Overview

Built on the IBM Design Language, Carbon brings foundations, components, patterns, code, and guidance into one system. Commercial use is permitted, and the open-source plan costs nothing, making it a practical choice for organizations that want a shared design foundation without a licensing charge. Its scope spans areas such as data and AI, security, IT automation, and finance and operations; teams seeking only a small set of UI components may find the wider ecosystem more than they need.

Key features

Design assets and implementation

Carbon Core joins components, patterns, guidance, and code. Components address specific interface problems and are designed to work together, while patterns combine components with design considerations for user needs. Some patterns include example code, but teams should not expect implementation code for every scenario: patterns can be realized in many ways, so project-specific work may be necessary.

Design kits are maintained in Figma and receive library updates automatically. For implementation, Carbon for Products adds product-focused components, styling, and guidance, with components built in React. The distinction matters: the core system offers breadth, but teams choosing the product layer should be comfortable with its React basis. Carbon also provides web components as ES modules or through a CDN, with support for frameworks including Angular and Ember.

Extensions, charts, and tooling

Carbon for AI contributes guidelines, style elements, tokens, and reusable pieces such as an AI label and chat framework. Carbon Charts covers visualizations from familiar bar and line charts to alluvial diagrams and geospatial overlays, with an emphasis on accurate, accessible data presentation. Additional integrations include Carbon for Cloud, AEM, IBMer Experience, Salesforce, and React Native, giving teams routes to extend the system for different environments.

GitHub repositories, Storybooks, tutorials, Carbon Devtools, a color-contrast checker, and Carbon UI Builder support design and development work. UI Builder can export assembled pages as presentation images, live demo apps, or production-quality frontend code. Carbon's stable-component quality bar includes at least 80% unit-test coverage and accessibility checks with the IBM Equal Access Accessibility Checker, a useful assurance for teams adopting shared components.

Accessibility

Components follow the IBM Accessibility Checklist, based on WCAG AA, Section 508, and European standards. This gives teams a defined accessibility foundation, although using Carbon does not remove the need to consider accessibility in their own implementations, particularly where patterns are adapted.

Pricing

Open-source design system: free. The plan is open source for anyone to use and contribute, with no paid tiers stated. Commercial-use licensing and the free price make Carbon suitable for individual projects as well as organizations standardizing product work; there are no paid-plan trade-offs or seat and quota limits stated.

Platforms

Carbon is available on web. Its design kits are maintained in Figma, and its implementation options include React components and web components consumable through an ES module or CDN.

Who it's for

Carbon fits design and engineering teams that need reusable foundations across multiple products or enterprise domains, especially where accessibility guidance, charts, AI interface elements, and developer resources all matter. It is less suitable when a team needs ready-made code for every workflow or wants product components without a React implementation layer; those teams should assess the relevant extension and plan for adaptation.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free, open-source commercial use lets teams adopt a shared system without licensing fees.
Pro: Design kits, code, patterns, guidance, and extensions cover both design and implementation needs.
Pro: Accessibility practices are built into component guidance and stable-component checks.
Con: Patterns do not include code for every scenario, leaving teams to implement variations themselves.
Con: Carbon for Products is built with React, which may not fit teams standardizing on another frontend approach.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, browse Design System Software or UI Kit Libraries. Figma Wireframe Kit is a free option for teams focused on Figma products, drafts, UI kits, and templates. Choose Untitled UI for its free open-source React components and CLI installation, or its free single-user Figma kit. Material Design for Bootstrap offers a free MIT-licensed core for personal and commercial use, with a paid Team plan for additional resources. Shadcn Studio Figma UI Kit has a free community edition and a one-time $99.00 USD Basic plan for a single user with unlimited projects. Ant Design Icons is a free MIT-licensed icon package for Vanilla, React, React Native, Angular, and Vue. Clarity Design System is another free, open-source design system. Flowbite Figma Design System has a free community edition. Material 3 Design Kit is a free Figma design kit.

Verdict

Carbon is a strong choice for teams that want an open-source, commercially usable system spanning design assets, implementation guidance, accessibility, and product extensions. Its main advantage is the breadth available at no charge; look elsewhere if your stack does not suit the React-based product layer or your workflows depend on implementation-ready pattern code for every case.
