Overview

Android SMS Gateway connects software to a phone and SIM you control, so teams can send messages through their mobile operator using a real mobile number. It suits developers and organizations that want SIM-based messaging for OTPs, alerts, transactions or campaigns. Its strongest case is direct control over the sending number; the trade-off is responsibility for the phone, connection and carrier costs.

Key features

Messages come from the connected SIM, and replies can return to its inbox. Two-way SMS, inbound messages, contact management and delivery reports support workflows that need replies or delivery visibility, though reports depend on the device and carrier path.

Teams can schedule sends, configure auto-replies, and use MMS or USSD where the handset and operator support them. Excel and CSV imports with spreadsheet-column personalization make campaign setup practical without building a separate contact pipeline.

The REST/JSON API runs over HTTPS, with webhooks for inbound messages, delivery reports and system events. Examples cover PHP, Python, Node.js, Java and C#. Multi-device plans can spread traffic over phones and SIMs and provide failover if a device drops—useful for teams that need more capacity or resilience, but it also means maintaining multiple handsets and connections.

The maker describes HTTPS, API keys, two-factor authentication, scoped tokens, session management and security monitoring. SOC 2 certification remains on its roadmap; it does not currently have a completed SOC 2 Type I or Type II report. It processes account and contact details, usage and device metadata, delivery reports and support correspondence, and says it does not sell personal information for advertising.

Pricing

The Free plan is free and includes one Android device, 300 SMS lifetime and 300 contacts. That is enough to evaluate a small workflow, but not a continuing messaging service. Demo messages append a www.sms-gateway.app footer, which makes the free allowance a poor fit for polished customer-facing traffic.

Starter costs 19.00 USD per month for two devices and unlimited platform send volume; it is the entry point for ongoing use across one or two phones. Professional costs 39.00 USD per month for five devices, while Business costs 77.00 USD per month for 15 devices. Those tiers suit teams that need more phone-based routes; the higher prices buy device capacity rather than a larger stated SMS quota.

Developer costs 50.00 USD per year, billed yearly, for one device and 25,000 SMS per year. Its annual allowance may suit a developer with predictable volume, but it gives up the multi-device capacity of the monthly tiers and has a defined yearly quota rather than unlimited platform send volume.

All paid plans still rely on customer-supplied Android hardware, SIMs, operator SMS credit, power and internet. Operator charges and fair-use rules apply separately, so “unlimited” describes platform send volume, not carrier service. Free, Starter and Developer include email support with a 24–48 hour response window; Professional has priority email, and Business includes email and phone support. The Free plan is the stated free option; a free trial is also offered.

Platforms

The service combines Android with a web panel and API. The app requires Android 5.0 or newer; features such as USSD require Android 8.0 or newer. The Android device, SIM, stable power and internet are operational dependencies, not incidental setup details.

Who it's for

Choose it when your team controls the SIMs and wants software-driven messaging from those numbers, including replies to the handset inbox. It can suit developers integrating messaging through an API and teams managing alerts or campaigns across phones. Look elsewhere if you need a service that removes handset upkeep, carrier-credit management or operator fair-use constraints from your responsibilities.

Pros and cons

Pro: Sending from a controlled SIM gives recipients a real mobile number to reply to.
Pro: API, webhooks and spreadsheet campaigns cover both integrated workflows and batch outreach.
Pro: Multi-device routing and failover can reduce reliance on one phone for plans with multiple devices.
Con: Customers must provide and maintain phones, SIMs, connectivity and carrier credit, with carrier rules still applying.
Con: The free allowance is lifetime-limited to 300 SMS and demo messages carry a service footer.
Con: SOC 2 certification is not complete, which may matter to organizations with formal assurance requirements.

Alternatives

SMS Gateway Software is the broader category directory for comparing gateway options.

Choose Textmagic if you want a paid service with a free trial and Android, iOS, API and web platforms; its listed Essential rate is 0.05 USD per month, billed 100% prepaid, with destination-dependent rates and 160 plain-text characters per SMS part.

Clickatell SMS API is another paid API-and-web option, with a free trial and pay-as-you-go outgoing messages whose prices vary by destination and message type.

Consider Ozeki SMS Gateway if you need a paid gateway spanning Android, API, Linux, self-hosted, web and Windows; its 5 MPM license is a one-time 1490.00 EUR for one service-provider connection and 10 users.

simhook offers a free plan capped at 30 messages a day, 500 a month, one phone and 25 recipients per send, or a free self-hosted option with no limits; it may fit readers prioritizing those caps or self-hosting.

Telerivet has a free tier of 50 messages per day, 50 stored contacts and two automated services, which may be a better fit for a smaller capped workflow.

Messente offers a paid API and web platform with a free plan, plus SMS, WhatsApp and Viber access, dashboard and API access, basic support and onboarding, and unlimited accounts.

NowSMS is a paid alternative with a one-time 370.00 GBP Modem Edition license based on modem count and support for multiple GSM modems or Android phones.

OpenVox SMS Gateway is a freemium API, Linux, self-hosted and web option with a free version for essential starting features.

Verdict

Android SMS Gateway is a strong fit for developers and teams that want to send through SIMs they control, especially when API access, two-way messaging and multi-device routing matter. Its real-number routing is the central reason to choose it. Look elsewhere if you need the provider to supply the messaging infrastructure, or if formal SOC 2 assurance is a requirement.
