Overview

Backend.AI’s central advantage is sharing physical GPUs through container-level virtualization and fractional allocation. That can help teams make shared accelerator capacity go further instead of reserving a whole GPU for each user. The benefit is greatest when several people or jobs compete for resources; a single-user setup may have little need for its allocation controls and cluster scheduler.

Sokovan handles multi-node, multi-tenant workloads and policy-based resource management. Quota controls and GPU utilization metrics give administrators ways to govern and monitor that shared capacity. This is infrastructure for organizations prepared to plan and operate a deployment: production guidance calls for network-isolated compute nodes with restricted inbound access.

Key features

Accelerator support: The hardware abstraction layer supports more than 12 accelerator types, including products from NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, Rebellions and FuriosaAI. That range is useful for organizations working across different accelerator hardware.
Storage integration: Named backends include VAST, WEKA, Pure Storage and IBM Storage Scale, alongside NVIDIA GPUDirect Storage support. This gives teams with those storage environments a route to connect them to their AI infrastructure.
Browser-based administration: The WebUI covers GPU cluster management, resource monitoring, sessions and policy-based allocation. It provides an administrative interface, rather than changing the platform’s underlying operational responsibilities.
Deployment flexibility: Teams can deploy on-premises, in public cloud environments or in a hybrid setup. AWS, GCP, Azure and OCI are named options for cloud GPU instances.
Air-gapped operation: Installation, model deployment and updates can operate without internet connectivity, which makes the platform relevant to disconnected environments.
Kubernetes and scheduling: Kubernetes support, cloud GPU support and workload scheduling across both cloud and self-hosted environments broaden its infrastructure use cases.

Pricing

Backend.AI uses a freemium model, with a free plan and a trial option. The free entry point is useful for evaluation or home use, while organizations needing enterprise features or managed cloud resources should expect custom pricing.

Open-source: 0.00 USD per free. Intended for home users to install and run on their own hardware. It is the clearest no-cost route, but does not include the enterprise-specific capabilities described for the on-premises plan or Lablup’s cloud resources.
Try-out: 0.00 USD per free, billed Request trial. This is a small cloud service trial available for a limited time, so it is suited to a short evaluation rather than ongoing production use.
Enterprise (on-premises): Custom pricing, billed Request a quote. It includes enterprise-specific features and GPU allocation across multiple organizations and users, making it the relevant option for larger shared deployments.
Enterprise (cloud): Custom pricing, billed Request a quote. Lablup cloud resources, user and group management, and resource allocation are included for teams seeking that cloud service rather than running everything on their own hardware.

Platforms

Backend.AI supports API, Linux, self-hosted and web access. Its on-premises, public-cloud and hybrid deployment choices let organizations place infrastructure according to their operating needs. Air-gapped use is a notable option for disconnected networks, but production deployments should isolate compute nodes and restrict inbound access.

Who it's for

Backend.AI is aimed at a wide range of organizations, from small teams with one GPU to institutions managing clusters of thousands. Its strongest fit is a team that needs to share accelerators, apply resource policies and schedule multi-node workloads. Organizations seeking a simple, low-maintenance end-user app are a weaker fit: this platform is infrastructure that must be deployed and secured.

Pros and cons

Pro — Fractional GPU sharing: Multiple users can share a physical GPU, helping teams allocate hardware without assigning a whole device to each user.
Pro — Broad deployment and accelerator options: On-premises, cloud and hybrid deployment, plus support for more than 12 accelerator types, accommodate varied infrastructure.
Pro — Disconnected operation: Installation, model deployment and updates can work without internet access, useful for air-gapped environments.
Con — Production security is an operational concern: Compute nodes need network isolation and restricted inbound access, adding deployment requirements for administrators.
Con — Enterprise costs require a quote: Both enterprise plans use custom pricing, so organizations cannot determine their cost from the plan terms alone.
Con — The free cloud trial is temporary: The Try-out plan is available only for a limited time, making it an evaluation path rather than a permanent cloud tier.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, browse GPU Cluster Management Software.

dstack is a free alternative with a self-hosted open-source plan; consider it when that orchestration approach is the priority. Its GPU Marketplace charges for GPU usage on a pay-as-you-go basis.
ClearML is another freemium option, and its self-hosted version is 100% open source on GitHub. It may suit readers prioritizing that open-source self-hosted offering.
GPUStack offers a free open-source GPU cluster manager, a direct option for readers seeking that narrower focus.
NVIDIA ShadowPlay is a free Windows option with GeForce hardware and driver requirements; choose it when those platform and hardware constraints match your needs.
Kueue is a free open-source Kubernetes project, an alternative for readers looking for that project rather than a broader infrastructure platform.
OpenPBS has a free open-source edition under AGPL 3.0, with community forum support that carries no guarantees.
HAMi is free, open-source GPU virtualization middleware for AI workloads on Kubernetes, an option for readers focused on that use case.
Apache YuniKorn is a free Apache License 2.0 alternative whose source code must be built before use.

Verdict

Choose Backend.AI if your team needs fractional GPU sharing, policy-based scheduling and deployment flexibility across on-premises, cloud or hybrid infrastructure. The main reason to look elsewhere is operational overhead: production requires network-isolated compute nodes, and enterprise pricing is custom. For a free home setup, the open-source plan is a practical starting point; for production-scale needs, confirm the deployment and pricing fit with Lablup.
