Overview

The marketplace brings together more than 3,500 products from over 300 providers, with more than 1,000 free data products. That range makes it a useful place to search across providers, while the free offerings provide a way to work with some data without paying a product price. There is no single subscription price for the marketplace: paid products carry provider-set terms.

Products are available as files, APIs, and data sets for Amazon Redshift, Amazon S3, and AWS Lake Formation, which is in Preview. This flexibility suits teams with established AWS pipelines, but the product format matters: buyers should choose based on how they intend to use the data, not catalog size alone.

Key features

AWS data workflows

Subscribers can export data to Amazon S3 and analyze it with Amazon Athena or Amazon Redshift, or use it with Amazon SageMaker, Amazon EMR, AWS Glue, and AWS Lake Formation. CloudWatch Events can retrieve new data-set revisions automatically to S3, reducing manual revision handling. These integrations are a practical advantage for AWS-based analytics and machine-learning work; teams built around other platforms may find less reason to choose this marketplace.

Flexible offers and publishing

Providers can publish free or paid products with subscription durations from 1 to 36 months. Private products and offers can set customized prices, durations, payment schedules, agreements, and refund terms. Providers can publish through the AWS Data Exchange console, its API, or the AWS Marketplace Catalog API. This gives sellers room to structure commercial arrangements, while buyers should review the specific offer's terms before committing.

Access and safeguards

Public data sets in the Open Data on AWS program can be found and used by people with or without an AWS account. AWS Data Exchange encrypts data in transit with SSL/TLS and at rest with server-side encryption, integrates with AWS CloudTrail for API-call auditing, and has been validated as compliant with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard. These safeguards matter to organizations managing sensitive or regulated data, though they do not remove the need to assess each provider and product.

Pricing

Free and open data products: Free. Free products are available in the catalog, which includes more than 1,000 free data products. This is the clearest option for buyers who can meet their needs from free offerings, but AWS service and data-transfer charges may still apply.

Pay-as-you-go data products: custom pricing, billed for usage during the calendar month. Providers set prices; applicable sales taxes and AWS service and data-transfer charges may apply. This model suits buyers whose usage varies, but costs depend on both the provider's rate and AWS usage.

Subscription-based data products: custom pricing, billed upfront or on a schedule, with provider-set prices and subscription durations. Applicable sales taxes and AWS service and data-transfer charges may apply. This can suit buyers seeking a defined subscription term, but terms and prices vary by product; subscriptions can run from 1 to 36 months.

Subscribers may also incur standard Amazon S3 transfer charges and charges for AWS services used to store, process, or analyze data. A free product therefore does not necessarily mean a zero-cost workflow.

Platforms

AWS Data Exchange is available through web and API access. Its supported data formats and AWS integrations make it most useful when buyers can connect the product to AWS storage and analysis services.

Who it's for

This marketplace is a strong fit for data teams, analysts, and organizations already using AWS that want to discover third-party data and bring it into AWS services. Providers may also value the ability to publish through AWS tools and offer custom private terms. Buyers looking for a fixed marketplace subscription price, or whose data work is centered outside AWS, should compare the per-product and infrastructure costs before choosing it.

Pros and cons

Pros: More than 3,500 products from over 300 providers gives buyers a broad catalog to search.
Pros: More than 1,000 free products and public-data access without an AWS account lower the barrier to finding data.
Pros: Exports, analysis integrations, and automated revision retrieval support AWS data workflows.
Pros: Private offers allow providers to customize price, duration, payment schedule, agreement, and refund terms.
Cons: Product prices are provider-set, and paid plans have custom pricing rather than one predictable marketplace price.
Cons: AWS service and data-transfer charges can add to the cost, including when the data product itself is free.
Cons: AWS-centered integrations offer less advantage to teams whose data workflows run on other platforms.
Cons: Lake Formation data sets are in Preview, so buyers seeking that format should account for its preview status.
