Overview

Better Stack covers AI SRE, incident management, on-call, uptime monitoring, status pages, telemetry, error tracking, and real user monitoring. Bringing these functions together can connect alerts with investigation and response, though teams should compare the individual quotas and plans rather than assume one subscription covers every need.

Better Stack says it is SOC 2 Type 2 and GDPR compliant. Relevant data is encrypted at rest with AES-256 and in transit with HTTPS/TLS; it also uses regular automated backups and redundant storage where appropriate. EU data is stored by default in GDPR-compliant DIN ISO/IEC 27001-certified data centers, while custom data locations are available to enterprise accounts. It is currently not HIPAA compliant, so it is not a fit for workloads that require HIPAA compliance.

Key features

Incident response and investigation

On-call scheduling, escalation policies, post-incident reviews, stakeholder updates, and ChatOps incident actions support a fuller response process than alert delivery alone. The Slack-native AI SRE agent investigates incidents using logs, metrics, traces, errors, and web events. That combination is most relevant to teams already working in Slack that want investigation context close to incident coordination.

Monitoring and telemetry

Uptime checks cover HTTP(S) keywords, TCP/UDP ports, SSL, and DNS, and can run as often as every 30 seconds. That range suits teams monitoring both websites and network services. Logs and traces can be transformed with VRL and queried using drag-and-drop, PromQL, or SQL, giving teams several ways to work with telemetry data.

Error tracking supports Sentry SDKs and includes 100,000 exceptions with 90-day retention. The free plan's telemetry allowance is less generous on retention: 3 GB of logs and traces are kept for three days. Teams that need longer log retention should budget for a paid logs-and-traces plan.

Integrations and security

Listed integrations include Slack, Microsoft Teams, Datadog, New Relic, Grafana, Prometheus, PagerDuty, Jira, Zapier, and Google Calendar. iOS and Android apps support mobile notifications, useful for responders who need alerts away from a desk.

Pricing

The free plan is free. It includes 10 monitors and heartbeats, one status page, 100,000 exceptions per month, 5,000 session replays, 3 GB of logs and traces retained for three days, and 30 GB of metrics. The pricing page also includes 1,000 status-page subscribers. This is a substantial starting allowance for personal projects, but the brief telemetry retention and monitor cap make it less suited to teams with sustained production needs.

Responder costs $29.00 USD per month, billed per license annually. It includes uptime monitoring, incident management, on-call, status pages, and unlimited phone call and SMS alerts. The per-license annual term matters for teams estimating responder costs; this plan is focused on response and does not state a telemetry quota.

Logs-and-traces plans are billed monthly: Nano is $30.00 USD per month for 40 GB each of traces, logs, and metrics; Micro is $120.00 USD per month for 160 GB each; Mega is $250.00 USD per month for 340 GB each; and Tera is $500.00 USD per month for 700 GB each. Each includes 30-day logs retention. These tiers scale capacity, but teams should match the allowance to their ingestion needs rather than treat the Responder price as the full cost of the platform.

Platforms

Better Stack is available on Android, iOS, and the web, and offers an API. Mobile apps are specifically useful for receiving notifications; the API provides another integration surface for teams.

Who it's for

Better Stack is a strong candidate for engineering and IT teams that want uptime monitoring connected to incident coordination, and for teams that need telemetry, error tracking, and responder workflows under one platform. It is less suitable when a short free retention window is inadequate, when teams want one simple plan spanning all telemetry and response needs, or when HIPAA compliance is required.

Pros and cons

Pros

Connected response workflow: On-call, escalations, post-incident reviews, stakeholder updates, and ChatOps actions cover several stages of incident handling.
Broad monitoring coverage: HTTP(S), TCP/UDP, SSL, and DNS checks, with intervals as frequent as 30 seconds, address varied monitoring needs.
Flexible telemetry queries: VRL transformation and drag-and-drop, PromQL, or SQL queries give teams multiple ways to work with logs and traces.
Useful starting allowance: The free tier combines monitoring, status pages, exceptions, session replays, logs and traces, and metrics without a charge.

Cons

Short free telemetry retention: Logs and traces are retained for only three days on the free plan, limiting its usefulness for longer investigations.
Separate paid costs: Responder is priced per license annually, while logs-and-traces capacity has its own monthly tiers; teams needing both must account for both.
No HIPAA compliance: Organizations that require HIPAA compliance cannot use it for that requirement.

Alternatives

For a narrower monitoring need, Site24x7 Website Monitoring has a free plan for up to 50 resources with instant downtime email alerts, plus a Web Uptime plan at $9.00 USD per month. Checkly offers a free Hobby plan with 10 uptime monitors, 1,000 browser/Playwright check runs, and 10,000 API check runs; consider it when those check types and allowances fit your needs.

HetrixTools is an alternative with a free plan. Dotcom-Monitor offers a free plan with up to 25 targets and monitoring as frequently as every five minutes. F5 BIG-IP APM is a paid alternative with a perpetual-license option and a free trial.

UptimeRobot has a free plan with 50 monitors and five-minute intervals, making it worth considering for hobby and nonprofit projects. WebSitePulse offers paid monitoring plans, including HTTP performance at $9.00 USD per month with a 10-minute interval and one monitoring location. Uptime Kuma is a free, MIT-licensed self-hosted option for teams prepared to manage their own deployment.

Verdict

Choose Better Stack if your team wants uptime monitoring tied to on-call response and telemetry, and its separate responder and data allowances fit your budget. Its connected incident workflow is the strongest reason to consider it; the short free retention, separate paid telemetry tiers, and lack of HIPAA compliance are clear reasons to look elsewhere.
