Overview

AppCheck pairs CARB, a context-aware ransomware behavior detection engine, with Shelter, which temporarily backs up protected files for restoration if they are damaged. That gives it a practical second line of defense: detection aims to block an attack, while Shelter may help recover affected files. CheckMAL says CARB detects more than 3,000 new or variant ransomware attacks, but that claim is not a guarantee against every threat.

The product is compatible with common antivirus software and can back up to local disks or network drives, so it can complement an existing security setup. The free license is for individual users only; Pro is offered for personal or corporate use.

Key features

Context-aware detection: CARB focuses on ransomware behavior, including new and variant attacks. That is a relevant strength for users seeking ransomware-specific detection rather than another general-purpose security suite.
Temporary file backup: Shelter keeps temporary backups of protected files and can restore them if they are damaged. It adds recovery potential, though the described feature is not a replacement for a separate backup strategy.
Pro detection and shared-drive protection: Pro adds ghost and smart detection, plus protection for network drives and SMB shared folders. Those additions make it more suitable than the free edition for users whose work depends on shared files.
Scheduled backup: Pro can schedule backups to external disks or NAS. This is useful for users who want regular copies beyond Shelter’s temporary recovery layer.
Premium support: Pro includes technical support by phone and remote support, a practical advantage for organizations that may need assistance with deployment or incidents.

CheckMAL says AppCheck Pro v3.0 achieved GS certification level 1 in 2023 and received anti-ransomware security function confirmation in 2024. These credentials provide a concrete security qualification, but do not change the need to choose a plan that matches the devices and storage you need protected.

Pricing

The free AppCheck license is free and is restricted to individual users. It is a sensible way for an individual to use the core product without a subscription, but it gives up Pro’s ghost and smart detection, network-drive and SMB shared-folder protection, scheduled backup, and premium technical support.

Paid desktop licenses are priced by device count and term:

AppCheck Pro — 1 PC / 1Year: 24.99 USD per year, billed 1 year for 1 PC.
AppCheck Pro — 3 PC / 1Year: 34.99 USD per year, billed 1 year for 3 PCs.
AppCheck Pro — 5 PC / 1Year: 49.99 USD per year, billed 1 year for 5 PCs.
AppCheck Pro — 1 PC / 2Year: 39.99 USD per year, billed 2 years for 1 PC.
AppCheck Pro — 3 PC / 2Year: 59.99 USD per year, billed 2 years for 3 PCs.
AppCheck Pro — 5 PC / 2Year: 89.99 USD per year, billed 2 years for 5 PCs.

The one-year bundles scale from a single device to five, while two-year terms suit buyers willing to commit longer; they are still capped at five PCs per listed license. A 15-day trial is offered for AppCheck Pro for Windows Server.

Platforms

AppCheck and AppCheck Pro support Windows 7 SP1, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11 in 32-bit and 64-bit editions. AppCheck Pro for Linux Server supports CentOS 6 or later, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 or later, Rocky 8 or later, and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS through 24.04 LTS. Windows Server Pro has a 15-day trial. This division makes the product more compelling for Windows desktops and supported Linux servers than for mixed environments requiring protection across other desktop systems.

Who it's for

Choose free AppCheck if you are an individual Windows user who wants ransomware-focused detection and file recovery without paying. Pro is the stronger fit for households or small organizations protecting multiple Windows PCs, or for server administrators using one of its supported Linux distributions. Its shared-folder controls, scheduled backup, and support are the most relevant upgrades for business use. Look elsewhere if you need coverage for macOS, mobile devices, or a broader suite of security tools.

Pros and cons

Pro: Detection and temporary file recovery address both threat blocking and post-attack restoration.
Pro: Pro’s network-drive, SMB-folder, and external-disk or NAS backup options suit users with shared or centralized files.
Pro: The free license gives individual users a no-cost entry point.
Con: The free license is limited to individual users, so it is not a no-cost option for a business.
Con: Listed Pro PC bundles stop at five computers, which may not suit larger deployments.
Con: The desktop platform support is Windows-only; Linux support is for Pro Server editions on specified distributions.

Verdict

AppCheck is a sound fit for individuals and smaller organizations that want ransomware behavior detection paired with a recovery layer, especially when Pro’s shared-drive safeguards or scheduled backups matter. Its free individual license lowers the barrier to trying that approach, while the five-PC ceiling on listed desktop bundles and Windows-focused desktop support make larger or more diverse environments a reason to look elsewhere.
