Overview

SteelSeries Moments is a free Windows application for capturing and shaping gameplay clips. It is best suited to players who want a straightforward route from recording a highlight to sharing it, rather than a broader production suite.

Key features

Capture can start from a custom hotkey, or AI clipping can automatically save event markers in supported games. Fortnite, Counter Strike 2, League of Legends, and Street Fighter 6 are identified as supported titles; players of other games should not count on automatic highlights. Multi-mode recording and GPU encoding provide capture options, while adaptive bitrate assigns more data to complex frames and less to simpler ones.

Moments includes practical tools for preparing clips: trim the start and end, preserve the original by saving the edit as a new file at full video and audio quality, and combine selected clips into montages. Multi-track audio lets users capture and edit sources independently. Clip export, renaming, deletion, filtering, and favorites help keep a growing collection manageable.

Clips can be uploaded to YouTube, Discord, Reddit, and Twitter (X). Users can set capture intervals and choose where clips are saved, useful controls for managing footage and disk space. These features make Moments a strong fit for highlight workflows, but the focus is on clips and montages rather than a general-purpose video editor.

Pricing

Moments is available as a free download with a free plan. It provides the capture, editing, and sharing workflow without a software charge, making it an accessible option for players who do not want a subscription. There is no paid tier to weigh against those features.

Platforms

Moments runs on Windows 10 (RS5+) and newer. The stated minimums are 8GB RAM, 2GB video RAM, 500MB of HDD space, an Intel Core i5-2xxx or newer or AMD FX-4xxx or newer processor, and an NVIDIA GeForce 960+, AMD Radeon HD 7870+, or Intel HD 4000+ GPU. That makes checking an older or lower-spec PC worthwhile before choosing it.

Who it's for

Choose Moments if you play on Windows and want recording, clip organization, basic editing, and sharing in one free application. Its automatic highlight feature is especially relevant to players of the supported games. It is a weaker match for people who need macOS or Linux support, or whose main priority is extensive video production.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free access combines hotkey capture, supported-game AI clipping, trimming, montages, and sharing, so basic highlight preparation does not require a separate paid editor.
Pros: Non-destructive trimming and independently editable audio tracks offer more control than simply saving a raw recording.
Pros: Capture intervals and save-location controls help users manage when footage is captured and where it goes.
Cons: Windows-only support rules it out for players who need a cross-platform capture tool.
Cons: AI clipping applies to supported games, so players of other titles may need to rely on the hotkey workflow.
Cons: The stated RAM, video RAM, and GPU requirements may exclude older or lower-spec PCs.

Alternatives

OBS Studio is the better fit for someone who wants free capture software across Windows, macOS, and Linux; its free plan has no watermarks or usage limitations and permits commercial use.

Medal suits players who need Android or iOS support alongside Windows. Its Premium plan costs 9.99 USD per month and adds removable watermarks, auto-generated subtitles, full original-quality uploads, and unlimited cloud storage.

Outplayed is another freemium Windows option, with Core providing three months of Outplayed.tv hosting and Premium offering unlimited hosting, ad removal, layout customization, and enhanced fullscreen mode.

NVIDIA ShadowPlay is a free Windows alternative for users with a supported GPU and Windows 10 or 11; its NVIDIA App plan requires GeForce driver 551.52 or later.

Streamlabs Highlighter is a free alternative built into Streamlabs Desktop, with automated gameplay highlight detection, clip editing, and export.

Action! is a paid Windows option with a free trial and one-time licenses for home or commercial use.

Razer Game Clips is another free Windows option, with cloud storage at no extra cost; it requires Razer Cortex and a Razer ID.

Verdict

SteelSeries Moments is a good choice for Windows players who want free gameplay capture, useful clip editing, and direct sharing in one application. Its clearest advantages are the all-in-one highlight workflow and non-destructive editing; look elsewhere if you need another operating system or depend on automatic clipping for games outside its supported set.
