Overview

Transfer Family combines SFTP, FTPS, and FTP endpoints with Amazon S3 or Amazon EFS storage. It also provides browser access to S3, connectors for remote SFTP servers, and managed AS2 messaging for exchanging EDI documents. Custom identity providers can enforce authentication, authorization, and per-user controls, while the service supports thousands of concurrent users and transfers involving PCI, PII, or HIPAA-regulated data.

The service is broad rather than simple. Charges can arise from enabled protocols, transferred data, messages, workflow processing, connector calls, and web app units. That model fits variable or partner-driven workloads, but makes a fixed monthly budget harder than with a conventional subscription.

Key features

Managed protocol endpoints: SFTP, FTPS, and FTP endpoints connect clients to S3 or EFS. A server can use up to three Availability Zones without an additional multi-AZ charge, a useful resilience option for production services.
Identity and deployment controls: Custom identity providers support tailored authentication and authorization for individual users. CloudFormation templates and the Transfer Family Terraform module let infrastructure teams define and deploy resources consistently.
Automated workflows: Managed workflows automate post-upload processing through supported endpoints and integrate with AWS Step Functions for downstream processing. They require an SFTP, FTPS, or FTP endpoint, so they are not a standalone processing service.
Browser-based access: Authenticated users can reach Amazon S3 through a web file manager. One web app unit supports up to 250 unique sessions per five-minute period. Uploads and downloads through web apps do not incur web-app data charges, although S3 requests and bandwidth still do.
SFTP connectors: Connectors send files to or retrieve them from remote SFTP servers, using S3 as the source or destination. A connector call includes directory listings of up to 1,000 items, which matters when synchronizing large directories.
AS2 messaging: Managed AS2 supports EDI exchanges with trading partners. Messages up to 50 MB are included per message; larger messages are charged in 50 MB chunks.
Scale and access: Thousands of concurrent users, API access, and a maximum file size of 50 GB cover substantial operational workloads, while support for all access protocols and browser file management broadens client options.

Pricing

AWS Transfer Family has no upfront costs and uses usage-based billing. The pricing example lists an SFTP, FTPS, or FTP endpoint at 0.30 USD per month, billed at a $0.30 hourly rate in US East (N. Virginia), for a protocol-enabled server endpoint. SFTP, FTPS, or FTP data transfer is 0.04 USD per month as a usage-based charge for data uploaded and downloaded over those protocols.

Web app units cost 0.50 USD per month, billed at a $0.50 hourly rate per unit in US East (N. Virginia), with 250 unique sessions per five-minute period per unit. SFTP connector calls are 0.00 USD per month as a usage-based charge, while SFTP connector data transfer costs 0.40 USD per month for data sent or retrieved. Workflow data processing costs 0.10 USD per month for data processed by workflow steps. The AWS Transfer Family plan itself has custom pricing: charges depend on enabled protocols, data, messages, workflows, connector calls, and web app units.

This structure suits organizations that can meter predictable transfer volumes and want to pay for the capabilities they activate. It is less attractive when workloads are sporadic or when finance teams need one easily forecast subscription price. Remember that S3 requests and bandwidth remain chargeable even when web-app uploads and downloads do not.

Platforms

Transfer Family is offered on the web and exposes API access for automation and administration.

Who it's for

Choose it when AWS is already your storage and application platform, you need SFTP, FTPS, FTP, browser, connector, or AS2 access in one estate, or you must serve many users and regulated-data workflows. It is particularly suitable for IT teams that manage infrastructure as code and need custom identity integration.

Look elsewhere for a small team seeking occasional file sharing, a simple consumer cloud drive, or a predictable bundled price without operating protocol endpoints and tracking several usage meters.

Pros and cons

Pros: SFTP, FTPS, FTP, browser, SFTP connector, and AS2 capabilities share AWS storage; up to three Availability Zones avoid an additional multi-AZ charge; custom identity providers and infrastructure-as-code support suit governed environments; thousands of concurrent users and 50 GB files cover substantial transfers; regulated-data use cases are supported.
Cons: Billing spans many separate usage categories; workflows cannot be bought without a protocol endpoint; S3 requests and bandwidth remain extra for web apps; larger AS2 messages are charged per 50 MB chunk; maximum file size is 50 GB.

Alternatives

SendSafely is a better starting point for smaller, cross-platform sharing, with a freemium model, a free plan, and a Basic plan at 10.00 USD per month for 250 MB/month. pCloud fits users wanting a consumer-oriented storage service, including a free 10 GB plan and broad desktop and mobile coverage. WeTransfer suits straightforward transfer links, with a free tier capped at 10 transfers or 3 GB in a rolling 30-day window. Wing FTP Server is worth considering when self-hosting is preferred; its free edition allows one domain, 10 user accounts per domain, and 10 connections per domain. SFTPGo targets self-hosted and API-led deployments, with a Tiny plan at 50.00 EUR per month including 25 GiB storage and 250 GiB monthly transfer. Progress MOVEit Transfer is an enterprise transfer option with a free trial and custom commercial terms. Filestack suits developer-facing upload workflows; its free plan includes 1 GB bandwidth, 500 uploads, 1,000 transformations, 1 GB storage, and one workflow. GoAnywhere MFT is another paid managed-file-transfer alternative with trial access and quote-based pricing.

Verdict

AWS Transfer Family is the right choice for AWS-centric organizations that need governed, scalable transfers across protocols, browser users, remote SFTP systems, and AS2 partners. Its main reason to choose it is consolidation around S3 or EFS with strong identity, workflow, and deployment controls. Look elsewhere if your transfers are occasional, your needs are limited to simple sharing, or a multi-dimensional usage bill would outweigh the value of AWS integration.
