Overview

Bandcamp brings artist-run stores and fan accounts together around music. Artists can customize a storefront and sell digital releases and physical merchandise; fans can follow artists, keep a wishlist, browse a music feed and collect purchases. That focus makes Bandcamp a natural fit for music, not a general-purpose shop for sellers whose main need is a broad ecommerce platform.

Artists pay 15% on digital items and 10% on physical goods. The digital fee falls to 10% after $5,000 in sales if the artist also maintains at least $5,000 in sales over the past 12 months. The lower rate rewards sustained volume, but the standard digital share is a significant cost for artists building an audience.

Key features

Stores and subscriptions

Artists can offer downloads and physical goods, and set monthly or annual subscription prices. Subscription offers may include new releases, catalog items, subscriber-only music or merchandise, and access to a subscriber community. This gives artists ways to sell individual releases or ongoing access, while letting them choose the subscription terms and content.

Listening and fan accounts

Free fan accounts include playlists, a wishlist, artist following, a music feed, a customizable collection page and high-quality downloads of purchases. The free iOS and Android apps let fans stream purchased music, build queues and playlists, and listen offline. Playlists are in beta and require a logged-in fan account; sampling tracks a listener does not own is limited to an artist-set number, three plays by default. That is a practical caveat for listeners who expect unrestricted previews.

Artist tools and integrations

Bandcamp Pro includes Shopify inventory synchronization, which updates stock levels across both platforms, as well as Google Analytics integration. Pro also supports batch uploads, ad-free video hosting and private streams via links. Tracks can be up to 2 GB. These tools are most useful for artists managing a larger catalog or selling through Shopify; artists who do not need them can start with the free Artist account.

The Subsonic API beta lets fans stream and download their collections through third-party clients including Amperfy, Feishin and Submariner. It adds options for listeners who prefer those clients, though its beta status is worth bearing in mind. Bandcamp also publishes a privacy policy describing its handling of personal information and user data. For site questions, it directs artists, labels and fans to its Help Center; general support messages sent to the press email will not receive a response.

Pricing

Bandcamp is freemium, with a free Artist account and paid artist and label plans. Sales fees are separate from subscription prices: artists pay 15% on digital items and 10% on physical goods, with the digital rate dropping to 10% after $5,000 in sales if sales remain at least $5,000 over the previous 12 months.

Plan	Price	What it includes
Bandcamp Artist account	Free	Customizable direct-to-fan store, messaging and automatic fan notifications, listening parties and live streaming.
Pro for Artists	10.00 USD per month	Batch uploads, ad-free video hosting, private streams via links, Shopify inventory integration and uploads up to 2 GB per track.
Label Accounts	20.00 USD per month	Includes Free and Pro features for the label account, a free Bandcamp Pro account for each artist on the label, chart reporting and territory licensing.

The free Artist account suits artists establishing a store without a monthly subscription, though sales fees still apply. Pro for Artists at 10.00 USD per month is a better fit for artists who need its upload, streaming or Shopify tools. Label Accounts at 20.00 USD per month adds label-specific reporting and licensing tools, plus Pro for each artist on the label. That makes it the clearest fit for labels managing multiple artists; an artist selling only through a single store may not need those additions.

Platforms

Bandcamp is available on the web and through iOS and Android apps. It also offers API access, including the Subsonic API beta for compatible third-party music clients.

Who it's for

Bandcamp suits independent artists and labels that want a customizable music store, direct sales and tools for subscriptions or fan communication. It also fits listeners who value following artists, collecting purchases and offline listening in mobile apps. Artists focused on keeping transaction fees low, or sellers seeking a general-purpose ecommerce platform, should compare other options before committing.

Pros and cons

Pro: Artists can sell digital music and physical merchandise through a customizable direct-to-fan store, with subscriptions for recurring offers.
Pro: Free fan accounts combine artist following, wishlists, collections and high-quality downloads, while mobile apps support offline listening to purchases.
Pro: Pro offers Shopify inventory sync, batch uploads and private streams, and label accounts include a Pro account for each artist on the label.
Con: The 15% digital sales fee is substantial for artists who have not reached the threshold for the lower rate; physical goods carry a 10% fee.
Con: Beta playlists require a fan login and restrict unowned-track sampling to an artist-set limit, three plays by default.
Con: Shopify inventory sync and other Pro tools require a paid plan, so artists who need them must add a monthly subscription to sales fees.

Verdict

Choose Bandcamp if you are an independent artist or label seeking a music-focused direct-sales channel, or a fan who wants purchases, collections and artist discovery tied together. Its strongest case is the connection between artist stores and fan listening, reinforced by subscriptions and artist tools. Look elsewhere if minimizing transaction fees is the priority or your store needs extend beyond music-centered selling.
