browse Key-Value Databases, Multimodel Databases, or Database Software.

Aerospike Database is worth considering for teams seeking a freemium option with a Community Edition described as supporting 8 nodes, 2.5 TB of data, and 2 namespaces.
Google Cloud Bigtable is an alternative for teams comparing a paid database with Enterprise, Enterprise Plus, and Data Boost plans.
Upstash Redis may suit teams looking for a freemium option whose Free plan includes 256 MB of data, 10 GB monthly bandwidth, and 500K monthly commands.
Riak KV is a free, Apache 2-licensed option with a key-value data module, built-in masterless replication, and HTTP API and Protocol Buffers.
RocksDB is a free, open-source C++ library for teams considering a library rather than a managed cloud database.
TiKV is a free alternative to consider.
etcd is free, Apache 2.0-licensed, self-hosted software.
Infinispan is a free Apache 2.0-licensed option offered as an embedded library or standalone server.

Verdict

Choose DynamoDB if you want AWS to manage a distributed NoSQL database that scales automatically and supports indexed access, multi-Region operation, and point-in-time recovery. Its main appeal is that operational burden can stay low as workloads grow; look elsewhere if the 0.4 MB value limit is restrictive or you need to avoid paying for specified capacity you do not use.
