Overview

A single OpenAI-compatible API connects Bifrost to more than 20 AI providers, reducing the need to manage separate gateway integrations for each one. It also supports MCP tools as both a client and server, connecting to external tool servers and exposing tools to clients such as Claude Desktop. That makes it relevant to teams coordinating tool use alongside model calls, not just those standardizing provider access.

Weighted load balancing, retries, automatic failover, and semantic caching address reliability and repeated requests. Virtual keys let teams assign permissions, budgets, rate limits, and routing by consumer. Those controls are valuable when several applications or teams share AI infrastructure, but Bifrost is an operational layer to manage—not a hosted model catalog for individual users.

Key features

Provider access and routing: The unified API covers 20+ providers, while weighted balancing, retries, and failover give operators ways to manage traffic when providers have problems. Semantic caching can avoid repeating work for semantically similar requests.
Consumer-level governance: Virtual keys support separate permissions, budgets, rate limits, and routing for each consumer. This provides a practical control point for shared deployments, though the more advanced enterprise controls sit in the Enterprise edition.
MCP integration: Bifrost can connect to external MCP servers and serve tools to clients such as Claude Desktop. This extends the gateway's role beyond LLM calls to tool workflows.
SDK and operations support: Documented integrations cover OpenAI, Anthropic, Google GenAI, LiteLLM, and LangChain SDKs. Built-in request monitoring, Prometheus metrics, and OpenTelemetry tracing integrations give operators visibility into traffic.
Security and enterprise controls: Security practices include dependency and code scanning, Docker image scanning, and hardened non-root production containers. Enterprise adds SSO, role-based access control, audit logs, guardrails, vault integrations, and private VPC deployments.

Pricing

Bifrost uses a freemium model. The OSS plan costs 0.00 USD per free, is free forever, and supports self-hosting with NPX, Docker, Kubernetes, or a Go binary under Apache 2.0. It suits developers and small teams comfortable operating their own deployment. Documentation, community, and self-management support are included, so teams needing an SLA or direct engineering help should not treat the free edition as a substitute for paid support.

Enterprise has custom pricing for production deployments and includes a 14-day free trial on an enterprise license. It is aimed at teams running AI systems at scale, particularly those needing SSO, role-based access, audit logs, guardrails, vault integrations, private VPC deployment, and SLA-backed support with direct access to engineers. The trial is short, and the plan's price depends on custom terms.

Platforms

Bifrost supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows environments. It can run as an HTTP API gateway using NPX or Docker; Kubernetes and Go binary are also supported self-hosting options. This flexibility favors teams that can manage infrastructure, rather than buyers looking only for a hosted service.

Who it's for

Bifrost is a strong fit for developers and small teams who want an open-source, self-managed gateway to consolidate provider access and apply controls to shared AI traffic. Larger teams operating production systems have a clearer case for Enterprise when its access controls, deployment options, and support matter. It is less suitable for users who want a managed model catalog or do not want to operate gateway infrastructure.

Pros and cons

Pro: One OpenAI-compatible API reaches 20+ providers, helping teams centralize integrations rather than maintain a separate gateway path for each provider.
Pro: Failover, retries, weighted balancing, and semantic caching give operators several ways to manage reliability and repeated requests.
Pro: Virtual keys make consumer-level budgets, permissions, rate limits, and routing possible in shared deployments.
Con: OSS is self-hosted and self-managed, so teams must take responsibility for deployment and ongoing operation.
Con: SSO, role-based access control, audit logs, guardrails, vault integrations, and private VPC deployments require Enterprise, which has custom pricing.
Con: OSS support is documentation and community rather than SLA-backed direct engineering support.

Alternatives

See LLM Gateway Software for more options in the category.

Kong Gateway is worth considering if a 30-day trial with no Gateway limits and 30 days of analytics retention is a better fit.
Requesty may suit teams that prefer a web-accessible option with a free tier capped at 200 requests per day, including routing, caching, fallbacks, spend tracking, analytics, and EU data residency.
TrueFoundry AI Gateway is a fit to compare when the Developer tier's limits of 3 users, 10k requests per user per month, 5 model accounts, and 5 MCP servers match the team's needs.
Helicone is an alternative for teams prioritizing a proudly open-source product and community contributions.
LiteLLM offers a self-hosted open-source plan with 100+ providers, virtual keys, spend tracking, budgets, and rate limits, making it relevant when provider breadth is the priority.
Vercel is a broader web and API platform to consider if its free Hobby plan's CDN, data transfer, and function quotas for personal, non-commercial use fit better.
YoloRouter is another self-hosted option, with a free single binary, SQLite out of the box, and optional PostgreSQL.
LangSmith may fit teams focused on tracing, with its Developer plan offering up to 5k base traces per month, one seat, and community support before pay-as-you-go charges.

Verdict

Choose Bifrost if you want to self-host a central gateway for model and MCP traffic, with provider routing and per-consumer controls in one system. Its free, Apache 2.0 OSS edition makes that operational foundation accessible to developers and small teams. Look elsewhere if you need managed hosting, or budget for Enterprise if production access controls and SLA-backed support are essential.
