Overview

Sumo Logic is a freemium product from a company founded in 2010 and headquartered in Redwood City, California. It runs in the cloud and is accessed on the web, so teams looking for a hosted service can use it without choosing a self-managed deployment. That focus is also a constraint: organizations that require self-hosting or another deployment option should look elsewhere.

Key features

Structured log parsing: Helps teams turn structured logs into material they can analyze, rather than treating logs only as records to store.
Log pipelines: Gives teams a way to process log data as it moves through the service, a useful part of a workflow that needs more than collection alone.
Live log tailing: Supports following incoming logs as they arrive, which is more useful for watching current activity than relying only on retained data.
Archive export: Provides a path for taking log archives out of the service, useful when teams need to retain or use data elsewhere.

These capabilities span processing, active monitoring, and export. The value depends on whether a team can work within the cloud deployment and the plan's usage and retention limits.

Pricing

The pricing model is freemium, with a free plan, a 30-day trial, and paid plans. The Free plan is free and includes 20 daily credits for logs, metrics, and traces, seven-day log retention, and up to three users. It is a practical starting point for a small team evaluating a bounded workload, but the credit allowance, short retention, and user cap can make it unsuitable as a permanent home for growing or longer-lived log data.

The Trial plan also is free, but is limited to 30 days. It allows 1 GB per day, 30-day retention, and up to 20 users. Compared with Free, that gives a larger team more room to assess the service and longer retention during evaluation; the fixed 30-day term means it is not an ongoing free tier.

Essentials is a paid, credits-based subscription for log analytics and monitoring. Customers can upgrade through self-service and choose a billing cycle, but the price is custom pricing. The credit model makes usage a key consideration when estimating ongoing cost, and buyers should match expected consumption to the plan before committing.

Enterprise Suite is an enterprise plan for security teams with custom pricing through sales. It is the relevant paid route for security teams considering the product at enterprise scale, but requires a sales conversation rather than a published price comparison.

Platforms

Sumo Logic is available on the web and is cloud-deployed. That keeps the deployment choice straightforward for teams seeking hosted access, but rules it out for organizations whose requirements call for self-hosted or on-premises software.

Who it's for

Sumo Logic suits teams that need to parse and process logs, watch incoming activity, and export archives within a cloud service. Small teams can begin with the Free plan if 20 daily credits, seven-day retention, and three users are enough. Teams evaluating with more users or a need for 30-day retention can use the time-limited Trial. For ongoing analytics and monitoring, Essentials is the paid option; security teams looking at an enterprise plan should consider Enterprise Suite. It is a weaker fit for teams that need self-hosting, or buyers who cannot assess credit-based costs and custom-priced plans against their workload.

Pros and cons

Pros: The Free plan covers logs, metrics, and traces with no charge, giving small teams a way to start across these data types.
Pros: Parsing, pipelines, live tailing, and archive export cover several distinct stages of log work.
Pros: The 30-day Trial raises the allowance to 1 GB per day and supports up to 20 users, making it more suitable than Free for a broader evaluation.
Cons: Free limits teams to 20 daily credits, seven-day retention, and three users, restricting its usefulness for sustained or larger deployments.
Cons: Trial access ends after 30 days, so its higher user ceiling and 30-day retention are evaluation benefits, not a continuing free arrangement.
Cons: Essentials uses credits and has custom pricing, while Enterprise Suite requires contacting sales; neither provides a listed price for straightforward budgeting.
Cons: Cloud-only deployment leaves out organizations that require self-hosted or on-premises operation.

Alternatives

For security orchestration rather than log management, Tines is a freemium web, API, and self-hosted option with a Free edition limited to three live workflows. Tracecat is another freemium API, web, and self-hosted option; its Open Source plan is free forever and allows unlimited workflows, cases, and agents, with self-managed monthly executions.

OpenSOAR is a free, self-hosted API and web option with no feature gates or per-action billing. Rapid7 InsightConnect is a paid alternative with a 30-day free trial, though workflows in toolkits require an InsightConnect license. CrowdStrike Falcon Surface is a paid Linux, macOS, web, and Windows option with a demo-based sales path and no free plan.

eyeCloudXOAR UEBA has customer-tailored pricing, while Palo Alto Networks Cortex Cloud API Security is a paid API, Linux, and web option. Wildbox is a free alternative available across API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows platforms.

Readers comparing products by category can also browse Log Management Software, Observability Platforms, SIEM Software, IT Operations Management Software, SOAR Software, and Real User Monitoring.

Verdict

Choose Sumo Logic if your team wants hosted log, metrics, and trace workflows with parsing, pipelines, live tailing, and archive export, and can make its credit-based or custom-priced plans work. The Free plan is useful for a small, constrained start, not a substitute for checking the ongoing allowance and retention your workload needs. Look elsewhere if self-hosting is a requirement or if you need predictable, published pricing before evaluating a paid deployment.
