Overview

balenaEtcher is a free, open-source utility for writing operating-system images to USB drives and SD cards. It suits people creating installation media who want a guided process across desktop platforms rather than command-line steps. Its clear scope works well for straightforward flashing, but it is not the choice for persistent live-USB storage or Windows images that need special boot treatment.

Key features

Etcher uses a three-step interface to write bootable ISOs and other OS images to removable drives. That keeps a routine setup task approachable for first-timers; administrators who need fine-grained control over a bootable drive’s configuration may need a different tool.

Etcher confirms when a flash completes, helping users catch a write that could leave a card unbootable or corrupted. It also hides system drives by default and warns about drive selection. Those safeguards reduce the risk of wiping the computer’s main disk, but flashing still erases and replaces all data on the selected target, so checking the drive remains essential.

Websites and blogs can add a “Flash with Etcher” button that lets visitors install an OS from that site. Etcher can also flash Raspberry Pi devices that support USB device boot mode. The project welcomes community contributions; users with problems are directed to raise an issue on GitHub, where the balena.io team can help.

The limits are consequential for some jobs. Etcher cannot configure persistent storage on a live USB, so it is not suited to users who want files or settings to remain between sessions. Windows images may need special boot treatment that Etcher is not designed to provide, making it a poor fit for that task.

Pricing

Etcher is free and is free and open source, with no paid Etcher tier to unlock. That makes it a practical option for occasional personal use as well as routine image flashing, provided its focused feature set meets the need.

The separate balenaCloud plans are for device management rather than Etcher’s image-flashing utility. balenaCloud Free is free, billed $0/year, and includes 10 devices with unlimited team members. Prototype costs 159.00 USD per month, billed $159/month, for 30 devices and 1 user, with additional devices at $3 / additional device / month. Pilot costs 329.00 USD per month, billed $329/month, and includes 60 devices, 3 users, and $2 / additional device / month. Production costs 1439.00 USD per month, billed $1,439/month, and includes 110 devices, 5 users, and $2 / additional device / month. Enterprise has custom pricing and adds 24/7 support, onboarding and training, and dedicated account management to Production. These plans only make sense for readers seeking balenaCloud’s device-management offering, not a more capable Etcher.

Platforms

Etcher has apps for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Its documentation lists Linux on most distributions for Intel 64-bit systems, Windows 10 and later for Intel 64-bit systems, and macOS 10.13 and later on Intel and Apple Silicon. That covers the major desktop platforms, though older Windows versions are outside the stated support range.

Who it's for

Etcher is a good fit for people who need to put an OS image on an SD card or USB drive, including users making installation media and owners of Raspberry Pi devices that support USB device boot mode. Its guided, no-command-line workflow and drive warnings are especially useful when a user wants to keep the process simple without overlooking the risk of erasure. Choose another utility if persistent live-USB storage or special Windows-image boot preparation is central to the job.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free and open source, with a three-step, no-command-line workflow for flashing images to USB drives and SD cards.
Pros: Completion confirmation, hidden system drives, and selection warnings help reduce uncertainty and accidental system-drive selection.
Pros: Supports Raspberry Pi devices with USB device boot mode and offers a “Flash with Etcher” button for participating websites and blogs.
Cons: Flashing erases the whole target drive, so existing data must be backed up or otherwise preserved before use.
Cons: No persistent storage configuration for live USB drives limits its usefulness for portable sessions that retain changes.
Cons: It does not handle the special treatment some Windows images need to boot.

Alternatives

For a broader shortlist, see Bootable USB Software.

YUMI is another free, open-source option for Windows and Linux.
Buddi is a free Linux, macOS, and Windows app, but it is budgeting software rather than a bootable-media alternative.
UNetbootin is a free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows, with donations accepted.
Easy2Boot is a free Windows and Linux option; its menu system uses open-source components and plain-text scripts, while its download also includes the maker’s closed-source Windows utilities.
Universal USB Installer is a free Windows and Linux option; it recommends an 8GB+ USB drive and supports persistence up to 40GB.
Ventoy is a free, open-source bootable USB utility for Linux and Windows.
WinSetupFromUSB is a free Windows-only option.
Boot-Repair is a free, GNU-GPL licensed Linux option.

Verdict

Choose balenaEtcher if you want a free, guided way to flash OS images to USB drives or SD cards, with warnings that help guard against selecting a system drive. Its main trade-offs are that flashing wipes the target, it cannot configure persistent live-USB storage, and it is not designed to prepare Windows images that need special boot treatment. For straightforward installation media, it is a focused choice; for those specific needs, look elsewhere.
