Overview

The tool parses Bedrock world files and can create an offline, two-dimensional browser map as well as image outputs and reports. Its 256 layers span the Overworld and Nether from bedrock to the build limit, giving builders a way to inspect terrain vertically rather than relying on a single surface view.

Bedrock Viz can change world files, so use a backup copy rather than your only save. If you serve generated maps, keep sensitive files out of the served output. Those precautions make this a better fit for users comfortable managing local files than for anyone seeking a risk-free, hosted viewer.

Key features

Layered map exploration

The browser viewer covers biomes, mobs, items, spawnable blocks, chunk boundaries, elevation shading, and distance measurement. These views help with locating builds, comparing terrain, and examining where particular world features occur. The detail is useful, although browser restrictions can get in the way when the viewer is opened as a local file: block information on hover and elevation overlays may fail in Chrome. Firefox works best for local-file viewing.

Images, reports, and movies

Bedrock Viz can generate images for world layers, biomes, block light, block height, and grass color, alongside world reports. It can also render movies of world layers from bedrock to the build limit, but that workflow requires ffmpeg. The range suits players who want material to inspect or share beyond the interactive map, while movie output adds a dependency to install.

Local deployment and Android backups

Generated maps can be served locally through Docker and NGINX, and the viewer is based on OpenLayers. That gives technically comfortable users a route to view maps through a local web server; it also makes careful control of served files important. For Android world backups, the README describes a DropSync-and-Dropbox workflow, but it has only been lightly tested, so it is not the strongest choice for a critical save-transfer process.

Slime chunks

Slime chunk findings may be unreliable. Treat them as a lead to check in the game, not as a basis for committing substantial building work.

Pricing

Bedrock Viz is free: the Free plan is free and is GPL-2.0 licensed for Minecraft Bedrock Edition worlds. There is no paid tier to unlock, so the trade-off is not a smaller quota or fewer seats; it is the local setup and file-safety responsibility. It suits players who want world inspection without a subscription, provided they are comfortable following the backup precautions.

Platforms

Bedrock Viz supports Linux, macOS, Windows, and web-based viewing, with offline viewing also supported. Windows users can download a Windows 10 zip containing bedrock-viz.exe. macOS 10.15 and later are supported through Homebrew, while Linux users are directed to download the source and compile it. That makes Windows and macOS access more direct; Linux requires more technical effort. For problems during a run, the usage guidance recommends checking the progress window for details.

Who it's for

Choose Bedrock Viz if you play Minecraft Bedrock Edition and want to inspect a save's layers, terrain, or map features locally, or generate images and reports from the world. It is less suitable if you need a hosted, hands-off service, cannot risk changes to your only save, or need slime chunk results to be dependable without in-game confirmation.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad Bedrock coverage: the viewer spans 256 Overworld and Nether layers and includes several terrain and world-feature views.
Useful output choices: map viewing, reports, images, and optional movies cover more than a single map-rendering workflow.
Free and offline-capable: players can inspect worlds locally without paying for a plan or depending on a hosted viewer.

Cons

Save-file risk: the tool can change world files, so a backup is essential before use.
Local browser limits: some viewer details may not work when opened from a local file, particularly in Chrome.
Uncertain slime chunk results: findings need confirmation in-game before they guide substantial work.
Setup is uneven: Linux users must compile from source, and movie generation requires ffmpeg.

Alternatives

BedrockMap is worth considering if you want a free web option with a stated render allowance: its free plan permits one world upload, a 1500x1500 block render area, two renders per day, three zoom levels, and public sharing links. Pick Bedrock Viz instead when its offline viewing and 256-layer Bedrock maps matter more than those web-render limits.

Mapcrafter is another free choice for Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows, but it requires Anvil world format and Minecraft 1.6 resource packs. Bedrock Viz is the more relevant fit for Bedrock Edition saves.

The Explorer's Friend is a free, MIT-licensed server-side Minecraft map mod or plugin; consider it if that server-side approach suits your setup better.

BlueMap is a free alternative for Java Edition worlds, with Java 25+ required for server plugin or mod use and Java 21+ for its standalone CLI documentation. Choose Bedrock Viz for Bedrock saves instead.

Chunkmap is a free option with a web and Windows presence; its CLI is open source under an MIT license. mcview is another free option for iOS, macOS, and Windows. Tectonicus is free for Linux, macOS, and Windows. squaremap is a free Minecraft server plugin or mod for supported platforms, with web and self-hosted availability.

For a broader comparison, browse Minecraft World Map Viewers or Hex Editors.

Verdict

Bedrock Viz is a strong free choice for Bedrock players who want deep, offline layer exploration plus image and report generation. Its breadth is the reason to choose it; the possibility of save-file changes, browser restrictions, and uncertain slime chunk findings are reasons to look elsewhere if you need a more foolproof workflow.
