Overview

GEM-CAR is shop-management software for auto repair businesses, with desktop and cloud editions. It is best suited to shops that want work orders, inventory, inspections and billing under one roof; its main trade-off is a monthly price that climbs with added users and storage.

V14 is installed locally and stores data on the shop’s system, so it does not depend on an internet connection. GEM-CAR Cloud (V16) instead gives internet-connected devices real-time access to work orders, schedules, invoices and inventory. That makes the choice partly operational: a shop prioritizing offline local storage may prefer V14, while teams needing access across devices will want the cloud edition.

Founded in 2001 and headquartered in Montreal, GEM-CAR also serves heavy-duty truck centers, boat stores, bicycle repair workshops, tire shops and transmission repair centers.

Key features

Shop workflow

The cloud product brings point of sale, work orders, digital inspections, estimate approvals, parts inventory, technician time tracking and vehicle history into the same workflow. Online scheduling, VIN decoding and more than 100 reports extend that coverage. For shops trying to coordinate service from intake through records and invoicing, this breadth is a clear advantage over a collection of disconnected tools.

Supplier and vehicle tools

V16 lists automatic VIN reading, supplier-invoice analysis, 140 new GEM-LINK supplier connections and an automated pricing matrix. It also claims request processing up to three times faster. These tools are aimed at reducing manual handling of vehicle and supplier information, though the performance claim should not be confused with a guarantee for every shop’s setup.

Access and safeguards

The platform supports PCs, Macs, iOS and Android devices when connected to the internet. User-profile permissions, controls over functions and add-ons, and a change history help shops manage access and accountability. GEM-CAR’s privacy policy says personal information is transmitted using TLS, stored securely and accessible only to employees; it states compliance with PIPEDA and an aim to comply with GDPR and CCPA.

Integrations listed in the product brochure include Mitchell, ALLDATA, Identifix, Shopify, WooCommerce, Mailchimp, Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo. Support options include a Help Center, ticket submission, GEM-ACADEMY training, remote support and a system-status page.

Pricing

GEM-CAR is paid software, with three monthly plans and a 30-day cloud trial that requires no credit card. The trial is a useful way to assess the connected workflow before committing, but there is no free plan for continued use.

Plan	Price	Included users	Storage	Best fit
I Standard	149.00 USD per month	2	100 GB	Small shops with a compact team
II Premium	299.00 USD per month	3	200 GB	Shops needing one additional seat and more storage
III Elite	379.00 USD per month	5	200 GB	Teams that need up to five included users

Standard is the least expensive entry point, but its two included users and 100 GB make it a tighter fit for larger teams or growing records. Premium doubles the storage and adds one seat for 150.00 USD more per month than Standard. Elite adds two seats over Premium without increasing storage, so its extra cost makes sense chiefly when the shop needs those seats. Compare the included capacity with your staff and data needs before choosing.

Platforms

GEM-CAR supports Android, iOS, macOS, web and Windows. Cloud access requires an internet connection; the locally installed V14 desktop edition is the option for shops that need local data storage without internet dependency.

Who it's for

GEM-CAR is primarily for auto repair shops that need a broad set of operational tools and can justify a paid monthly system. Its listed support for heavy-duty truck, boat, bicycle, tire and transmission repair businesses makes it relevant beyond general automotive service. Smaller teams should weigh the two-user Standard plan carefully; shops needing a free ongoing option should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad workflow coverage: work orders, inspections, estimate approvals, inventory, time tracking and vehicle history support the main service-shop workflow.
Choice of deployment: V14 works locally without internet, while Cloud gives connected access across device types.
Supplier and reporting tools: GEM-LINK connections, the pricing matrix, VIN tools and more than 100 reports can reduce scattered administrative work.
Access controls and support channels: permissions, change history, training and remote support address operational oversight as well as product assistance.

Cons

Meaningful monthly commitment: the entry plan costs 149.00 USD per month, and there is no free plan.
Seat limits shape the upgrade decision: Standard includes two users, Premium three and Elite five; teams needing more included users must consider the higher monthly tiers.
Cloud access depends on connectivity: shops wanting access from connected devices need internet, unlike the local V14 edition.

Alternatives

Automotive Repair Software is a useful starting point for comparing options across the category.

ARI is worth considering for shops prioritizing a free plan or a lower-cost entry: ARI Pro (monthly) is 39.99 USD per month and includes invoicing, inspections, inventory, accounting, appointments, reminders and time tracking.
Workshop Software may suit teams looking for full job and vehicle management, booking management and data import/export in its Silver plan, priced at 99.00 AUD per year.
GetAFix offers custom pricing based on branches, users and modules; its Starter plan covers up to five users and one location.
LANKAR is an option for a shop seeking a one-user license at 99.00 USD per month, with live online training and phone technical support.
Pitlane is an alternative with one 200.00 USD per month plan that includes unlimited customers, vehicles and user seats.
Mitchell 1 Manager SE is another option for independent repair shops working on autos and light-duty trucks.
ShopKey Shop Management is another paid shop-management option.
CCC ONE Repair Workflow is another paid option with mobile and web platforms.

Verdict

GEM-CAR is a strong fit for repair businesses that want operational breadth, supplier connections and a choice between local desktop storage and real-time cloud access. The cloud trial gives shops a low-risk way to assess fit, but the recurring cost and included-user limits deserve close attention. Choose it when those workflow capabilities justify the monthly spend; look elsewhere if a free plan, lower entry price or more included seats is the priority.
