Overview

The suite brings burning, copying, image creation, and integrity checks together with audio and video workflows. It communicates with optical drives through native SCSI/MMC commands, rather than relying on separate disc-operation tools. The .NET 8 and Avalonia UI application runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows, but its breadth does not make it a lightweight choice for every DVD project: drive-dependent tasks require suitable hardware and permissions, and video authoring requires FFmpeg.

Key features

Disc images: It reads and creates ISO, BIN/CUE, CCD/IMG/SUB, NRG, MDF/MDS, and CDI images. That variety suits users maintaining collections in different formats; building images from files and folders also works without a physical drive.
Audio: Users can create CDs with CD-TEXT, rip tracks to WAV or BIN/CUE, and import M3U, PLS, WPL, and ASX playlists. This makes it relevant to audio-disc work as well as general burning, though the feature set is more specialized than a basic data-disc utility.
Video: Support covers DVD-Video, Blu-ray BDMV and BDAV, Blu-ray 3D, and FFmpeg-based transcoding. FFmpeg is an optional runtime dependency, but it is required for video authoring features, so that workflow has an additional setup requirement.
Verification: Integrity checks can use CRC32, MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, or SHA-512. The choice of several checksum algorithms is useful when checking discs against different verification needs.
Gaming and encryption: Presets cover PlayStation, Nintendo, Sega, Xbox, and retro platforms; Nintendo DS/3DS support is verification-only. Images can be password-protected with AES-256-CBC, and PS3 disc decryption supports IRD, dkey, or hex keys. These are targeted capabilities for gaming-media collections, not a reason to choose the suite for ordinary DVD authoring.

Pricing

The Free plan is free and is a free, open-source disc-burning application released under the BSD 2-Clause License. It is the clear fit for individuals or teams who want the full stated feature set without a purchase price. There are no paid tiers or trial period to weigh; the practical costs are the required drive and permissions for physical-disc work, plus FFmpeg for video authoring.

Platforms

Open Burning Suite runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. Burning, reading, and verification require a physical optical drive. Direct drive access requires Administrator privileges on Windows, root or suitable device permissions on Linux, and hardware access permissions on macOS. Image building from files and folders does not need a drive, making that part of the workflow useful even on systems without optical hardware.

Who it's for

This is a strong fit for people who still handle physical media and need one application for multiple image formats, audio CDs, Blu-ray authoring, checksums, or gaming-oriented disc tasks. It is less suitable for someone who only needs straightforward DVD authoring, or who cannot obtain the required drive access on their system. Pros and cons

Pro: Broad image-format coverage, audio features, video support, and verification tools bring several distinct optical-media workflows into one application.
Pro: Image creation from files and folders does not depend on a physical drive, so not every task is blocked by missing optical hardware.
Pro: The free BSD-licensed application runs across Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Con: Burning, reading, and verification require a physical optical drive, and direct drive operations also require suitable system permissions.
Con: Video authoring depends on FFmpeg, adding a separate runtime requirement for that part of the suite.
Con: Nintendo DS/3DS support is limited to verification, so those users should not expect the gaming presets to cover other operations for those systems.

Verdict

Choose Open Burning Suite if you need a free, cross-platform tool that handles more than DVD authoring, particularly varied disc images, audio, Blu-ray, or verification. Its breadth is the main reason to pick it; look elsewhere if you only need a simple DVD-authoring workflow or cannot meet its drive-access requirements for physical media.
