Overview

Audacity has been developed since 2000 and is free for everyone. Its source code is available to inspect or modify under the GNU GPL, a useful distinction for people who value open-source software. The project is maintained by a small remote team with community support.

For editing existing recordings, Audacity combines multitrack editing with noise reduction, plugin support and spectrogram analysis. Those capabilities make it more than a basic file trimmer, though the absence of MIDI sequencing rules it out for workflows that depend on composing or arranging MIDI parts.

Key features

Editing and analysis

Multitrack editing supports work across several audio tracks, while noise reduction can help address unwanted sound in recordings. Spectrogram view offers a visual way to examine and analyze audio clips. Support for 16-bit, 24-bit and 32-bit audio, plus high-quality resampling and dithering, gives users options for working with different audio quality requirements.

Audacity handles popular formats including MP3, M4A, AIFF, FLAC and WAV. Video synchronization is also supported, which is relevant when audio needs to align with video material. These features make it a flexible desktop editor, but it remains an audio-focused tool rather than a MIDI sequencing environment.

Plugins and collaboration

Third-party plugins are supported in VST3, Nyquist, LV2 and Audio Unit formats. That lets users extend the editor with compatible processing tools rather than being limited to its built-in capabilities. Cloud collaboration is also supported, although the scope of that capability is not established here; users should not treat it as a substitute for a particular team workflow without confirming it meets their needs.

Pricing

Audacity is free for everyone, with no subscription required. The Free and Audacity Free plans are each free; the practical offer is a free, open-source desktop audio editor, not a lower tier with paid features described separately. There are no plan seat counts, quotas, trial periods or renewal terms to weigh. This is an especially straightforward fit for individuals and teams seeking desktop editing without recurring software charges.

Platforms

The supported desktop systems are Windows, macOS and Linux. Audacity has no mobile app for iOS or Android, so it is not suitable for people who need to record or edit on a phone or tablet. Buyers should also avoid unofficial mobile apps when seeking Audacity itself; refunds may apply to cloud storage purchases or unofficial mobile app purchases.

Who it's for

Audacity is a strong fit for podcasters, musicians and other creators editing recorded audio on a desktop, particularly those who want multitrack editing, noise reduction, format flexibility and plugin support without paying for a subscription. Its open-source license may also appeal to users who want to inspect or modify the software.

Look elsewhere if MIDI sequencing is central to your work, or if your editing needs are mobile-first. Support comes through the manual, forum and developer Discord, giving users several community-oriented routes for help.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free for everyone and open source, with no subscription required; a compelling option for budget-conscious desktop users.
Pros: Multitrack editing, noise reduction, spectrogram analysis and broad audio-format support cover varied recorded-audio tasks.
Pros: VST3, Nyquist, LV2 and Audio Unit support gives users ways to add compatible third-party tools.
Cons: No iOS or Android version, so mobile editors need another product.
Cons: No MIDI sequencing, making Audacity a poor match for workflows built around MIDI composition or arrangement.

Alternatives

For a wider set of choices, browse Audio Editing Software or, for game-focused work, Game Audio Editors.

Pro Tools is worth considering for casual creators who want its free Intro plan, which includes up to eight audio, instrument and MIDI tracks. WavePad may suit users who want an editor with Android and iOS versions; its listed Master's Edition Annual Plan is 99.00 USD per year and includes an SFX Library and full VST support. Ocenaudio is another free downloadable desktop audio editor.

Soundop offers paid plans and a free trial for Windows users. DSP-Quattro is a macOS alternative with a free trial and no free plan. Nuendo is a paid option for macOS and Windows users, with a free trial and no free plan. SpectraLayers Pro is another paid macOS and Windows alternative with a free trial and no free plan. PhotoDirector is a freemium macOS and Windows option.

Verdict

Choose Audacity if you want a no-cost, open-source desktop editor with substantial tools for recorded audio and plugin extensibility. Its main advantages are the breadth of editing and analysis features and the lack of subscription fees. Choose something else if you need MIDI sequencing or a genuine iOS or Android app.
