Overview

Azahar is a free, open-source Nintendo 3DS emulator for desktop and mobile, best suited to players with a 3DS library and to people working with homebrew. Its combination of playback features and development uses is compelling, but platform support is uneven: the standalone Android app has a minimum OS requirement, and Azahar itself is not planned for iOS in the foreseeable future.

The project continues Citra’s legacy through community development. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo.

Key features

Play, development and preservation

Azahar aims to let owners use their 3DS game libraries with higher resolutions, modern controllers and save states. Those options make it a stronger fit for players seeking flexibility beyond original hardware, while graphics upscaling is also listed as supported. Netplay is supported, though its capabilities are not described, so users who need a particular multiplayer setup should not assume it will meet that need.

The project also serves homebrew developers as a debugging hub and supports research and preservation of the 3DS ecosystem. That wider purpose gives it value beyond gameplay for contributors and researchers. Its open-source license and community development are a natural fit for people interested in examining or contributing to the project.

Compatibility and privacy

A per-game compatibility tracker helps players check reports for individual titles, but the FAQ warns that they may be outdated. Treat them as a starting point rather than assurance that a game will work.

The mobile app privacy policy says the application collects no information during download or use, requires no registration and shares no data with third parties. This is a clear privacy position for Android users, though it applies to the mobile app.

Pricing

Azahar is free and open source. Its Azahar plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is described as a free, open-source 3DS emulator. There is no free trial because the software is already free; no paid tiers or plan limits are given. This makes it an accessible option for players and developers alike, with no subscription decision to weigh.

Platforms

Standalone applications are available for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. The Android minimum is version 10.0 on a 64-bit device, which rules out older systems and unsupported device architectures. Azahar is also distributed through Flathub and the Google Play Store.

Libretro cores support RetroArch and similar frontends, including on iOS and tvOS. That does not mean Azahar has a standalone iOS app: its FAQ says iOS support for Azahar is not planned for the foreseeable future and suggests an iOS build of the original Citra instead. Readers who want a dedicated Azahar app on iPhone or iPad should look elsewhere.

Who it's for

Azahar is a strong candidate for 3DS owners who want to use their libraries on a desktop or compatible Android device, especially if upscaling, save states or modern controllers matter to them. Homebrew developers, researchers and preservation-minded users also have a direct reason to consider it. It is a less suitable choice for iOS users seeking a standalone Azahar app, or anyone who needs current, definitive compatibility assurances for a particular game.

Pros and cons

Pros

Free and open source, so the 3DS emulator has no paid plan barrier.
Combines gameplay features such as upscaling and save states with homebrew debugging, research and preservation aims.
Standalone apps cover Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, with Libretro cores extending frontend support to iOS and tvOS.
The mobile app states it collects no information and requires no registration.

Cons

Standalone Android use requires Android 10.0 or later on a 64-bit device.
Azahar itself has no planned iOS support for the foreseeable future; iOS users are directed to an original Citra build.
Compatibility reports may be outdated, making the tracker an imperfect guide to whether a particular game will run.
Netplay is supported, but its setup and capabilities are not established, which may frustrate users with specific multiplayer needs.

Alternatives

For a different open-source frontend with Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows support, consider RetroArch. It is free and has been an open-source project since 2012, making it a broader frontend choice rather than a direct reason to favor Azahar’s standalone 3DS focus.

For Nintendo DS and DS Lite emulation on Windows, Linux or Mac OS X, DeSmuME is the relevant alternative; it does not support DSi. If your target is a different console generation, bsnes is a free, open-source option for Linux, macOS and Windows, while DuckStation offers a free Android app and desktop support but requires a user-provided BIOS image and legally purchased, dumped games.

For NES, Famicom, Famicom Disk System or Dendy emulation on Windows, Linux or macOS, choose FCEUX. PPSSPP is a free PSP emulator across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows, with a freemium model. Emulicious is free for personal use on Linux, macOS and Windows, while commercial users should seek permission. For Game Boy Advance emulation on Linux, macOS or Windows, mGBA is a free, open-source alternative.

Verdict

Choose Azahar if you want a free, open-source way to use a 3DS library on desktop or a compatible Android device, or need a project aimed at homebrew work and preservation. Its standout strength is that breadth of purpose without a price barrier. Look elsewhere if you need standalone iOS support or dependable, up-to-date compatibility confirmation for a specific game.
