Overview

BestInterest brings together communication, scheduling, expense tracking, and documentation for parents raising children across two households. It is especially suited to a parent dealing with tense exchanges who wants practical tools even if the other parent will not join. Its free tier is unusually broad, but message safeguards, larger call allowances, and verified reports require a paid plan.

Key features

Communication and coaching

Message Shield filters harmful language before a message reaches its recipient, while keeping the original available; Tone Guardian suggests a calmer rewrite while a message is still a draft. Both are included in Protect and Protect Plus, so parents who need those safeguards must move beyond Free or Connect. Coaching is available on every tier: three sessions a day on Free, six on Connect, and unlimited on Protect and Protect Plus. That gives occasional users a way to try coaching without a subscription, while frequent users have a clear upgrade path.

In-app audio and video calls add a direct conversation option, but outgoing minutes are capped on the lower paid tiers. Connect allows 45 minutes a month, with a 15-minute limit per call; Protect raises that to 200 minutes a month and 60 minutes per call. Protect Plus removes the outgoing-minute cap and adds voicemail, recording, and transcription for supported calls. The top tier is the relevant choice for parents who rely on longer calls or need those call records.

Coordination and records

A shared custody calendar, schedule changes, tasks, and expense tracking with receipts put day-to-day coordination in the same app as communication. Free includes these tools, as well as a private journal and data exports, making it a substantive starting point rather than a short-lived trial. CSV exports support record keeping; Connect and higher plans add structured PDF Verified Reports. Connect caps these at 10 a month, while Protect and Protect Plus include unlimited reports. A report is not a guarantee of court admissibility: that depends on the facts and jurisdiction.

Solo Mode lets one parent use coaching, organization, and documentation without the other parent joining. Journal entries, Coach conversations, and unsent drafts stay private from the co-parent; sent or deliberately shared content is visible. That distinction makes the app workable for individual preparation as well as shared coordination.

Privacy and support

BestInterest describes administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards but does not guarantee absolute security. Its privacy policy says it uses Google Analytics and Firebase Analytics; mobile users can disable usage-data collection in Privacy Options. The policy also identifies Apple App Store, Google Play, or Stripe as possible payment processors and describes Google and Meta advertising measurement services. Support includes FAQs, help articles, contact support, troubleshooting, and service status.

Pricing

Free is free, with no expiration. It includes secure messaging, Solo Mode, three coaching sessions a day, inbound calls, the shared calendar, tasks, expense tracking, a private journal, and data exports. It is a strong fit for parents who can work within those coaching limits and do not need Message Shield, Tone Guardian, outgoing call minutes, or verified reports.

Connect costs 9.99 USD per month or $99.99/year, with a 2-week free trial. It raises coaching to six sessions a day, includes 45 outgoing call minutes monthly with a 15-minute per-call cap, and allows up to 10 verified reports a month. Boundary Line and uploads are also included. Choose it for modest calling and a limited volume of structured reports; it does not include the message filtering and draft-rewriting tools reserved for Protect and above.

Protect costs 14.99 USD per month or $149.99/year, with a 2-week free trial. It adds Message Shield, Tone Guardian, Smart Silence, Emergency Detection, unlimited coaching, 200 outgoing call minutes a month with a 60-minute per-call cap, and unlimited verified reports. It suits parents who need the core message safeguards or regularly produce reports, but the call allowance still has a ceiling.

Protect Plus costs 29.99 USD per month or $299.99/year, with a 2-week free trial. It includes unlimited outgoing calling, voicemail, and recording and transcription for supported calls, alongside unlimited verified reports. It is best reserved for parents who need those call features or enough calling to outgrow Protect's limits. The free tier has no expiration; each paid tier has a two-week trial, and the annual billing options reduce the total compared with paying monthly for a full year.

Platforms

BestInterest is available on Android, iOS, and the web, so parents can use it across mobile and browser-based workflows.

Who it's for

BestInterest is a good fit for separated parents who want scheduling, expenses, and records alongside communication support, particularly when exchanges are difficult or only one parent is willing to adopt an app. Parents who need basic coordination can start free. Those who require filtered incoming messages, draft coaching, extensive verified reporting, or recorded calls should compare the paid tiers against their actual usage. It is less compelling for anyone seeking only a shared calendar or who does not need its communication and documentation tools.

Pros and cons

Broad no-expiration free tier: calendar, tasks, expense tracking, journal, exports, Solo Mode, and daily coaching are included without a subscription.
Tools address different points in a difficult exchange: Tone Guardian works before sending, while Message Shield filters harmful language before the recipient reads it and preserves the original.
Solo use does not depend on co-parent buy-in: one parent can still use coaching, organization, and documentation.
Paid limits are material: Connect and Protect cap outgoing call minutes and per-call length, and Connect limits monthly verified reports to 10.
Key communication safeguards are not in Connect: parents need Protect or Protect Plus for Message Shield and Tone Guardian.
Security is not absolute: the policy disclaims a guarantee, and analytics and advertising measurement services are part of the described data practices.

Alternatives

Co-Parenting Apps is the broader directory for comparing options across the category. Consider AppClose if you want to compare a paid app that also has a free plan and a fee-waiver account for financial hardship and domestic-violence survivors. CoreParent is worth considering if its iOS, macOS, and web availability or its attorney-and-mediator partner option better fits your workflow. Peaceful CoParenting Messenger may suit parents focused on messaging, attachments, timestamps, and a bad-words filter, with subscriptions tied to communication limits and PDF reports.

Custody X Change is an option to compare if you need its wider platform coverage, including Windows, and can work with a limited free version rather than a free trial. Truece may be a better fit for a lower monthly price or a lifetime basic tier, particularly if its storage, photo, and annual report limits suit your needs. Family Focus is another mobile option to compare if its $7.99 monthly Premium plan and cancel-anytime term suit you. Beacon Co-Parenting App may appeal if you want an everyday co-parenting plan free for both parents with no subscription. Choose 2houses instead if a paid whole-family account with one parent subscribing is a better match.

Verdict

BestInterest is the strongest fit for a co-parent who wants practical coordination and documentation plus tools aimed at reducing friction, especially if the other parent may not participate. Its no-expiration Free plan makes it easy to begin, while Protect is the tier to choose for message filtering, draft coaching, and unlimited verified reports. Look elsewhere if your priority is a lower-cost paid plan, a specific alternative workflow, or you need stronger security assurances than the policy makes.
