Overview

Atlas brings unit and lesson planning, assessment, and reporting into one school-oriented system. Schools can set their own unit-planner templates and guidance, while teachers connect lessons to unit standards, attach resources, and send plans to Google Classroom. Approval workflows and version history can support consistent review and shared curriculum ownership; schools that do not need coordinated processes may find less reason to adopt a dedicated platform.

Atlas began as a curriculum tool for a Portland independent school in 1999. Rubicon joined Faria Education Group in 2018.

Key features

Adaptable planning: Custom templates let schools define the requirements and examples staff should follow, rather than imposing one fixed planning format. Lesson alignment to unit standards helps teachers connect day-to-day work to broader curriculum plans.
Curriculum reporting: AI-powered reports surface alignment gaps, coverage patterns, and opportunities to improve coherence. This is valuable for coordinators reviewing curriculum across courses, though the reports are most useful when a school has clear goals for acting on those findings.
Standards library: Schools can choose from almost 3 million standards, request additions, or create and customize their own. That range can accommodate varied curricula without limiting schools to a single framework.
Connections and governance: Sign-in options include Google, Office 365, Clever, and school ADFS. Integrations include ManageBac, Google Classroom, LTI platforms such as Canvas and Schoology, and ClassLink. Atlas also supports approval workflows, version history, all curriculum levels, LMS integrations, and PDF exports.
Security and privacy: Faria says its learning platform is ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified and encrypts data in transit and at rest. It also says it complies with GDPR and hosts data in locations including Canada, China, and the EU.

Pricing

The main Atlas platform uses custom pricing, so schools need to contact sales to establish the cost for their needs. Standard support comes with every license.

Standards: Free. This provides the Atlas standards library, with the ability for schools to add or customize standards. It is a useful no-cost option for standards access, not a substitute for the broader planning and reporting platform.
Public Atlas Site: 500.00 USD per year, billed as an annual fee. It provides a customized public page for sharing selected curriculum, suiting schools that want to publish chosen materials without making all curriculum public.
Premium Support: 650.00 USD per year, billed annually. It adds priority email response, custom resources and videos, annual user and course support, unit template modifications, and virtual technical training. Schools needing that higher-touch assistance should compare this with the standard support included in a license.

Other services carry separate charges: project work is $80 per hour with a $320 minimum, virtual training is $200 per training, and onsite training is $2,000 per day plus travel costs. These costs can matter for schools that expect implementation or staff training beyond the included support.

Platforms

Atlas runs on the web. Its PDF export and listed LMS integrations support sharing and connection to school workflows, but the platform listing is web-only.

Who it's for

Atlas is aimed at school coordinators, teachers, students, and parents across public, independent, and international schools. It is a stronger fit for organizations that need shared planning structures, standards alignment, and curriculum-level reporting than for an individual teacher seeking a small standalone planning tool.

Pros and cons

Pros: Schools can shape unit templates around local requirements and examples, supporting a consistent process without a fixed format.
Pros: A library of almost 3 million standards, plus the ability to add or customize standards, gives schools flexibility across curricula.
Pros: Reporting, approval workflows, version history, and integrations address coordination as well as lesson creation.
Cons: Custom pricing for the main platform makes direct budget comparison difficult before contacting sales.
Cons: Trial duration is unstated, and project work and training can add meaningful costs beyond the license.
Cons: Atlas is web-only, which may not suit schools looking for dedicated mobile applications.

Alternatives

OpenCurriculum is worth considering for teachers or small teams who want a free starting point: its free Teacher plan allows one user, 10 courses, and 200 MB of storage, while the free Team plan allows up to 10 users, 50 courses, and 1.5 GB.

mapEDU is another web-based, freemium alternative with a free trial; contact it to compare the paid subscription options with Atlas.

Toddle may suit schools seeking a planning platform with Android and iOS apps as well as web access; its Planning Pro targets curriculum planning, while Ultimate is AI-enabled.

Outcomap is a lighter option for users who want a free curriculum-mapping tool: its free plan allows one map, five AI map generations and edits per month, and PDFs up to five pages.

ExamSoft, Modern Campus CMS, CourseLoop, and Ilios are also alternatives to consider.

Verdict

Atlas is a strong choice for schools that need coordinated unit and lesson planning, standards management, and curriculum-wide reporting in one platform. Its adaptable planning and broad standards support are the clearest reasons to choose it. Schools should look elsewhere if they need transparent core pricing, a stated trial period, or a platform beyond the web; those weighing Atlas should also account for separately priced training and project services.
