Overview

Atlas is a database schema and migration tool for teams that want declarative, versioned workflows rather than changes managed only through handwritten scripts. It is strongest for teams that need to compare intended schemas with live databases and control how migrations reach production.

Its mix of schema planning, migration safeguards, and CI/CD integrations makes it a capable choice for engineering teams, but the cost of Pro extends beyond its per-developer price: pipeline and database usage are charged separately.

Key features

Schema comparison and migration control

Atlas compares a database with a desired schema written in HCL, SQL, or an ORM format, then generates and can execute a migration plan. That declarative approach is useful when teams want changes to follow a defined target, while schema diffing and rollback support give them tools to manage and reverse changes. Its mixed migration format suits teams working across more than one schema representation.

Safety checks and automation

Migration linting, validation, safety checks, and schema and migration testing help teams catch problems before applying changes. CI/CD automation and integrations for Kubernetes, Terraform, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, CircleCI, Bitbucket Pipelines, and Azure DevOps provide several routes into existing delivery workflows. Drift detection can also flag divergence between the expected schema and database state.

Database coverage and deployment

The open version supports PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite, TiDB, and LibSQL. Pro adds drivers including SQL Server, Oracle, Snowflake, and Databricks, which makes the paid tier more relevant to organizations with a broader database estate. Atlas is available through an API and on Linux and macOS, with Windows and self-hosted options also supported.

Open core and operational assurances

Ariga makes Atlas’s core engine available under the Apache 2.0 license and reserves advanced features for proprietary versions. Ariga says it has undergone SOC 2 Type II audits since 2022 and that Atlas handles database metadata rather than customer records. Atlas Cloud is described as providing multi-availability-zone replication, automated failover, daily encrypted backups, and 99.9% uptime; those cloud assurances may matter to teams assessing operational resilience.

Pricing

Atlas Starter

Atlas Starter is free to use, with limited inspection and diffing and support for MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, and SQLite. It is a practical way to begin with core schema workflows, but its restricted database coverage and inspection capabilities may constrain teams that need broader estate support or advanced controls. Starter support is through GitHub and Discord.

Atlas Pro (Team)

Atlas Pro (Team) costs $9 per developer, per month, plus usage-based pricing for CI/CD pipelines and databases. It includes 50 CLI seats, 90-day history retention, and up to 500 root objects in Atlas Registry; nested objects such as columns, indexes, foreign keys, and comments do not count toward that cap. CI/CD projects cost $59/month and include 2 target databases, with additional target databases at $39/month each. The per-developer price is only part of the budget, so teams should estimate pipeline and database usage before adopting Pro. Business-hours support is included.

New users can try Pro free for 30 days. A license is required to continue using Atlas Pro after the trial ends.

Atlas Schema Monitoring

Atlas Schema Monitoring costs $39/month per monitored database. It includes a schema changelog, ERD and schema documentation, column-level data lineage, Security Graph and CVE scanning, and drift detection with alerts. It is a focused option for teams that need ongoing visibility into monitored databases, but the per-database charge scales with the number of databases covered.

Atlas Enterprise

Atlas Enterprise uses custom pricing and starts from 20 databases. It adds customizable plans, Enterprise SSO, premium support with a custom SLA, air-gapped network deployment, and offline CI/CD licenses. Those deployment and support options suit larger or tightly controlled environments; the 20-database starting point makes it a poor fit for smaller estates.

Platforms

Atlas supports API access, Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosted deployment. That combination gives teams a choice between using a managed service and keeping deployment under their own control.

Who it's for

Atlas is aimed at teams managing schema change across development and operations, from startups to large enterprises. Its migration checks and pipeline integrations are relevant to teams with established delivery processes; Pro’s expanded driver support is more useful when the database estate includes systems beyond the open version’s six supported databases. The maker lists use across financial services, healthcare, cybersecurity, e-commerce, manufacturing, education, government, and cloud vendors. Ariga was founded by the creators of the Ent entity framework.

Pros and cons

Pros

One workflow from desired schema to migration: comparison, plan generation, and execution connect schema intent with database changes.
Built-in migration safeguards: linting, validation, safety checks, and testing help teams review changes before applying them.
Multiple adoption paths: an Apache 2.0 core, free Starter tier, Pro trial, and self-hosted option let teams choose how to begin and deploy.
Broader paid-tier coverage: Pro adds drivers such as SQL Server, Oracle, Snowflake, and Databricks beyond the open version’s supported databases.

Cons

Pro has variable costs: the $9 per-developer monthly charge is supplemented by CI/CD and database usage fees.
Starter is constrained: limited inspection and diffing and a shorter database list may not cover teams with wider schema-management needs.
Registry capacity is capped: Pro allows up to 500 root objects, although nested schema elements are excluded from the count.
Monitoring cost follows database count: at $39/month per monitored database, the dedicated monitoring plan can become costly across a large estate.

Alternatives

For teams comparing options, see Database Migration Tools, Database Testing Tools, and Data Lineage Tools.

Bytebase Enterprise is worth considering when a free Community tier with up to 20 users and 10 database instances, or a paid per-user Pro plan, better matches the team’s seat and instance needs.
Skeema is an alternative for teams looking for a freemium schema tool with a free Community tier that includes tables, stored procedures and functions, and 18 linter checks.
Redgate SQL Provision is a different option for teams that want provisioning or masking capacity organized by production data-volume tiers, from 1TB through 100TB.
FluentMigrator may suit teams seeking a free, Apache-2.0 licensed framework distributed through NuGet, with provider packages selected separately.
Alembic is a free alternative distributed under the MIT license.
SchemaHero is another free option.
sqldef is another free option.
Liquibase is worth comparing if a Starter plan capped at five applications and one database type fits the requirement.

Verdict

Atlas is a strong fit for engineering teams that want declarative schema management tied to migration validation and delivery automation, particularly when Pro’s broader database support is needed. Its main reason to choose is the connected workflow from schema comparison through migration safeguards; its main reason to look elsewhere is the combination of Starter’s limits and Pro’s usage-based charges on top of the per-developer fee.
